The next year brought special grief - the best friend of Hieromonk Barnabas, Bishop Benjamin, accepted martyrdom from the Bolsheviks. Barnabas himself was preparing for close reprisal. The time was such that every minute it was necessary to expect an arrest. But the man of God always maintained an imperturbable calmness. He repeated that everything is given to mankind according to its sins, and one cannot grumble at the will of God.

At the turn of 1926-1927. he accepted the great schema and at the age of sixty became Seraphim in honor of Seraphim of Sarov. From that time on, he became more and more known among the Orthodox people as a good adviser and comforter. Lay people, priests, and monks came to him for spiritual nourishment. There were times when he confessed people for a whole day, or even more. Among the spiritual sons of Elder Seraphim was the one who tonsured him a monk - Archimandrite Nikolai (Yarushevich), who was destined to become in 1941 the Metropolitan of Kyiv and Galicia. Seraphim also became the confessor of Archbishop Alexy (Simansky) of Khutyn, the future Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy I.

“Try to keep yourself from the snares that are placed outside and inside a person and covered in every possible way with a semblance of truth. They are easily recognized by the fact that they deprive the soul of a peaceful dispensation. Where there is no peace, there are the machinations of the enemy of salvation. From Christ come truth and holy humility. The peace of Christ is the witness of the truth.”

This is how Elder Seraphim taught his spiritual followers: “No matter how much we run from God, we won’t go anywhere anyway! Let us beseech the Lord to keep us faithful to the Holy Orthodox Church.”

Since the end of the 20s. the gift of healing began to manifest itself in the elder Seraphim. Cases were passed from mouth to mouth when he, having anointed the patient with lamp oil, cured him of ailments. Once a woman was brought to the priest, who could not enter the temple in any way - she began to shake so much that she could not even raise her hand for the sign of the cross. Father Seraphim said: "Let's pray together," he led the possessed woman to the icons, put her on her knees, and stood next to her himself. After praying, he anointed her forehead with oil from the lamp. The unfortunate woman began to writhe, her cries began to resemble the barking of a dog. The elder covered her with a stole and read prayers for a long time until the patient calmed down. From that time on, the possession ended, the healed woman completely forgot about her recent possession.

Many other cases of healing through the prayers of the elder are known. And every time he demanded that they thank not him, but Seraphim of Sarov, for with his help these miracles are performed.

One of the most famous prophecies of Elder Seraphim is dedicated to Russia: “Now the time has come for repentance and confession.

The Lord Himself determined the punishment for the Russian people for sins, and until the Lord Himself has mercy on Russia, it is pointless to go against His holy will. A gloomy night will cover the Russian land for a long time, much suffering and sorrow awaits us ahead.

That is why the Lord teaches us: “By your patience save your souls” (Luke 21:19). We can only trust in God and beg His forgiveness.”

A thunderstorm will pass over the Russian land,
The Lord will forgive the Russian people their sins.
And the holy cross of divine beauty
On the temples of God it will again shine brightly.

And the ringing of bells throughout our Holy Rus'
From sinful sleep to salvation will awaken,
The holy cloisters will be opened again,
And faith in God will unite everyone.

He wrote these poems in 1939.

Having reached the age of 64, Elder Seraphim began to get sick - intercostal neuralgia, rheumatism, blockage of the veins in the legs, congestion in the lungs and heart failure. Doctors advised me to change my place of residence, they recommended moving to Vyritsa, a climatic resort. Metropolitan Seraphim (Chichagov), who in the world had the profession of a doctor, got acquainted with the conclusion of the medical commission and immediately blessed the move. The humble confessor of the Lavra could only accept this as an obedience. Together with him, in 1930, his ex-wife, and now schema-nun Seraphim, and granddaughter Margarita, who became a novice of the Voskresensky Novodevichy Convent, went to Vyritsa.

From the time of the move, Elder Seraphim stopped going to doctors, perceiving his ailments as a necessary test, and yet he experienced severe suffering from blockage of the veins - his legs hurt and sometimes were taken away. But he said: “Illness is a school of humility, where you truly know your weakness ...” One involuntarily recalls “Selected passages from correspondence with friends” by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, his article on diseases: “Oh! How we need illnesses!.. Not to mention the fact that health itself, which constantly pushes a Russian person to some kind of leaps and a desire to show off his qualities in front of others, would make me do a thousand stupid things ... If there weren’t such painful suffering, where I wouldn't get carried away now! What a significant person he imagines himself to be!.. Accept every ailment humbly, believing in advance that it is needed. Pray to God only that its wondrous meaning and all the depth of its lofty meaning will be revealed to you.”

One of the constant teachings of Elder Seraphim was that there is no need to ask God for anything other than the fulfillment of the will of the Most High, for the Lord himself knows what to send down to us.

Archbishop Nikolai (Yarushevich) of Peterhof was a regular visitor to Vyritsa. By the beginning of the 40s. he headed the Ukrainian Church, became the archbishop of Volyn and Lutsk, and then the metropolitan of Kyiv and Galicia. It is hard to imagine, but in 1941 only four metropolitans remained - Patriarchal Locum Tenens, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna Sergiy (Stragorodsky), Metropolitan of Leningrad and Novgorod Alexy (Simansky), Metropolitan of Kyiv and Galicia Nikolay (Yarushevich) and Metropolitan of Vilna and Lithuania Sergiy (Voskresensky ), and the latter, after the occupation of Riga by the Germans, ended up in the occupied territory.

Be that as it may, Bishop Nicholas considered Stalin a great leader, capable of leading the country to victory over fascism. In 1944, he wrote: “In our leader, believers, together with the whole country, know the greatest of the people that our country gave birth to, who combined in his person all the qualities of our Russian heroes and great commanders of the past mentioned above; they see the embodiment of all the best and brightest that constitutes the sacred spiritual heritage of the Russian people, bequeathed by their ancestors: it inextricably combined into a single image fiery love for the Motherland and the people, the deepest wisdom, the strength of a courageous, unshakable spirit and a fatherly heart. As in a military leader, brilliant military skills merged in him with the strongest will to win ... The name of Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, surrounded by the greatest love of all the peoples of our country, is the banner of glory, prosperity, greatness of our Motherland. It is likely that Vladyka Nikolai instilled this confidence in Elder Seraphim. And during the war, being in occupation, the Vyritsky elder did not stop encouraging people with assurances that the enemy would be defeated and victory would be ours.

It is customary to be surprised that in his entire life Seraphim Vyritsky was never repressed, was not subjected to arrests, beatings, did not end up in camps. But in the first year of the war, Elder Seraphim suffered great grief - the Bolsheviks killed his son! And this is worse than any repression! For a loving parent, there is nothing more terrible than the death of his children.

Nikolai Vasilyevich Muravyov was born in 1895. Being a student of the law faculty of St. Petersburg University, in 1914, as a true patriot, he volunteered for the war, served in an aviation company, and was shell-shocked. The hardest blow for his father was that Nikolai deliberately converted from Orthodoxy to Catholicism. As a result, his life was somehow absurd - he tried to go to Yudenich, failed, began to serve in the Red Army. Married, daughter Margarita was born, but the marriage broke up. I wanted to run abroad, but fell in love with a pop artist. As a result, he stayed in Russia and remarried. Then daughter Olga was born, but this marriage soon broke up. Nikolai was arrested on a fabricated case, and the artist's wife left with her daughter Olga for another artist. After his release, Nikolai married for the third time, his son Alexander was born. His wife and son settled in Vyritsa not far from the house where Father Seraphim lived with Mother Seraphim and Nikolai's first daughter, Margarita ... And Nikolai got himself a fourth wife, with whom he lived illegally; she bore him a son, named in Catholic Ermingeld. It is surprising that, being the son of such a beacon of Orthodoxy, Nikolai Vasilyevich remained a staunch Catholic! In January 1941, when he decided to visit his legitimate family, Nikolai was arrested. And relatives did not know anything about his future fate. And he was shot in Yekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk) on September 4, 1941. A man who could again defend his Fatherland. After all, he was only 46 years old.

The family of Nicholas remained to live in Vyritsa under the elder Seraphim. His granddaughter Margarita, a strong-willed and courageous girl, became his real assistant. She has repeatedly blocked the road to uninvited guests, unwanted visitors. Once she told the Chekists: “I won’t let her in!”, And they did not dare to use force against her. But Margarita immediately distinguished those who really needed the support of her grandfather.

Everyone who came to Vyritsa was surprised by the peculiar manner in which Elder Seraphim communicated with people. He loved to kiss, hug, stroke a person, touch him with his forehead, that is, he behaved the way we usually behave with children, especially when they need to be consoled.

Others brought donations to him, which he then transferred either to the Pyukhtitsky Monastery or to the Kazan Church of Vyritsa.

“Yes, how will I look before the Lord if I leave the money to myself! he said. - If you have a ruble in your wallet, give it to the poor, leaving a penny for yourself, and you will never have money transferred. Let's not regret, then God will reward you! You will regret and grumble - you will lose the last ... "

The memories of people have left us evidence of the great asceticism that Elder Seraphim Vyritsky placed upon himself. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, he ate nothing at all, on other days he drank tea with bread or ate one potato and a little grated carrot, and sometimes he was content with only prosphora and water. The priests of the Kazan Church came daily to commune him. .

Among the visitors to Vyritsa there were many world-famous scientists. Contrary to Soviet propaganda, which presented, for example, Academician Pavlov as a complete atheist, Ivan Petrovich remained a deeply religious person until the end of his days. He was terribly worried about the destruction of temples and tried to fight against this in a somewhat naive way, which seemed to him ingenious: Pavlov assured the Bolsheviks that after some time scientists would prove that there was no God, and then it would be possible to destroy temples. He hoped thereby to win time, and there, you see, times will change. So, Ivan Petrovich was a constant guest of Seraphim, including coming to Vyritsa.

Other luminaries of science also came to him - academician of astronomy Sergei Pavlovich Glazenap, professor of pharmacology Mikhail Ivanovich Gramenitsky, homeopathic professor Sergei Serapionovich Favorsky, academician Vladimir Aleksandrovich Fok, known for his works in the field of quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity, academician of biology Leon Abgarovich Orbeli.

There were other visitors as well. The Chekists came to Vyritsa several times, and once with the clear intention of arresting the elder. But Seraphim “tamed” them in his own way - he affectionately addressed the chief Chekist by name, and he, struck by the light of the elder’s eyes, abandoned his intention to make an arrest.

Until the end of his days, Elder Seraphim did not stop performing miracles of healing. Through his prayers, people were healed even from blindness and mental insanity. He healed, as we have already noted, the demoniac.

In the autumn of 1941, the Germans occupied Vyritsa. From that time on, the elder began to pray with even greater zeal for the salvation of Russia, standing idle for many hours on a stone, like Seraphim of Sarov. According to the recollections of the grandchildren, “in the garden, behind the house, about fifty meters away, a granite boulder protruded from the ground, in front of which a small apple tree grew. It was on this stone that Fr. Seraphim. He was led by the arms to the place of prayer, and sometimes they were simply carried. An icon was strengthened on the apple tree, and grandfather stood on a stone with his sore knees and stretched out his hands to the sky ... What did it cost him! Apparently, the Lord Himself helped him, but it was impossible to look at all this without tears. We repeatedly begged him to leave this feat - after all, it was possible to pray in the cell, but in this case he was merciless both to himself and to us.

Romanian soldiers were stationed in Vyritsa, subordinate to German officers. One day the Germans came to talk to Father Seraphim. When he was a merchant, he had a lot of dealings with the Germans and Austrians, he was fluent in German and willingly agreed to talk.

And just as in the Time of Troubles, the Monk Irinarch of Rostov predicted the imminent death of the Poles who came to him, so Elder Seraphim boldly declared to the German captain, who asked if he would soon march along Palace Square: “This will never happen.”

Moreover, he predicted the death of the captain himself, saying that, hastily retreating under the onslaught of the Russian army, he would lay down his head near Warsaw. In 1980, a Romanian officer who served under this captain will come to Vyritsa to bow to the grave of the elder Seraphim and tell that the elder's prediction has completely come true.

As soon as Vyritsa was liberated from the Nazis, Metropolitan Alexy (Simansky) came to visit Elder Seraphim, and he predicted his imminent patriarchate. And so it happened: on February 2, 1945, he became the new Patriarch, Alexy I.

In the same victorious year of 1945, her faithful wife, schema-nun Seraphim (Olga Ivanovna Muravyova), died. The elder bequeathed to bury himself next to her. It was an amazing Christian marriage, similar to the marriage of the holy righteous Peter and Fevronia. They loved each other, gave birth to children, then took a monastic vow and stayed together as brother and sister until the end of their lives ...

In recent years, the elder almost did not get out of bed, so much illness overcame him. On April 3, 1949, with the words “Save, Lord, and have mercy on the whole world,” he passed into eternal life, leaving a temporary earthly vale. During the funeral, one of the four pupils of theological schools who were honored to stand at the tomb of the great elder was Alexei Ridiger - the future Patriarch Alexy II. And half a century later, during his Patriarchate, in 2000, Elder Seraphim Vyritsky was canonized as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church.

Among the prophecies of the elder Seraphim there are also about future times, which seem to be already coming:

Terrible year 1917… It is pleasing to the Lord to send Russia severe trials… Already at this time, many wealthy people from among the nobility, intelligentsia and merchants transferred their capital abroad and left Russia, hoping to survive troubled times abroad.

At this time, the famous St. Petersburg merchant Vasily Nikolaevich Muravyov (that was the name of the Reverend Seraphim Vyritsky in the world), engaged in the fur trade, commits an act inexplicable for the ordinary human mind - he closes his business, gives generous benefits to all his employees, and donates fixed capital to the needs of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the Resurrection Novodevichy Convent in St. Petersburg, the Iversky Vyksa Convent in the Nizhny Novgorod province, founded by his spiritual father, Hieromanakh Barnabas, the Elder of the Gethsemane Skete of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, and other monasteries.

It would seem that nothing prevented Vasily Nikolaevich from investing his capital in some profitable business abroad and, safely leaving Russia, settling with his family somewhere in the west, following the example of many people he knew. All this would promise a calm and serene life.

However, for Vasily Nikolaevich Muravyov, there was no such choice - he was always ready to share any trials with his beloved Fatherland and his people, especially since the Lord had prepared for him a special appointment ...

The Lord Himself points to the free will of the human soul: “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and distribute to the poor; and you will have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me” (Matthew 19:21). “If you want…” – these are the words of the Savior, to which the faithful servant of God Basil has repeatedly answered in his heart: “I want, Lord!” .

The highest courage and unshakable faith demanded at that time the act that he performs. Having rejected all the charms of this world, by mutual agreement with his wife, he makes an irrevocable decision to devote himself entirely to serving the One God - a prayerful feat. The fulfillment of his cherished aspiration to accept monasticism, which he carried in himself all his previous life, is nearing...

And at the same time, his faithful wife and associate Olga Ivanovna Muravieva was tonsured a monk in the Voskresensky Novodevichy Convent in Petrograd, and she was given the name Christina (in the schema of Seraphim).

In 1920, having taken monastic vows at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, then Elder Hieroschemamonk Seraphim became her confessor. From 1930, with the onset of a serious illness, and until his death in 1949, he lived in Vyritsa.

The time of the senile service of the Vyritsk ascetic fell on the period of bloody theomachism, the Great Patriotic War, post-war devastation and revival.

With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the elder intensified the feat of prayer on the stone - he began to perform it daily. By that time, the illness had weakened him greatly and he could hardly move without outside help. He was led by the arms to the place of prayer, and sometimes they simply carried him, relatives recall. Prayed about. Seraphim for as long as he had the strength - sometimes an hour, sometimes two, and sometimes several hours in a row. He gave himself entirely, without a trace - it was truly a cry to God!

We believe that through the prayers of such ascetics Russia withstood and Petersburg was saved. Despite the cold and heat, wind and rain, the elder insistently demanded to help him get to the stone; despite many serious illnesses, he continued his incomprehensible 1000-day feat. So, day after day, during all the long exhausting war years, the elder Seraphim Vyritsky offered up his prayers for the salvation of the Fatherland.

And all these years, Father Seraphim testified about Christ with his very life, making an immeasurable contribution to the preservation of Orthodoxy as the foundation of the foundations of the existence of the Russian people, leading to the salvation of an innumerable number of souls.

For love for people, the Lord granted the Vyritsa ascetic great spiritual wisdom, the word of healing weak souls, the word of true providence and prophecy. Both during his lifetime and after his dormition, the priest helped and continues to help everyone who turns to him.

The Elder Hieroschemamonk Seraphim passed away to Eternity On April 3, 1949, the Heavenly City - Jerusalem on high - opened its gates to the new celestial being, accepting him forever into his Divine chambers.

“The East will be baptized in Russia. The whole heavenly world is praying for the enlightenment of the East. The time will come when Russia will be torn apart. The West will contribute in every possible way to the destruction of Russia and will give up its eastern part to China before the time comes. The Far East will be taken over by the Japanese, and Siberia by the Chinese, who will move to Russia, marry Russians, and in the end, by cunning and deceit, will take the territory of Siberia to the Urals. When China wants to go further, the West will resist and will not allow it.

Many countries will take up arms against Russia, but she will stand, losing most of their land. This war, about which the Holy Scriptures narrate and the prophets speak, will become reason for the unification of mankind . People will understand that it is impossible to live like this, otherwise all living things will die - this will be the threshold of the accession of the Antichrist. Then the persecution of Christians will come, when trains leave the cities for Russia, we must hurry to be among the first, since many of those who remain will die. The kingdom of lies and evil is coming. It will be so hard, so bad, so scary that God forbid we live to see that time. We won't live with you."

Shortly after the end of the Great Patriotic War, Father Seraphim was told:

- Dear father! How good it is now - the war is over, the church bells are ringing...

The old man answered this:

- No, that's not all. There will be more fear than before. You will still meet her (war) ... Who will only survive? Who will remain alive? But whoever remains alive - what a good life he will have ...

If people all over the world, every single person, at the same time would kneel and pray to God for at least five minutes to prolong life, so that the Lord would give everyone time to repent. If the Russian people do not come to repentance, it may happen that brother will rise again against brother.

The true Church will always be persecuted, and it will be possible to be saved only by sorrows and illnesses. Persecution will take the most sophisticated, unpredictable character. It will be terrible to live up to these times.”

The old man loved the youth very much. At that time, young people hardly went to church, and he was so happy when they came to him. The elder spoke about the enormous role of the young in the future revival of the Church. He said that the times will come (and are already coming!) when the corruption and decadence of the morals of the young will reach their last limits. Almost no one will remain uncorrupted. They will consider that everything is permitted to them to satisfy whims and lusts, because they will see their impunity. They will gather in companies and gangs, steal, debauchery.

But the time will come when the voice of God will come, when the youth will understand that it is impossible to live like this any longer, and they will go to faith in different ways, the craving for asceticism will increase. Those who were previously sinners, drunkards, will fill the temples, will feel a great thirst for spiritual life. Many of them will become monks, monasteries will open, churches will be full of believers. Then the young will go on a pilgrimage to holy places - it will be a glorious time! The fact that they sin now, they will repent so fervently. Just as a candle, before it goes out, flares up brightly, illuminating everything with its last light, so does the life of the Church. And that time is near.

“How much the Lord gave grace to Russia - what forests, lakes, rivers, rich bowels of the earth. But we live without God, and the earth is a mother, she gives us bread and life. Our enemies and the God-fighting authorities will not allow people to return to the earth for a long time. It is possible to feed everyone and arrange everything, but it is not profitable for the enemies - they are afraid of Russia revived. And yet Russia will live from her land.”

“Salvation of the world –from Russia, and St. Petersburg will become the spiritual center of the country . There will also be great events in Russia - the discovery and glorification of the relics in St. Petersburg - a great joy for the whole world. Vyritsa will be a place of pilgrimage, and a monastery will be opened here.”

After the war, the elder said to his spiritual daughter:

“The time will come when the procession from the Kazan Cathedral to the Lavra will again go. You will wait." It was hard to believe it, but now everything has come true. All Orthodox people remember the procession to the Lavra with the newly acquired relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov.

“Jerusalem will be the capital of Israel, and in time it should become the capital of the world. For this is the true center of the Earth, where the Savior of the world was crucified and resurrected.”

Father Seraphim spoke to his relatives about his future glorification, but at the same time he added: “Do not rush to dig up my body. Leave everything to the Lord... I don't want my body to be traded" .

Once a spiritual son asked Elder Hieromonk Seraphim Vyritsky (Vasily Nikolaevich Muravyov in the world) a question about the future of Russia. “There will come a time,” he answered, “when there will be an extraordinary flowering in Russia. Many churches and monasteries will open, even foreigners will come to us to be baptized. But this is not for long, for 15 years, then the Antichrist will come.” In 1920, the elder Nektary of Optinsky said: “Russia will rise and be materially poor, but rich in spirit, and in Optina there will be 7 more lamps, 7 pillars.”

In 1930, Archbishop Theophan of Poltava summed up the prophecies he received from the elders, who were able to see the future: “You ask me about the near future and about the coming end times. I do not speak about this from myself, but what was revealed to me by the elders. The coming of the Antichrist is approaching and is already very close. The time that separates us from its coming can be measured in years, at most in decades. But before his arrival, Russia must be reborn, albeit for a short time. And the King will be there, chosen by the Lord Himself. And he will be a man of ardent faith, deep mind and iron will. This is what was revealed to us about him. And we will wait for the fulfillment of this revelation. Judging by many signs, it is coming; except that because of our sins, the Lord will cancel it and change His promise. According to the testimony of the word of God, this too can happen.” Other holy fathers also saw our time and the future, and tried to warn those close to them. So the elder of the Glinsk Hermitage, Hieromonk Porfiry, writes: “Over time, faith in Russia will fall, the brilliance of earthly glory will blind the mind, the words of truth will be reviled, but for faith, unknown people will rise from the people and restore the trampled down.” So, we see that all the prophecies of these God-inspired people at the beginning of our century speak of the expectation of the restoration of Holy Rus' and even the Orthodox Tsar shortly before the coming of the Antichrist and the end of the world. But this event will have the character of an unusually miraculous rather than an ordinary historical event. And at the same time, it will depend to some extent on the Russian people themselves, since God is acting here through the free will of man. Just as after the repentance of the people, Nineveh was pardoned, and the prophecy of Jonah about her death turned out to be false, so the prophecies about the restoration of Russia may turn out to be false if the Russian people do not repent. One of the most significant prophecies about the future of Russia before the revolution was known only to a few. It was so bold that church censorship did not allow it to be printed. It was found among the manuscripts of Motovilov, known for his famous "Conversation with St. Seraphim on the acquisition of the Holy Spirit." This prophecy, which has now appeared in print (in recent decades), concerns the future resurrection of St. Seraphim just before the end of the world.

That's what Rev. Seraphim said to Motovilov:

“Repeatedly,” writes Motovilov, “I heard from the lips of the great saint of God, the elder Fr. Seraphim, that he will not lie with his flesh in Sarov. And so, one day I dared to ask him:

- You, Father, deign to say that you will not lie in Sarov with your flesh. So, something, will the Sarovites give you up?

“I, Your Godliness, a wretched Seraphim, from the Lord God are supposed to live much more than a hundred years. But since by that time the hierarchs have become so ungodly that their wickedness will surpass the Greek hierarchs during the time of Theodosius the Younger, so that they will no longer believe in the most important dogma of the faith of Christ, it is pleasing to the Lord God to take me, the wretched Seraphim, until the time from this temporary life and therefore resurrect, and my resurrection will be, like the resurrection of the seven youths in the cave of Okhlonskaya in the days of Theodosius the Youngest. Having revealed this great terrible secret, the great elder told me that after his resurrection, he would go from Sarov to Diveevo and there he would open the sermon of universal repentance. For that sermon, moreover, for the miracle of the resurrection, a great multitude will gather to the people from all ends of the earth; Diveevo will become Lavra, Bertyanovo - a city, and Arzamas - a province. And preaching repentance in Diveyevo, Father Seraphim will open four relics in it and, upon opening them, he himself will lie between them. And then the end of everything will soon come.”

In one of his other conversations with Motovilov, the Monk Seraphim, speaking about the spiritual state of the last Christians who remained faithful to God before the end of the world, told something very important for strengthening the confessors of Christ: no flesh, if, for the sake of the elect, these days had not been shortened — in those days, the remnant of the faithful will experience something similar to what was once experienced by the Lord Himself, when He, hanging on the cross, being perfect God and perfect man, felt Himself by His Divinity so forsaken that he cried out to Him: My God! My God! Why did you leave me? The last Christians must also experience a similar abandonment of mankind by the Grace of God, but only for the shortest time, after which the Lord will not hesitate to appear after him in all His glory, and all the holy angels with Him. And then everything predetermined from the ages in the eternal Council will be accomplished in its entirety.

The belief that Holy Rus' is still alive is also confirmed by a number of testimonies from some observers of modern Russia. Here is what Gennady Shimanov says:

“Holy Rus' has not disappeared, not buried; it is eternal and victorious, and this last word belongs to the history of our people ... Holy Rus' has disappeared only from the surface of modern life, but it continues to live in its hidden depths, growing until the time when God wills, and surviving the winter, it again will appear on the surface and decorate the image of the Russian land, which was whipped by fierce and icy hurricanes and storms.

The word that Russia will bring to the world In the New Testament, in the book of revelation of John the Theologian, the events before the end of the world are described in detail: “And when He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven, as it were for half an hour” (Rev. 8, 1). Some explain this passage of Holy Scripture as a short period of peace preceding the last events of world history, namely, a short period of the restoration of Russia, when the world word about repentance will begin with Russia - and this is the “last and final word”, which, according to Dostoevsky , Russia will bring the world.

In modern conditions, under which events in any country become instantly known to the whole world, Russia, cleansed by the blood of martyrs, will indeed have the opportunity to awaken the world from the deep sleep of atheism and unbelief. Father Dimitry Dudko and others have repeatedly said that it is impossible for the blood of countless Russian martyrs to be shed in vain; it will surely be the seed of the last and bright flowering of true Christianity.

However, it is very easy to just dream about the future of this world and what might happen in Russia. The resurrection of Russia depends on the efforts of each individual soul; it cannot happen without the participation of Orthodox people - our common repentance and our feat. It draws into its sphere not only people in Russia itself, but also all those who exist in the Diaspora and all Orthodox people throughout the world.

Bishop John of Shanghai, in his report to the Council of Bishops Abroad in 1938, spoke of the apocalyptic mission of the Russian people abroad: “By punishing, the Lord at the same time shows the Russian people the path to salvation, making them a preacher of Orthodoxy throughout the universe. The Russian diaspora has introduced Orthodoxy to all parts of the world, for the Russian refugee mass (largely unconsciously) is a preacher of Orthodoxy. It has been given to Russians abroad to shine with the light of Orthodoxy throughout the universe, so that other peoples, seeing their good deeds, glorify our Father, who is in heaven, and thereby earn their salvation ... Abroad must turn to the path of repentance and, having begged for forgiveness, reborn spiritually, to become capable of reviving our suffering Motherland.” Thus, Russians abroad, behaving as befits true Orthodox Christians, will prepare the way for St. Seraphim to preach universal repentance.

To some extent, this is happening, if we pay attention to the fact that in parallel with the Orthodox revival in Russia, there is a genuine awakening of Orthodoxy not only in America, but also in other countries outside of Russia. But the whole future depends on us: if we are reborn to a true Orthodox life, then Holy Rus' will be restored; if not, then the Lord can withdraw his promises. Archbishop John ended his report at the Council with a prophecy and the hope that the true Pascha would come there, which would shine on the whole world before the end of everything that exists and before the beginning of the universal Kingdom of God: “Shake off the sleep of despondency and laziness, sons of Russia! Behold the glory of her suffering and be cleansed, washed from your sins! Strengthen yourself in the Orthodox faith in order to be worthy to dwell in the habitation of the Lord and to dwell in the holy mountain. Rise, rise, rise, Rus', you who drank the cup of His wrath from the hand of the Lord! When your suffering is over, your righteousness will go with you, and the glory of the Lord will accompany you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the radiance that rises above you. Then lift up your eyes around you and see: behold, your children will come to you from the west, and the north, and the sea, and the east, blessing Christ in you forever! Human efforts cannot destroy or change the fate of God. Russia is destined for great importance. It will prevail over the universe. She will achieve this when her population will correspond to the space ... The attack of envious enemies will force her to develop strength and understand her position, which will already constantly arouse envy and intrigues. This will require enormous labor, feat, self-sacrifice; but what to do when the hand of an incomprehensible Destiny leads to them! In the 38th and 39th chapters of the prophet Ezekiel, the power, the large number of the northern people, called Ross, are described; this people must achieve an enormous material development before the end of the world and conclude with its end the history of wandering on earth of the human race ... "

There will be a storm. And the Russian ship will be broken. But after all, even on chips and debris, people are saved. A great miracle of God will be revealed. And all the chips and fragments, by the will of God and His power, will gather and unite and the ship will be recreated in its beauty and will go its own way, intended by God. So this will be a miracle that is obvious to everyone (Reverend Anatoly Optinsky).

Terrible adversities will subside, Russia will defeat its enemies, And the name of the Russian Great People will thunder like thunder throughout the universe! Rev. Seraphim Vyritsky
