"An adventure in seven tales" called Hans H. Andersen his great fairy-tale mystery "The Snow Queen". The brilliant intuition of the great storyteller allowed him to see the hidden symbolism of the path followed by the faithful Gerda. Actually, these "seven adventures" can be considered to a certain extent a fabulous "horoscope" of Gerda's journey, because the seven stages of Initiation can be connected at the level of a comprehensive analogy with the seven starry skies of the planets. And there are many striking correspondences to this in the fairy tale. It all starts with a crooked mirror of the evil Troll. And just in this we see the beginning of Initiation: visible world there is only an "illusion", since the uninitiated sees him not as he really is, but as he only seems to him. To a certain extent, this can be compared with the doctrine of the "Secret Book of the Albigensians" about the creation of the world by the Devil. The very etymology of the word "devil" indicates duality, separation. And a single, integral soul - Kai and Gerda - turns out to be divided. Great importance and at the beginning of the tale, and at its end, it is given the image of roses - the wonderful flowers of the Mysteries. The rose is, in essence, a symbol of completeness, completeness and perfection, expressing the idea of a mystical center, paradise, a point of unity and quintessence. But when the soul is divided, it goes on a great Path for its new acquisition. First, the myst must go through the four elements and defeat their material origin. And it is the “elements” that tell Gerda that Kai is alive: sunlight (fire), birds (air), river (water) - she gives her her shoes, in which she walked the earth. 1. First, Gerda gets to an old woman who knows how to conjure. The moon is the patroness of magic and sorcery, and also, which is very remarkable, the mistress of plants. And the flowers in the old woman's flower garden tell Gerda seven tales. Seven is a number associated with the Moon since ancient times. At the same time, the old woman first catches Gerda from the river, along which she, sleeping, floats in a boat. Gerda - a pure soul, a doctrine that translates into new world. Actually, the river is a symbol that separates the ordinary world from the subtle, other-real, that which is on the other side of the world flow of phenomena, the flow of life. It is no coincidence that in the rites of passage and when traveling from one state to another, movement is usually thought of as a crossing from one's native bank to another across the river of life or death. It is also remarkable that in a number of traditions the great rivers were considered to flow "from the moon". So, for example, the Nile, according to Ptolemy's "Geography", follows from the "Mountains of the Moon" in Central Africa. "Crowned by the Moon" was the name of the great Shiva. Shiva's forehead was adorned with the image of a crescent moon, and his hair was a symbolic image of the Ganges; according to some legends, the sources of the sacred Ganges are on the moon. 2. Gerda meets a raven and a crow. The black color of these birds corresponds to the "black" color of the planet Mercury, which was indeed given to this planet in a number of traditions. It tells the story of the marriage of a princess who decided to take as her husband such a person who can carry on a conversation. Hermes-Mercury is the lord and patron of the Word, speech. Dreams that Gerda meets are also connected with Hermes, for sleep is a “mini-death”, namely in realm of the dead Hermes enters, sending the soul of every person there. 3. The prince and princess themselves, as it were, symbolize Venus, the goddess of love. 4. Gerda, like a queen, in a golden carriage (the Sun) sets off. But at a certain stage, the mist must lose everything that previously seemed important and valuable to him. 5. Gerda gets to the robbers (Mars) and loses everything that she had before. Among the most difficult trials in a number of the Mysteries was the "meeting with your shadow", which is the opposite of Gerda - the little robber. But if the myst is sufficiently prepared and is not afraid of the dark corners of his soul and psyche, then they will become his allies and faithful helpers; the energy of destruction will turn to creation.

The next morning the ship entered the harbor of the magnificent capital of the neighboring state. And now bells rang in the city, trumpets blew from high towers, and regiments of soldiers with shining bayonets and flying banners lined up in the squares. The festivities began, the ball followed the ball, but the princess was not yet in the capital - she was brought up somewhere in a distant monastery, where she was sent to learn all the royal virtues. Finally she arrived.

The little mermaid looked at her eagerly and had to confess that she had never seen a more beautiful and sweeter face. The skin of the princess was tender, transparent, and dark blue kind eyes smiled from under long black eyelashes.

- It's you! the prince exclaimed. “It was you who saved my life when I lay half-dead on the seashore!”

And he tightly pressed his blushing bride to his heart.

- How happy I am! he said to the little mermaid. “Things I never dared to dream of have come true!” You will rejoice at my happiness - because no one loves me like you do!

The little mermaid kissed his hand, and it seemed to her that her heart was already breaking, and the prince's wedding was supposed to kill her and turn her into sea foam!

Church bells rang, heralds rode through the streets, announcing the princess's engagement to the people. Fragrant oil burned in precious silver lamps on all the altars. The priests burned incense. The bride and groom shook hands with each other and received the blessing of the bishop. The little mermaid stood dressed in silk and gold, holding the bride's train in her hands, but her ears did not hear the sounds of festive music, her eyes did not see how the wedding ceremony was performed - she thought about her death hour and about what she was losing with her life.

The newlyweds were to sail for the prince's homeland that same evening. Cannons fired, flags fluttered, on the deck of the ship was a luxurious tent of gold and purple, all covered with soft cushions. Here, in the tent, the newlyweds were supposed to spend this cool, quiet night. But then the wind blew the sails, the ship easily glided over the waves and rushed forward across the bright sea.

As soon as it got dark, a lot of multi-colored lanterns were lit on the ship, and the sailors started dancing on the deck. The little mermaid remembered how she first surfaced on the surface of the sea and saw the same splendor and fun. And then she fluttered and rushed in a quick aerial dance, like a swallow pursued by an enemy. Everyone expressed their admiration for her: she had never danced so wonderfully! Her tender legs were cut like knives, but she did not feel this pain, because her heart was even more painful: she knew that for the last time she saw this man, for whom she left her relatives and her father's house, gave her lovely voice and daily suffered unbearable torment which he had no idea. Last night she breathed the same air with him, saw the blue sea and starry sky, knowing that the eternal night will soon come for her, without thoughts, without dreams. The little mermaid did not have a soul, and it was not possible to find it. Far after midnight there was fun on the ship and music sounded, and the little mermaid laughed and danced with the thought of death in her heart. The prince at that time kissed his beautiful wife, and she played with his black curls. Hand in hand they retired to rest in their magnificent tent.

Silence reigned on the ship, only the helmsman was awake at the helm. The little mermaid leaned her white hands on the side and, turning her face to the east, began to wait for the first ray of the sun, which, as she knew, was to kill her. And suddenly she saw her sisters rise from the sea; they were pale, like her, but their long beautiful hair no longer fluttered in the wind - they were cut.

“We gave our hair to a witch to help us save you from death. And she gave us this knife - do you see how sharp it is? Before the sun rises, you must plunge it into the heart of the prince, and when his warm blood splashes on your feet, they will grow together into a fishtail, and you will again become a mermaid, plunge into your native sea and turn into salty sea foam no sooner than you live his three hundred years. But hurry! Either he or you - one of you must die before sunrise! Our old grandmother is so sad that she lost all her gray hair in her grief, and our hair is cut off with the witch's scissors. Kill the prince and return to us! Hurry! You see, a scarlet streak appeared in the sky. Soon the sun will rise and you will die!

And they took a deep, deep breath and plunged into the sea.

Raising the purple floor of the tent, the little mermaid saw that the head of the lovely newlywed was resting on the chest of the prince. The little mermaid leaned over, kissed him on his beautiful forehead, and looked up at the sky: the morning dawn flared up there. Then she looked at the sharp knife and again fixed her eyes on the prince, and at that time he uttered the name of his young wife in a dream: it means that she was the only one in his thoughts! And the knife trembled in the hands of the little mermaid. But another moment passed, and she threw the knife into the waves, which turned red where it fell. Once again she looked at the prince with a half-faded look, rushed from the ship into the sea and felt her body melt into foam.

The sun rose over the sea. Its rays lovingly warmed the deadly cold sea foam, and the little mermaid did not feel that she was dying. She saw the clear sun and some transparent, magical creatures hovering above her in multitudes; through them she saw the white sails of the ship and the scarlet clouds in the sky. The voice of the ghosts sounded like music, but the music was so sublime that people could not hear it, just as they could not see these careless creatures. They had no wings, but they floated in the air, weightless and transparent. And now the little mermaid felt that she herself was becoming like them and more and more separated from the sea foam.

- Where am I going? she asked, rising into the air; and her voice sounded so wondrous and soulful that earthly music could not convey these sounds.

“To the daughters of the air!” the air creatures answered her. “A mermaid does not have an immortal soul, and she can only find one if a person loves her. Her eternal existence depends on someone else's will. The daughters of the air also do not have an immortal soul, but they themselves can earn one for themselves. good deeds. We fly to hot countries where people die from sultry, plague-stricken air, and bring coolness. We spread the fragrance of flowers in the air and bring joy and healing to people. For three hundred years we have been doing good to the best of our ability, and then we are rewarded immortal soul and taste the eternal bliss available to man. You, poor little mermaid, with all your heart aspired to the same thing, you loved and suffered - rise with us to the transcendental world. Now you yourself can earn an immortal soul with good deeds and you will gain it in three hundred years!

And the little mermaid stretched out her transparent hands to the sun, and for the first time tears appeared in her eyes.

At that time, everything on the ship began to move again, and the little mermaid saw how the newlyweds were looking for her. They looked sadly at the surging sea foam, as if they knew that the little mermaid had thrown herself into the waves. Invisibly, the little mermaid kissed the newlywed on the forehead, smiled at the prince and, together with the other daughters of the air, rose to the pink clouds floating in the sky.

“Three hundred years from now, we will ascend to God’s kingdom in the same way!”

“Maybe even earlier!” whispered one of the daughters of the air. “Invisibly we fly into the dwellings of people where there are children, and if we find there a kind, obedient child who pleases his parents and is worthy of their love, then we smile, and the period of our test is reduced. The child does not see us when we fly into the room, and if we rejoice at him and smile, a year is subtracted from our three hundred years. If we meet an evil, disobedient child, we weep bitterly, and each tear adds an extra day to the long period of our trial.

The Snow Queen

(Adventures in seven tales)

The first story

which talks about the mirror and its fragments

Let's start! Here we reach the end of our fairy tale, then we will know more than now.

Many, many years ago, there lived a man named Ji-zin-mei. He had seven sheep, whom he loved very much, fed them plenty of sweet grass, grazed in beautiful meadows. And they, in turn, paid him the same. Ji-zin-mei never ran out of milk and wool in the house. In all the years of the simple life of a poor shepherd, he never had such sheep. And not one of the seven sheep in their entire short life had a master like Ji-zin-mei. He was very pleased with them, and they with him.
One day a crow flew into Ji-zin-mei's dwelling. She was about to drink milk from the scullery when Ji-zin-mei entered. Not expecting this at all and having lost its head with fear, the crow darted under the canopy in search of a way out. Having hit its belly on a pillar supporting the canopy, it died. Ji-zin-mei rolled with laughter. He laughed and laughed and couldn't stop. He laughed until he too, exhausted himself, died.
The sad sheep decided to take the body of Ji-zin-mei to Lhasa and laying it at the feet of Tszhovo Rinpoche, asking for blessings. Thus, they wanted to pay the last tribute to their kind master. So they set off on a long journey, taking turns carrying the body of Ji-zin-mei. On the way they met a wolf. He asked the sheep:
“And where are you heading all alone, without a master?” And what is your burden? You are all so fat. It's time for me to eat you.
“We are carrying the body of our deceased master to Lhasa,” the sheep bleated plaintively, begging for mercy. - Please don't eat us now. You can eat us on the way back. Then each of us will have a lamb and you will get even more food than now.
After numerous requests, the wolf finally agreed to spare them for a while - on the condition that when they went back, he would be waiting for them in the same place. So, the hearts of the sheep were still full of sadness because of the death of the owner, and then, after many years of peace and prosperity, a new misfortune fell on them, and now they had to accept death from a wolf deaf to someone else's misfortune.
Upon reaching Lhasa, they laid the body of their master at the feet of Jowo Rinpoche. They also made offerings in the name of Ji-zin-mei and prayed for his soon return to the human world.
It took long months for the journey and rituals, and during this time each of them managed to give birth to a lamb. Having completed the work begun, the sheep set off on their way back. When they approached the place where the wolf was supposed to be waiting for them, the older sheep began to sob, and the younger ones, being in blissful ignorance and unaware of their bitter fate, continued to play. Suddenly, a hare ran out to meet the sheep and asked what was the reason for their sadness. When they told him about the wolf and what awaited them, the hare said:
- If so, I can help, but only if you take turns taking me.
The sheep agreed, and the hare rode on the back of one sheep, then another. Along the way, they came across a chara. The hare said that it would be useful to them, and made one of the sheep take the chara * with him. Then they found the canvas, and again the hare ordered to grab it, saying that they would need it too. And finally, they saw a sheet of paper and took it too. When they reached the agreed place, the hare ordered the sheep to stop and commanded loudly:
- Install the Round Earring Seat!
The sheep put a bowl on the ground.
- Spread a mat for His Excellency! - the hare commanded again, and the sheep laid the canvas on the bowl.
The hare sat down on the prepared seat and ordered:
- And now bring His Excellency a scroll with a decree!
The sheep handed him a sheet of paper.
Pretending to read, the hare proclaimed loudly:
“According to the decree of the Ruler of the entire Black-haired Tibetan Empire, whoever attacks fourteen sheep who have performed pious deeds in Lhasa and are returning home must know that he will be beheaded.
The wolf, lurking nearby in the bushes, heard this frightening sentence and immediately took off running. On the way he met a migro* and asked where he was running in such fear. The wolf told him everything.
- Don't be afraid, - Migro said, - this is one of the tricks of the hare. Many have already suffered from them. Let's go back and fight him face to face.
Even with such powerful support, the wolf did not want to go back and meet again with the hare, who had a direct order from the Emperor to execute anyone who tried to encroach on the lives of fourteen sheep. In the end, they tied themselves with one rope and went to the hare. When the hare saw a wolf and a migro walking towards him together, he asked the wolf:
“And this is the same fat dri * that you promised to bring instead of yourself?” - and hit Migro on the head with a stick. Migro immediately doubted the veracity of the story he heard from the wolf and rushed back, dragging the wolf tied to him with a rope. By the time the migro reached his cave and came to his senses, the wolf had already expired.
So the wolf came to an end. The sheep thanked the hare and peacefully returned to their village. And again in their lives, as before, bright days came, except that there was no loving owner next to them.

Notes:

Charu is a dense, hard bedding, usually made from yak wool.
Migro is a wild beast that looks like a gorilla.
Dree is a cross between a yak and a cow. Out of habit, one can not distinguish from each other yak, zo and dri.
