The meaning of the signs of the zodiac in astrology. Symbols of the Zodiac Signs: what they mean and what power they have. What do the zodiac signs Aries, Taurus, Gemini mean?

Each Zodiac sign in the horoscope has its own sign. But few people think about what it means and what meaning it carries. It turns out that the very symbol of the Sign of the Zodiac contains the essence of the creation of the world and all that exists. According to the Signs of the Zodiac, you can trace the history of the creation of our world.

Aries

The symbol of this Zodiac Sign resembles horns. But in the esoteric sense, this sign means an explosion that rewards matter. Since the constellation Aries is the first in the horoscope, it is associated with the beginning of beginnings, with the emergence of the world and all living things. An explosion is the original meaning of this Zodiac Sign. By the way, this interpretation corresponds to the explosive nature of Aries.

Taurus

In the horoscope, Taurus is represented as a sign that creates and accumulates material wealth. This is what its symbolism says. At first glance, it may seem like a bull's head - a circle and horns. In the original meaning, the circle means the Earth, the horns - the Moon. Together, all this is the creation of matter and space.

Twins

The symbol of the Zodiac Sign Gemini is two lines that connect or separate two arcs. The esoteric meaning of this symbol is two moons looking at each other, two sides: material and spiritual, two different worlds. This, by the way, is reflected in the character of Gemini.

Cancer

The sign of Cancer is two circles. In the esoteric sense, this symbol means the female breast or egg, which corresponds to the feminine nature of this constellation. This is reflected in the nature of this Zodiac Sign - the desire for family values, offspring and home.

a lion

The symbol of the Zodiac Sign Leo is similar, at first glance, to a creature with a mane. But in fact, if you look closely, this is an image of a sperm cell, which speaks of the masculine principle and the masculine nature of this Zodiac Sign.

Virgo

Virgo is associated with the sixth day of the creation of the world, when man appeared on earth and began to explore space. This Sign of the Zodiac is similar to the symbol of the scorpion, but only the tail in this case is directed inward, as if Virgo absorbs energy into herself. This is the essence and task of Virgo - to structure the surrounding space.

Scales

In the traditional sense, the symbol of this Zodiac Sign means Libra. But initially it is the sunset. Libra is opposite the sign Aries in the zodiac circle. And if Aries symbolizes the dawn, the beginning of all beginnings, then Libra, as it were, sums up everything and balances everything.

Scorpion

The symbol of Scorpio is an arrow pointing outward. This symbol is similar to the Virgo symbol, but if the Virgo absorbs all the energy, then Scorpio, on the contrary, gives it away.

Sagittarius

In the history of the origin of the world, Sagittarius is both a savior and a mentor. The arrow is the symbol of this zodiac sign. The Sign of the Zodiac itself is represented as a centaur shooting from a bow. In the esoteric sense, Sagittarius is the one who burns all the karmic sins of a person and in return gives laws and directs the world in the direction of further development.

Capricorn

This is the most incomprehensible, at first glance, symbol. In its original meaning, Capricorn was a mixture of a fish and a goat, which meant the perfection of matter. It is at this stage of development that humanity can show its character.

Aquarius

Two waves are the symbol of this Zodiac Sign. Aquarius was depicted as a man who pours water from a jug on a fish. This is a symbol of the introduction of reason into humanity. It is not for nothing that Aquarius is considered the most intelligent sign of the zodiac.

Fish

The symbol of the Sign of the Fish means death in the esoteric sense. The two semicircles that represent movement are crossed out. This is the end of the life cycle and the transition to another world.

The zodiac passes through 13 constellations, but the zodiac circle is divided into 12 equal parts, unlike the constellations. Each part is one Sign of the Zodiac, the name of which is given depending on the location of the corresponding zodiac constellation in this area of the sky.

All the planets move according to the signs of the Zodiac. A full circle of the signs of the Zodiac gives us 1 YEAR. The earth is in the center.

The main property is activity. Common features of the signs of the cardinal cross: action, activity, perseverance, desire, desire and ability to influence the environment; hence the desire for change. Energy is directed from the center to the outside.

Negative traits: selfishness, dissatisfaction, irritability. These properties are dictated by an excess of energy. These people love a fight, a duel. They always go towards the struggle, it ignites them and gives them pleasure. Victory can be caused by movement, military action, a challenge to a duel. But the result does not always lead to victory. There are other factors involved as well.

People born under cardinal signs are active, energetic and prone to change; gas, after all, also generates energy and easily spreads in all directions, almost unconstrained by gravity. People of cardinal signs pave the way for others to follow and start things that others complete. Born Aries bravely embark on daring ventures and adventures. Cancer natives are breaking new ground in housing and nutrition. Libras become innovators in the fields of literature, arts and social activities, while Capricorns become pioneers in business and industry. Signs of cardinal quality give birth to INNOVATORS.

Fixed cross.

The basis of this cross is constancy. The main quality is courage. Common Features: People of this cross excel in defense. The product of their efforts in the form of a positive result is endurance, patience, waiting. This man is a fortress. They suffer not from weak will and cowardice, but from masculinity. They are characterized by constancy, steadfastness, but also steadfastness in the event of an attack. They can give a brilliant rebuff (depending on the sign). They have a great capacity for work, reliability, unbending will. Realization of energy depending on the efforts in any area.

Negative features: self-confidence, conservatism, stubbornness, excessive pride, which is expressed in self-will and self-will. Also inertia, not love for change, dominance, authoritarianism, despotism.

Under the signs of a fixed quality, rather adamant, determined and persistent people are born. Solid bodies are difficult to change shape or location; in the same way, people of a fixed quality are deeply attached to the familiar environment, the habitual manner of performing professional duties and the habitual way of thinking. They have great strength to resist any external pressure, they are hardy and patient, they are distinguished by perseverance and perseverance, they delve into details. They are not innovators and not energetic developers, but when development reaches a climax, they refine the details and improve. Fixed quality marks produce IMPROVERS.

Movable cross.

It includes signs: | | |

The main quality is variability. Common features: mobility, complaisance, flexibility, diplomacy, courtesy, sociability, talkativeness. These signs are endowed with flexibility of perception. This is a very valuable quality that gives them the ability to quickly adapt to change. They have the ability to find innovative solutions. These signs do not need a duel. They are strong in originality, resourcefulness, negotiations, because they are mobile and dual.

Negative traits: talkativeness, narcissism, selfishness, conceit. Basically, there is a desire to talk only about yourself. The duality of these signs is based on a combination of fixedness and cardinality, which results in the constancy of movement.

Mutable signs are the golden mean between the crazy activity of cardinal signs and the stubborn resistance of fixed ones. A liquid cannot flow through a gap as easily as a gas, but if the channel is continued for it, it will quickly flow along the line of least resistance. People born under mutable signs are rarely pioneers and innovators, but easily follow in their footsteps. Just as a liquid easily takes on the shape of the container it is in, so mutable people easily adapt to new surroundings and strangers. Signs of mutable quality rarely produce pioneers and innovators. Mostly DEVELOPERS.

In it you can find key characteristics, attributes, unique properties of planets, elements and houses in astrology. Depending on your preferences, whether it is the oldest culture of the wise East, or the latest trend from the West, you can choose an up-to-date horoscope or pick up a precious stone-talisman. Chinese Zodiac

The Eastern horoscope, consisting of 12 talismans, is very popular in the world. It determines human destinies, reflects their character, preferences and compatibility. Asian sages endowed the Chinese zodiac signs with unique characteristics and animal habits. They believed that a person can learn to control his Destiny only by knowing his exclusivity, talents and strengths of his patrons. The eastern horoscope over the years will help build relationships with people, teach the art of eliminating negative emotions and attracting positive.

Meaning of the Signs of the Zodiac

European astrologers count 12 zodiac signs that have a karmic basis. An analysis of the location of celestial bodies on a star map at the time of a person’s birth allows you to determine his temperament, outlook on life, unique abilities and congenital defects. An inextricable connection with a certain sign of the Zodiac leaves an imprint on the future fate of the individual, predetermines the course of development of love relationships and predicts the most successful compatibility with a partner. Having studied the characteristics of the Western space constellations, you can not only direct your personal life in the right direction, but also avoid possible mistakes.

    Planets in Astrology

Each zodiac sign has its own patron planet, along with them there are also celestial belts, guarded by two astronomical objects at once. Traditionally, 10 cosmic bodies are distinguished in astrology, reflecting the properties of signs and their unique features, as well as a number of asteroids representing their type of energy. The planets located in the personal horoscope associated with the moment of birth of a person reflect the features and characteristics of the individual, his character and uniqueness of temperament. Outside the natal chart, astronomical objects are a collection of accumulated knowledge and behavioral characteristics that are characteristic of all people of the same era.

    Elements in Astrology

Philosophical treatises of the Chinese sages single out 5 elements - primary elements, while Western astrologers single out only 4 natural elements. They are united by one goal - to help a person determine his belonging, understand himself and find spiritual harmony. Each sign of the Zodiac has a dual nature: Yin (determines introversion, intuitiveness and passive character traits) and Yang (responsible for extroversion and the dominance of logic). Opposite signs of two opposites are able to improve the compatibility of partners, unipolar ones, on the contrary, worsen.

    Houses in Astrology

Astrological houses or houses of a horoscope in astrology are sectors of the ecliptic, generally unequal to each other, characterizing in the horoscope various spheres of life and manifestations of the person or object for which the horoscope is drawn up. There are many domification systems, that is, ways of dividing the ecliptic into houses, which is one of the issues that cause ongoing discussions between astrologers of various astrological schools.

The meaning of the signs of the zodiac is influenced not only by the date of birth and the elements, but also by houses, planets and phases of the moon. Astrologers who make horoscopes and predict the future use all these aspects.

The meaning of houses in the signs of the zodiac

Horoscope lovers should remember that the names of the signs of the zodiac come from the nearest constellations, but you should not confuse the signs of the zodiac with the constellations themselves.

The history of the signs of the zodiac begins thousands of years ago, when a person noticed the relationship between the position of the planets and their impact on the main characteristics and preferences of a person.

The most important influence on the astrological chart of a person is the position of the Sun in a certain sign of the zodiac circle on the person’s birthday.

An individual horoscope quite accurately determines the character of a person, depending on what the signs of the zodiac are, and how they affect the temperament, determination, talents, spiritual qualities, relationships, and even the appearance of a person.

However, it is not uncommon for people born under the same sun sign to have significant differences in character and appearance.

It is believed that people born under the influence of different astrological constellations even outwardly differ. What do zodiac signs look like? You need to look in the natal chart of a person.

Basically, a person’s appearance is influenced by the relationship of the Sun with the planets and the zodiac sign located within the first house at the time of birth.

If we consider children's signs of the zodiac, more attention should be paid to the Moon and its position, since it will be responsible for the child's subconscious and talents. This will be extremely useful at the time of deciding the direction in which it is better to develop the baby.

The meaning of the signs of the zodiac

In order to accurately determine the main character traits of a person’s zodiac sign, you need to carefully study the influence of the planets on a person’s self-esteem, his creative abilities and temperament.

As a rule, the designation of the signs of the zodiac according to the location of the Sun is aimed at identifying common characteristics of those born in the same period of time. By studying the features of the signs of the zodiac and their influence, a person gets the opportunity to properly build their relationships with others, business partners or a loved one.

In order to better show the differences between representatives of one zodiac sign, special attention should be paid to the influence of other planets.

In studying the most interesting things about the signs of the zodiac, a general characteristic will be the first step towards determining the character, and the location of the planets and their relationships can, to one degree or another, complement the characteristics of a person according to the sign of the zodiac.

A more in-depth analysis of the astrological chart helps to determine the areas of life in which a person will experience difficulties.

The love compatibility of a couple implies an analysis of not only a spiritual, but also a sexual harmonious connection, which can be identified by studying the description of the signs of the zodiac in terms of the temperament of the partners and the harmonious aspects between their planets.

If we take into account the influence of the symbols of the zodiac signs on the events of the past, present and future, we can avoid unwanted problems in a person's life.

Symbols of the zodiac signs in order: meaning, pictures

Nowadays it is difficult to find a person who has not heard anything about the circle of the Zodiac. Moreover, very often people, getting to know each other, are interested in what constellation they were born under. It is no secret that, looking through - in search of an answer to a question of interest - horoscopes, many of us are feverishly trying to find similar character traits and trace / compare life situations. It's as if we're trying to fit into the frame of character description, limited by date of birth. Does everyone know what the symbols of the zodiac signs mean?

A bit about the history of symbols

To deal with such a system as the Zodiac, you need to make a short digression into its history. The word "zodiac" has Greek roots and is translated as "animals in a circle" (sometimes the expression "animals in a wheel" is used). This circle is divided into twelve completely equal sectors, each of which is named after one of the constellations. The zodiac was known more than four thousand years ago, in ancient Babylon. In those ancient times, it was depicted as a circle, which included the constellations, and the luminary revolved around it. It was believed that it was the moon. This was explained by the absence of special astronomical instruments in the oldest, with which you can observe the constellations in the daytime.

In the five hundred years BC, the zodiac circle is undergoing major changes. It was divided into equal shares, and each was given a name that corresponded to a particular constellation. The ancient inhabitants of Babylon began to take into account the movement of not only the Moon, but also other luminaries, in particular the Sun.

After Babylon fell, the ancient Greeks took over. It was they who continued to study the movement of heavenly bodies. It was the Greeks who introduced the term "zodiac", which has successfully survived to this day.

Undoubtedly, over the long history of the existence of the Circle, adjustments have been made. For example, the constellation Luhunga (Peasant), known since the time of Babylon, was renamed Aries. And the constellation Libra in ancient times, apparently, was not recognized at all. The first mention of it refers to the second century AD.

Despite the thousand-year history, the zodiac circle, it would seem, has retained its appearance. But still, the key points have been significantly changed. For example, among the ancient Greeks, the zodiac wheel was divided not into twelve, but into thirteen sectors. Over time, the thirteenth constellation - Ophiuchus - was lost, and possibly specifically thrown away.

    Ancient Greek Zodiac

Medieval astrologers made one, but very serious mistake. Restoring the astrological knowledge lost during the Inquisition, they took as a basis the calculations of Ptolemy, which have changed significantly over one and a half thousand years, which is quite natural. And the most important "blunder" can be called a shift in the reference point (the vernal equinox). When Ptolemy did his calculations, she was in the sign of Aries. Unfortunately, the ancient Greeks blindly copied the existing zodiac, and in the meantime, the main reference point has moved to the sign of Pisces. Today, even a schoolboy knows that every fourth year is a leap year, that is, in four years a day of error comes up, and then what can we say about the past thousands of years? Despite this, the modern zodiac, which we, by the way, for some reason call the Chinese or Oriental, begins with Aries. Here we will begin to analyze the symbols of the signs of the zodiac.

    Elements of the zodiac

However, before we begin to describe and decipher the mentioned symbolic images, we should briefly dwell on one more important point. We are talking about the elements, of which there are four: Water, fire, Air and Earth. Each of them patronizes a group of 3 signs:

    1. Signs of the water element - Pisces, Scorpio, Cancer.

    2. Fire signs - Leo, Sagittarius, Aries.

    3. Capricorn, Virgo and Taurus belong to the elements of the earth.

    4. And the element of air is personified by Aquarius, Libra and Gemini.

Each of the mentioned elements influences its group of signs, endowing people born under one or another constellation with the corresponding character traits.

Well, now we will try to describe and decipher the signs of the zodiac (symbols) in order. After all, many, taking a horoscope in their hands, do not understand the meanings of seemingly completely meaningless hieroglyphs that bear little resemblance to the image of zodiac figures.

    Zodiac signs. Symbols. Images

And we will start, perhaps, with Aries - the first sign in the modern circle of the zodiac. Its symbol is two arcs, which, intersecting at the bottom, create a kind of ellipse, a kind of drop. The arcs are slightly inclined downward, symbolizing the energy-informational message. If we consider them separately, then we can talk about spiritual qualities of different directions.

The graphic symbol representing Aries looks a bit like a modified "V". His interpretation can be considered the horns of a ram or even the whole head. According to another version, in front of us is an image of the area of the nose and eyebrows of a person. In any case, it is a symbol of progressive power, courage and initiative, the desire for life. Be that as it may, those born under the sign of Aries are stubborn and stubborn. They belong to the category of people who first do and then think. As a rule, representatives of the sign in question have wide foreheads and sharp facial features. Interestingly, they are more prone to head injuries than others.

We continue to study the signs of the Zodiac (symbols) in order. Our next one is Taurus. Its image resembles two horns placed on a circle. Consequently, we are again dealing with a peculiar image of the head of a horned animal, only this time - a bull. The drawing also symbolizes stubbornness, but along with it - steadfastness, slowness, and sometimes laziness of Taurus. The vast majority of them are born plump and round. Slender Taurus is a rarity. They appear only when some strong factors at birth affect their natal chart.

The symbol of Taurus contains a characteristic of two opposite principles - the Moon, as the energy of the soul, developing the feminine principle, and the Sun, which symbolizes solar energy, the Spirit. This is a sign of perseverance, will, development. The Spirit is dominated by the Soul, which indicates the proximity of Taurus to the Earth and Nature, and not to God and the cosmos. Among other things, these people are characterized by endurance and endurance, the ability to hide and store what they have acquired, thanks to which a huge potential of energy, including spiritual energy, is accumulated.

One of the characters that is easy enough to interpret. These are two I's. At the same time, they resemble the Roman numeral two. However, why be surprised? This is Gemini - the sign of the zodiac, the symbol of which personifies the eternal struggle of two personalities in one person. No wonder people born under this constellation are considered hypocritical. But back to symbolism.

In this case, this is the possibility of connecting the incompatible: the waxing and waning moon, perceiving the past and the future. In many cultures, Gemini characterizes the path of development, and at the same time the sunset and decline. According to another version, this symbol is a combination of day and night, black and white, good and evil.

Geminis tend to be torn between two decisions, two questions, most often mutually exclusive. They rush to extremes: into darkness or light, evil or good. It is always difficult to determine which of the Gemini you are currently communicating with. They are easy to distinguish in the crowd - you just need to pay attention to a person whose actions do not match the words, and whose behavior changes every five minutes. They usually do several things at once, eat quickly and talk.

This symbol is quite complex. Outwardly, it resembles two inverted commas, one above the other. This is Cancer - the sign of the zodiac, the symbol of which personifies duality. This is a feminine sign. The graphic image means femininity, motherhood, but at the same time perseverance and tenacious grip.

In the usual interpretation, the symbol of Cancer is represented as two whirlwinds, two beginnings. This is necessary for the revival of a new life. The drawing is often perceived as the closing claws of cancer or as the process of fusion of male and female cells.

Since Cancer is a sign with a strongly developed feminine principle, men born under it are often impressionable and sensitive natures. In addition, typical representatives of this zodiac character adore their families, and especially their mothers, they will not argue with them under any circumstances.

    Leo: symbol, meaning

Sometimes the symbols of the signs of the zodiac are very intricate. An example is a curved line with a circle at one end. And who does this very original symbol of the zodiac sign represent? Leo, of course, is the best way to "fit" into such an intricate characterization. Judge for yourself: does not the smooth line resemble the wavy, curly and completely recalcitrant mane of a predator? Graceful and sophisticated, Leos can easily be distinguished from a huge crowd thanks to luxurious, thick curls that organically complement dark tanned skin and, as a rule, brown eyes.

The elegance of this symbol indicates the refined aristocracy, love of freedom, sensitivity of Lviv. It's funny, but there is only one thing that is not subject to the strong and proud representatives of this sign. They are unable to style their unruly hair. They can be straightened with an iron or curled with a curling iron, you can even tie them into a tight knot, but anyway, sooner or later, one of them will break out.

Many experts believe that symbols, pictures of the signs of the Zodiac usually very clearly characterize those who belong to them. Well, they are probably right. Virgo belongs to the element of Earth. She is the only woman in the entire system. It personifies the ancient Greek goddess Demeter, the patroness of Nature, crops, fertility. Here she is - Virgo, the sign of the Zodiac, whose symbol is a capital letter "M" with a neat curl on the right. Most likely, its creators had in mind the reproductive function of a woman.

Virgos often promote a healthy lifestyle. They are critical of their own weight, nutrition, appearance, health status. There is an opinion that it was the Virgos who invented the first, most daring diets.

Graphic images of the signs of the Zodiac surprisingly accurately emphasize not only the characteristic external features, but also the internal qualities of people. This statement can be attributed to Libra. Their symbol is a kind of hat over a straight horizontal line. This is the personification of scales (a symbol of justice), and after all, all those born under this sign are fair judges who are able to resolve any conflict by carefully listening to both sides.

In hermetic, alchemical and kabbalistic teachings, scales are a symbol of the bifurcation of the spiritual and bodily, heavenly and earthly, and in the Bible - the balance between the outer and inner worlds. They identify wisdom and a return to unity through a truce of opposites.

Recognizing people belonging to this sign in your environment is quite simple. It is only necessary to start a small conflict, and pay attention to who will be the first to listen to the arguments and arguments of the parties.

    Scorpio: zodiac sign, symbol

Water Scorpio perfectly remembers long-standing grievances (which, by the way, everyone has long forgotten about) and will not miss the opportunity to avenge them. The Latin letter "M", ending with a small arrow on the right, which just symbolizes a poisonous sting. Scorpio never confesses his thoughts of revenge. They are kept in the strictest confidence.

The next character of the Circle is the Fiery Sagittarius. The sign of the zodiac, the symbol of which clearly depicts a raised bow and arrows fired at random objects. These people can greatly injure those around them and those close to them with the arrows of their honesty, completely without thinking about what hurts their pride. Sagittarians are not burdened with excessive diplomacy and a sense of tact.

In the traditional interpretation, this symbol is cosmic, it expresses the idea of a perfect man, who is both a physical and spiritual being, worthy of divine origin. The arrow is a symbol of spiritual evolution and inner transformation.

Next in line is the zodiac sign Capricorn, whose symbol is the intricately twisted horns of a proud and fast mountain goat. This is one version. Another says that the horns make up only a fragment of a pattern that resembles the letter "V", and the rest are the tails of a mythical creature - a non-existent sea goat. In any case, this is the personification of wisdom, which develops beyond its years, from early childhood. And also the drawing means determination and courage, which help to overcome any obstacles. Interestingly, Capricorns have a “built-in” aging resistance system. They always look much younger than their years.

The symbol of Capricorn represents the aspiration upward, the ascent to light and life. This is on the one hand. And on the other - a rapid fall into the void. This is expressed by the duality of the "monster" itself - a half-goat - half-fish, an inhabitant of mountain peaks and the deep sea.

The symbols of the zodiac signs quite often consist of straight lines. Aquarius is no exception. Two parallel broken lines mean fast flowing water. Others believe that this is a graphic representation of electricity. After all, the abode of Aquarius is Uranus.

Evaluating everything critically, representatives of this sign are the most intelligent in the zodiac wheel. They are great debaters. Don't believe? In a group of people, express any thought, and the first person who objected to you will most likely be an Aquarius. And not because he categorically disagrees with you. It's just hard for him to resist the argument. Getting him to change his point of view is almost impossible.

Pisces zodiac sign: symbol and meaning

This personification of a dual nature is somewhat reminiscent of the Gemini symbol. Two fish swimming in different directions, depicted by two curved lines. In the middle they are connected by a small segment. This is a vivid symbol of two struggling souls living in one person.

A complex and very sensitive sign. People born under it, as a rule, live in their own, only they understand the world. But if it seems to you that Pisces limply go with the flow, hiding from conflicts, then you are mistaken! They are very ambitious, aggressive and capable of going to great lengths to achieve their goals. With a few sarcastic barbs, they are able to trample on all your attempts to build a relationship.

Today we tried to learn a little more about the mysterious signs of the zodiac. Symbols, pictures, descriptions and meanings of all representatives of the zodiacal circle have been, are and will be of interest to humanity as long as it exists. And you can talk about it endlessly.

    Zodiac signs

This term has other meanings, see Zodiac signs (meanings). Zodiac signs- 12 sectors of 30° each, into which the zodiac belt is divided in astrology, each of these sections is assigned certain metaphysical properties that play a role in the analysis of horoscopes.

    History of occurrence

The division of the ecliptic into twelve parts goes back to the sexagesimal number system and astronomy of ancient Babylon, which served as the basis for dividing the year into twelve months, just as the division of the celestial circle into 360 angular fractions adopted there (approximately in accordance with the number of days in a year) was the source for division 360 degree circles in geometry.

Although the names of the signs of the zodiac come from the zodiac constellations, these concepts differ significantly. Constellation - an astronomical concept, meaning a section of the celestial sphere with boundaries established by virtue of historical tradition. Currently, the boundaries of the constellations are officially used, determined by the decision of the First General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in 1922 (spherical, often irregularly shaped, polygons with boundaries running parallel to the latitudes and longitudes of the equatorial coordinate system). At the same time, the location of a celestial body in one or another sign of the zodiac is determined by its ecliptic longitude (regardless of latitude), so we can say that the signs of the zodiac are equal sectors of the celestial sphere with vertices at the ecliptic poles, based on segments of 1/12 of the ecliptic circle. The beginning of the zodiac circle and the first sign of the zodiac is the vernal equinox, then the signs follow the course of the annual movement of the Sun.

The classical zodiac system took shape in the middle of the 1st millennium BC. e., when the vernal equinox was in the constellation Aries, and the zodiacal signs were named according to the constellations located in the corresponding sectors, in fact, in that era the concepts of the zodiacal constellation and the sign did not differ, however, due to the precession of the earth's axis, it turned out that over time the signs shift relative to constellations in the western direction (or, what is the same, the stars are shifted relative to the signs in the east). Most astrological traditions have retained the linkage of the zodiac to the equinoxes and solstices ("tropical zodiac"), however, some schools consider the signs of the zodiac to be areas of the ecliptic that roughly correspond to the zodiac constellations in the current era (that is, they use the "sidereal zodiac"). Usually, the signs in the sidereal zodiac are still considered equal to 30 °, but there is no certainty regarding the point of origin of the zodiac: it is usually indicated that the displacement of the sidereal zodiac relative to the tropical zodiac is “about one sign” (that is, about a precession in two millennia), sometimes a value of 21°. In Vedic astrology, the sidereal zodiac is generally accepted with a shift in the present era of about 24 °. The movement of the vernal equinox along the signs of the sidereal zodiac explains the concept of "astrological eras".

In addition, in the present era, the ecliptic does not pass through 12, but through 13 constellations (according to the boundaries established by the IAS), therefore, although astrology continues to use the classic twelve ecliptic sectors, in fact, there are thirteen zodiac constellations now .. However, in some esoteric schools, it is also separately considered "Sign of Ophiuchus".

In light of the spread of mass popular astrology in the 20th century and, in particular, the characteristics of a person according to the zodiac position of the Sun, which is easily determined by the calendar, the concept of "zodiac sign" is often used to refer to the corresponding period, as well as people born during this period (that is, having in the natal chart the position of the Sun in this sign).

Names and images of the signs of the zodiac

The names of the signs come from the names of the twelve corresponding zodiac constellations in which the Sun alternately resides in its annual movement. The signs of the zodiac, which are the main element of astrology, have only historical significance for modern astronomy.

There is a version according to which the names of the signs arose based on the exploits of Hercules.

    Use in astrology

The vernal equinox is the beginning of the sign Aries and the entire circle of zodiacal signs in Western astrology.

In astrology, the position of the Sun, Moon, planets and other celestial objects in the signs of the zodiac is believed to correlate with events on earth (it is sometimes said that the position of the planets "affects events on earth"). There is no scientific evidence for this effect.

Astrologers believe that the fate and character of a person is reflected in his astrological chart, while it is important in what signs the celestial bodies were at his birth. The sign in which the Sun was at the time of a person’s birth is sometimes called his “solar sign” (the term “zodiac sign” or simply “sign” is often used in the press, which is not entirely correct from the point of view of many professional astrologers). Astrologers attach great importance to the position of the Moon in the astrological chart - lunar sign and position of the Ascendant - ascending sign. However, meaningful astrological analysis is considered possible only when all factors and their interactions are taken into account.

Characteristics of the signs of the zodiac

Each sign belongs to one of the four elements: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), and refers to one of three triads (crosses): cardinal(Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) fixed(Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) or mutable(Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces).

Zodiacal signs correlate with the qualities of the planets according to the principle of "friendship" or consonance. Astrologers believe that each sign is controlled by a planet (in modern astrological currents, two planets and even asteroids and fictitious points can control a sign, but this is not consistent with the classical astrological paradigm), this sign is also called "abode"; the sign opposite to it is called the sign of the exile of the planet. On the other hand, each planet has an "elevation" ("exaltation") in one of the signs and is "in the fall" in the opposite sign.

Sun in constellations and signs of the zodiac

The signs of the zodiac can be determined both by the tabular method according to the date of the civil calendar, and by calculation, based on the position of the Sun on the ecliptic.

Unlike the signs of the zodiac, in astronomy the periods of passage of the Sun through the zodiac constellations are very uneven (Virgo - 44 days, Cancer - 21 days, Scorpio - 7 days). In Russia, when publishing horoscopes, variant II is mainly used.

    Character groups

In astrology, signs are grouped into four trigons * (Fire, Earth, Air and Water, see Element (alchemy)), by three crosses (cardinal, permanent, mutable), by four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter), in two pairs of hemispheres (northern and southern, eastern and western).

Trigons unite four groups of three signs, between which there are 120 °. Their meaning corresponds to the four basic temperaments.

Crosses unite three groups - cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). The signs in the crosses are separated from each other by 90°.

In a cardinal cross, each element intensively begins its development, in a fixed cross it reaches its maximum and stability, in a mutable cross it weakens and dissipates. For example, the sign Aries is the beginning of the element Fire, Leo is the maximum of the element Fire, Sagittarius is the decline of the element Fire.

It has long had different designations for each sign. How the symbols of the signs of the zodiac look like, we will present below, and at the same time we will consider the prerequisites for which such a system of notation has developed.

As you know, there are twelve signs of the zodiac in classical Western astrology, as well as in its Vedic predecessor. They are symbolized either by animals or mythical characters. Not everyone knows, but such designations of zodiac signs in astrology are not accidental. Each of them corresponds to a certain legend that connects the heroes of folk tales with certain constellations. For people of Western culture, this connection is given and determined by Greco-Roman mythology. According to it, the classical zodiac is built.

    Aries

The first sign is Aries. It is also called a ram. According to legend, during his lifetime it was a golden-fleeced ram, which Hermes presented to the pious woman Nephele. The latter was the wife of the unreasonable king Athamant, until he left her for a new lover named Ino - an insidious woman with a jealous heart and a cruel disposition. Ino hated the two children of Athamantes - Frix and Hella, whom he had from Nephele, and tried in every possible way to get rid of them. During crop failure and famine, with the help of intrigue and bribery, she was able to convince the king that the gods would have mercy and save the country from destruction if he sacrificed his offspring. The gullible king ordered to prepare an altar for sacrifice, which Nefela found out about and, of course, decided to save her children. To do this, she asked that same golden-fleece ram to transport them to a safe place, which he did. On the way, however, Hella fell into the sea and drowned, and the ungrateful Phrixus, having reached a safe haven, killed the ram, sacrificing it to Zeus. The father of all gods accepted him and for his courage gave him a place in heaven. The denoting sign is the following character: "♈".

    Taurus

The next sign is Taurus. This sign is the image of Zeus himself, who took the form of a beautiful bull to charm young Europe - the most beautiful daughter of the Phoenician king. Carrying her on his back to Crete, he made her his mistress. From this relationship they had three children. The symbol for this sign is "♉".

    Twins

This sign is also based on the story of the love affairs of Zeus. This time, in the form of a swan, he seduced Leda, the wife of the king of Sparta. From this affair, Leda gave birth to two eggs, from which a pair of twins came out. It is believed that two girls were from her legal spouse, and two boys - from Zeus. Their names were Pollux and Castor. And they loved each other so much that when Castor died in the war, Pollux promised to sacrifice himself if Zeus would restore life to his brother. As a reward for such love, loyalty and readiness for self-sacrifice, the lord of the gods gave them a lot in heaven, where other signs of the zodiac were located. The designations for Gemini are based on paired anthropomorphic images. And schematically, the symbol of this zodiac looks like this: "♊".

    Cancer

In the legends, cancer seems to be more of a negative character - Hera sent him to prevent Hercules from killing the Lernean hydra. But the hero crushed the cancer. Nevertheless, for his obedience, he received a place in heaven from Hera, and he was accepted by the signs of the zodiac. The designations of cancer symbolize that the sun slows down in this place. Its symbol is: "♋".

    a lion

The constellation of the lion recalls another feat of Hercules - the battle with the Demigod defeated this invulnerable beast, and his memory was immortalized in the constellation of the same name. Lion symbol: "♌".

    Virgo

The signs of the zodiac, whose designations usually contain zoomorphic motifs, also have such an interesting image as a virgin. It is rooted in the myth of Pandora's box, from which numerous curses fell upon the earth, and the gods left the earth. So, the constellation Virgo is the goddess Astrea, the last of the gods who went to heavenly heights. Virgo sign: "♍".

    Scales

Libra continues the previous mythological story. Under this constellation lies Themis - the goddess of justice and the mother of Astrea. According to the legend, when humanity reaches the golden age in its development, Themis and Astrea will return to earth.

The designation of the signs of the zodiac is usually zoomorphic, sometimes anthropomorphic, but Libra is the only constellation personified by an inanimate object. Its symbol is "♎".

    Scorpion

This constellation represents the very scorpion that killed Orion, the son of the god of the seas, Poseidon. There are many versions of how this happened, but in the end both of them - both Orion and Scorpio - fell into the sky, becoming constellations. The sign of Scorpio looks like this: "♏".

    Sagittarius

The signs of the zodiac, the designations of which were presented above, represent either an animal or people. The exception is Libra - neither an animal nor a person, and this constellation Sagittarius is both an animal and a person at the same time. Under his guise is the centaur Chiron. He went to heaven as a reward for nobility, replacing Prometheus on the rock, to which the latter was chained for giving the people of Sagittarius the following: "♐".

    Capricorn

Under the name of Capricorn in the zodiac, the image of the cheerful god Pan is immortalized, although he is most often depicted as his distant prototype - the Babylonian god Ea, who had the body of a goat with a fish tail. Schematically, this constellation is depicted as follows: "♑".

    Aquarius

The constellation of Aquarius perpetuates the memory of the Greek Noah - the righteous Deucalion, who alone with his wife escaped during the Great Flood. For his piety, he was honored to become a constellation. Its symbol is "♒".

    Fish

The signs of the zodiac, whose designations make up the celestial circle, end in. These creatures in this case mean the goddess of love Aphrodite and her son Eros, who were turned into fish by Zeus to save them from the terrible monster Typhon. Pallas Athena lifted them up to heaven. This constellation is designated as follows: "♓".
