In besieged Leningrad, hungry, weakened people with great faith fell to the miraculous icons preserved in churches. They also came to the chapel of Xenia the Blessed, closed in 1940, at the Smolensk cemetery. They prayed at closed doors and, according to a long tradition, wrote notes with requests and prayers. The survivors later recalled that as children they perceived the saint as a real person living with them in the besieged city, because adults often said: “We must go to Ksenyushka” or “Let's go to Ksenyushka, she will help.”

Evidence has been preserved of the apparitions and assistance during the war years of the Monk Xenia of Petersburg not only to the inhabitants of Leningrad, but also to the soldiers of the Red Army, even during the liberation of Prague in 1945.

Many believers also visited the window of the tomb of the holy reverend father John of Kronstadt, people prayed to the great miracle worker.

Numerous legends and legends about miraculous phenomena, signs and God's help, revealed in besieged Leningrad, have been preserved. One of these legends tells about the evacuation of people from the city by boats across Lake Ladoga. On the eve of the voyage, three boats were hastily loaded, and on one of them an old woman walked with an icon.

For a long time, some believers in the blockade remembered the priest's daughter, who walked with her friends along the Petrograd side with the icon of the Virgin wrapped in a clean rag. They went around whole neighborhoods with prayer, and not a single “prayed” house was destroyed.

The believing blockade N. M. Fedorova told such a story. In the late autumn of 1941, there was no food left in their family, and the mother boiled old newspapers for several days and gave them to the children to eat. When they were completely exhausted, she went out into the street and went as if in oblivion, despite the artillery shelling. A sailor running past, wanting to save her, pushed her, and her mother fell into the snow, and when she got up, she saw that under her lay three icons - St. Mother of God". The woman realized that the find was not accidental, because when she walked, she did not see anything on the ground. The woman picked up the icons, put them to her chest and wandered on. She walked staggeringly. Apparently she looked so exhausted that a passing car stopped. An unfamiliar military man came out of it and gave a bag with a kilogram of oats. Our Lady of Bread sent bread.

The mother happily went home and fed the children. And only this bag saved them from starvation. Since then, the Bread Icon of the Mother of God has been kept in the family as a shrine and never parted with it.

Another case of the help of the holy elder is given in the literature on Reverend Seraphim Vyritsky: “During the blockade, the Soshalsky family lived in Leningrad. Before the war, Zoya Soshalskaya often visited Vyritsa; during the bombing and shelling, she made it a habit to mentally, or even aloud, repeat: “Father Father Seraphim! Save-help!"

After the blockade was lifted, at the first opportunity she went to the elder. Arriving at his house on Maysky Prospekt, Zoya first asked:

Father, have you forgotten me?

But the biggest miracle is that in besieged Leningrad, people's faith did not fade away under inhuman conditions. Despite the prohibition of bell ringing in the 1930s, the bells survived in the Seraphim Church. At the beginning of the war, parishioners dismantled the floor and ceiling, dug deep pits and carefully, with prayer, buried the bells. And two and a half years later - on the morning of January 27, 1944 - the joyful news of the lifting of the blockade gathered exhausted people near the temple, who, in a single spontaneous impulse, removed the ceilings, gouged the frozen ground, took out and raised the bells. Without any permission from the authorities in the Seraphim Church, they rang on the day the blockade was broken at exactly 16:00. FIVE HOURS OF PRAYER: MIRACULOUS RESCUE OF A CHILD FROM THE WELL

This story happened last winter in one of the villages in Russia. Second-grader Stasik Vanyashev went downhill after school. There were many children. Ride from the heart. Mishka was the first to chill: "That's it, Staska, I went home." It was evening. Stasik was left alone. The last time he climbed the mountain and rushed down. Whoo! Wind in the ears, snow dust in the face, in a snowdrift - bang! He got up, took a step, and suddenly the snow cliff began to sag under his feet. Having broken the ice, the boy fell to the bottom. The icy water burned his legs and began to slowly rise up, soaking his clothes. Stasik peered into the twilight: ice growths hung from the walls of the well. The boy tried, clinging to the ice, to climb onto the ledge, but try to hold on to the icicles!

Once upon a time, when Stasik was little, he had terrible dreams. He woke up in the middle of the night and cried. It was then that his grandmother taught him the Lord's Prayer: if you are afraid, read "Our Father".

Falling into a black ice well, Stasik first of all began to call for help. But the lips quickly froze. It is good that there was a proven remedy for darkness and fear!

The young man phoned a potential employer and went for an interview. He was very worried: after all, he did not have managerial experience, he applied for a position with a promotion. But a few days later, the company called him back and said: "Congratulations, you are accepted. We looked at about 30 candidates and decided that you are the best fit for us."

Miracle #3. A pregnant young wife was about to undergo a paid ultrasound prescribed by doctors and suddenly discovered that not a penny of money was left in the house. Well, okay, you can live without ultrasound, but what to eat? At the same time, the only breadwinner in their family - her husband - was delighted at work with the news that the salary, which had already been delayed for two weeks, would be issued no one knows when.

But not every performance of prayer, or prayerfulness, is prayer. To stand in front of an icon in a church or at home and bow down is not yet prayer, but only an attribute of prayer. Icons, like relics and other relics, are associated with spiritual forces. Depending on who is depicted on the icon, he acts through it. In the city of Edessa in Syria, there lived a prince named Avgar, who suffered from an incurable disease (presumably leprosy). Hearing about Christ and about His miracles of healing, Abgar wished to see Him, hoping to receive healing. But, since it was impossible for the prince himself to go to Judea, he sent a letter to Jesus Christ with a request to visit him in Edessa. With a letter, Prince Avgar sent the skilful artist Ananias to depict the face of Jesus. The prince hoped through the image of Jesus Christ to get at least some relief from his illness.

With a princely letter, the artist Ananias reached Jerusalem. He found Jesus Christ who taught the people. Ananias, wasting no time, began to paint the face of the Savior, but he could not do it, for the Divine face of the Lord miraculously changed. Seeing this, Jesus asked St. Apostle Thomas to bring to Himself an artist. Ananias gave Jesus the prince's letter with a request. The Lord, having read the letter, ordered to bring water, washed His most holy face and wiped it with the square towel given to Him. On the canvas depicted a miraculous likeness divine face Jesus Christ. Giving it to the artist Ananias, Jesus said: “Take it and give it to the one who sent you!”
