Name origin

Slavic etymology of the name Perun (pra-Slav. *Perun) is fairly obvious to most researchers. It is believed that it comes from the verb *perti, *pьrǫ "hit, beat" (cf. A number of researchers compare the name of Perun with the names of the Thunderer (and other gods) among other Indo-European peoples - from lit. Perkūnas, Latvian. Pērkons, other ind. Parjanya, Hittite. Pirwa- and others. Directly linking the name of Perun with the names of other Indo-European thunderers is not entirely legitimate. These words go back to the same root *per, however, the name of the Thunderer among the Balts and Indo-Aryans also has the suffix -k-, which is not in the Slavic *Perunъ. Therefore, lit. Perkūnas, Latvian. Pērkons and other ind. Parjánya goes back to the Proto-Indo-European name of the oak - *perkṷu-, since the oak is the sacred tree of the Thunderer. In the Slavic languages, this word has not been preserved, since even in ancient times it was taboo due to sacredness. All this makes it possible to reconstruct the connection between the Indo-European Thunderer and the oak grove on the top of the mountain where lightning strikes.

Some researchers radically separate Proto-Indo-European *perō(ṷ)nos "thunder, god of thunder" and Proto-Indo-European *perūn(V) "mountain", protesting against any of their relationship. Rapprochement between them, they believe, could only happen a second time, as a result of popular rethinking.

The myth of the origin of Perun

To our ancestors, the god of thunder Perun was presented as a tall, stately, fair-haired and blue-eyed warrior in golden armor and a red cloak with an ax (or club) in his hand. Sometimes Perun used a shield and a spear in battle. But on the battlefield, he always appeared surrounded by thunder and flashes of lightning. Veles has always been openly opposed to Perun, and many myths and legends about their mutual hostility have been preserved in history. As Perun came to his senses, he said that he would take revenge on the Skipper-beast and would definitely find his sisters.
He overcame many obstacles in the dark kingdom of Navi, faced many horrors, but still found Zhiva, Marena and Lelya, turned into monsters by the Skipper. Perun disenchanted the sisters and went to the Skipper's palace, which was made of human bones.

He was not only shunned, but also treated as an attribute of power, and power, as usual in Russia, has always, from time immemorial (and as we see in the entire Slavic world) is not honored. Because Perun covers the entire reality of the Universe and the Nature of the earth, that, according to the logic of things, there is no place for other gods, or they should only serve Perun, thus personifying only one of his many-sided sides.

This suggests the conclusion: if Perun was in the host of the ancient gods, he did not occupy a special prominent place, but as usual, to reinforce someone's isolated ambitions, this hypostasis was removed from the shadows and presented to little Vladimir, as a form of possible personification of power. Why Vladimir, who was in power in the singular, tried to make this deity the sole overlord of all Slavic, but more Russian lands. Here, the formation of monarchical power is evident, when, even under the traditionally existing Veche, i.e. contractual system, the “last word” is already appearing, and this is the word of the prince, supported by the weapons of his squads sparkling in the sun. The meaning of force (weapons) comes to the fore and the primordial Slavic gods are forgotten. They are being replaced by, as we would say today, foreigners: Khors, Simargl, Makosh. These foreigners still have a connection with Russia, but no more than that existing in folk beliefs, but are already little "used" by the people, except that not always in positive aspect. Svarog, Stribog and Veles are also in use. But all sources unanimously claim that between Veles and Perun there is an endless, bloody war. It continues in other ways, and today it is expressed in the relationship of meat-eaters and vegetarians to each other. If you stand on this ground, arguing that Perun is a form of sole power, this is the demolition of ancient foundations, this is the beginning of a monarchical manifestation in Russia, then it is quite natural that Mr. monotheism, but completely did not recognize the presence of any associates, associates and advisers in one god. But only admirers, followers and slaves. It is also understandable that Vladimir, paying tribute to his first deity, did not chop him into pieces, as he did with the rest of the gods of the temple (after all, they could burn them according to military custom), but “sent him on his way”, along the river. Therefore, even today, this character of mythology is very impressed by this character of mythology, and they are ready to hang so many regalia on him that the latter is left to go and drown himself from all this "burden". Are there really so few people who understand that with these, if I may say so, “makeweights”, we are killing the memory of our ancestors.
