Here it comes New Year, the clinking of glasses died down, the fireworks and fireworks went out. However, the next, no less bright holiday is approaching - Christmas. Where did the tradition of caroling at Christmas come from? What events is this holiday associated with, and how should it be celebrated? What fortune telling for Christmas will help lift the veil of future events? You will find answers to all of the above questions in this article.

What date is Christmas

According to the old style (according to the Julian calendar), this event was celebrated on December 25th. Currently, Christmas falls on January 7th, or more precisely on the night from the 6th to the 7th. In Rus', this holiday received official status in the 10th century, which was associated with the baptism of Prince Vladimir. Believers fast before Christmas - the period of abstinence from meat food is 40 days. The fast continues until the appearance of the first star on Christmas night.

What is the holiday associated with?

When Christians celebrate Christmas, they remember the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. The story of the birth of Jesus is given by the evangelists Matthew and Luke. According to the Bible, baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem because Mary and Joseph came to this city in connection with the census of the Roman Empire.

The birth of Christ was marked by the appearance of a wonderful star in the sky. Following a heavenly sign, the wise men came to worship the baby Jesus. They brought gifts with them - incense, gold and myrrh. Wanting to get rid of the Messiah, King Herod gave the order to destroy all infants under the age of two. However, an angel commanded Joseph and his family to flee to Egypt, which allowed Christ to be saved.

Carols for Christmas

Christmas Eve marks the beginning of the winter holidays. In the old days, at this time, noisy festivities, children and young people went to carol - go around the surrounding houses, congratulate the owners and receive sweets and other gifts in return. With the advent of Christmas, Christmas carols acquired a religious connotation. However, the very essence of this “ceremony” remained unchanged.

By the way, Christian carols were preceded by pagan carols associated with the cult of fertility. The name “Kolyada” itself belongs to one of the goddesses of the pagan pantheon, responsible for the harvest. The peasants sang chants and expressed wishes for prosperity and a good harvest in the new year.

Fortune telling for Christmas

Fortune telling using shadows. A simple, affordable and very popular method. You will need a large and flat plate, a blank sheet of paper, a candle and matches. The sheet should be crumpled and placed on a plate next to a lit candle. Based on the outlines of the cast shadow, the fortuneteller tries to predict his fate (intuitively). This method only works on Christmas night.

Fortune telling by wish. Suitable for those who have a domestic cat. Make a wish for yourself cherished wish, and then call the cat. If a cat crosses the threshold of the room with its right paw, then, alas, the wish will not come true. If with the left paw, then .

Fortune telling by apples (for the groom). This fortune telling for Christmas will allow you not only to find out the name of your future husband, but also to feast on it. You should take as many apples as you have potential suitors, and scratch the initials of the “candidate” on the bottom of each one. Then you need to go into a dark room and take a bite from each apple. Determine the best taste sweet fruit- the initials scrawled on it belong to your future husband.

Christmas is the most beautiful and bright winter holiday. In Orthodoxy, according to the new style, it is celebrated on the night of January 7th. Christmas comes to people on a frosty night at the hour of the midnight temple service in the light of the stars, the glow of candles and the loud singing of the choir. The sounds of children's voices, like the voices of angels praising God, fill the Universe with triumph. At this time, peace reigns on earth, and human hearts are filled with goodwill.
On this day two thousand years ago, an event took place in the city of Bethlehem - the birth of the Son of God - Jesus Christ. Heaven and earth glorified the Nativity of Christ.
When Jesus came into our world, he was not greeted with honor, wealth, or nobility. He had neither a cradle nor a house where He could appear. He was born in a cave where livestock slept and was placed in a manger where animal feed was stored.
The first who came to worship the Savior were simple shepherds, who were informed by an Angel about the miraculous birth of the Baby; the wise men, the ancient sages, came to Him from the east; the Star of Bethlehem showed them the way to Jerusalem. They brought Him gifts: as a tribute to the King - gold; for God - incense, for a person who is waiting for death - myrrh.
The symbol of eternal peace, joy and happiness is the Christmas evergreen decorated spruce, symbolizing eternal life. Her top is crowned with a beautiful Star of Bethlehem, who showed the Magi the way to Christ. On the branches of the spruce tree there were multi-colored balls, golden tinsel, figures of shepherds with small lambs and singing angels, candles and lanterns, as a reminder of the fires and lanterns that shone for the shepherds on the holy night. These lights, two thousand years later, continue to shine in every Christian home. Among the needles are silver bells that quietly ring back, They are similar to those that Palestinian shepherds put on their sheep. To increase the holiday joy, loved ones place gifts under the tree and hang sweets on the tree for children.
Christmas did not immediately become part of the Christian cult. The first Jewish Christians did not celebrate this holiday and did not know the date of birth of Jesus Christ, because... For them, the birth of a person meant the beginning of pain and sorrow. The holiday of Christmas was brought to Christianity by the Greeks, according to whose customs, the birth of a person is the beginning of life, which led to its celebration. However, there was no single date. And starting from the 3rd century, this holiday began to be celebrated on January 6. But in the 4th century, most likely, in order to supplant the Roman cult of the god Mithras, whose birth was celebrated on this day, Christmas began to be celebrated on December 25. In Rus' they began to celebrate the Nativity of Christ in the 10th century. - after the introduction of Christianity. This holiday was called Epiphany. It combined Epiphany and Christmas and was celebrated on January 6th.
Initially in Russia, which were forgotten after the holiday was banned in 1918. And only after Christmas trees were allowed to be installed in 1935, this holiday became less significant
m than New Year. All the attributes of Christmas - a tree with a star, which changed from seven-pointed to five-pointed, and gifts - became the attributes of a new Soviet holiday - the New Year. After the collapse of the Union, nothing returned to its place - so two holidays remained: a family holiday - New Year and Orthodox Christian holiday- Nativity.

Yuletide fortune-telling or Christmas fortune-telling is considered the most likely to come true. They are rooted in rituals pagan Rus' and enjoy well-deserved authority. They told fortunes during Christmas time (two weeks from January 6th to Christmas Day, January 19th).
Fortune telling took place according to ancient rituals. Each of the fortune tellers gave some personal item for fortune telling, usually a ring. All the rings were placed on a large dish and covered with an embroidered towel. While singing “podblyudnye” songs, the presenter took out the first ring he came across without looking. The content of the song, as a rule, in an allegorical sense, referred to the owner of the ring.
After each verse of the song, it was necessary to sing the obligatory chorus:
Who will take it out -
It will come true -
It will come true -
It won't pass.
Sometimes they added a borrowed word from great songs to the chorus: “Glory!”
Without these choruses, the fortune telling might not come true. They reinforced the prediction sung in the main verse of the “sub-bowl” song.

At such meetings, fortune-telling was done primarily for marriage. Here are examples of the most famous songs;
The ring was rolling
On velvet
The ring rolled
To the yacht.
Who will take it out -
It will come true -
It will come true -
It won't pass.

I'll swing the ring around the city, glory!
And I’ll go get that ring myself, thank you!
I’ll go myself, I’ll get to my dear one, thank you!

The milkweed jumps along the spruce tree,
Looking for milkweed milkweed;
It’s not a small milk mushroom that’s jumping, it’s a boyar’s son,
He’s not looking for a white tree, but a hawthorn tree.
To whomever they sang, good word!
Whoever gets it, it will soon come true,
The word doesn't go unnoticed!
(Towards marriage).

Well, if you don’t really want to get married, then perhaps the following couplet will appear on your ring:
I'm sitting at the bowl,
I drive with fives,
I'll sit still
I'll drive again.
(Stay as girls for now).

In addition to marriage, those gathered will probably be concerned about money issues in the coming year. Well, well, our ancestors have a verse for this case:
Rich men live across the river,
They are rowing pearls with shovels.
Who will take it out -
It will come true
It won't pass.
(To wealth).
Or more ornate:
The pike came from Nova Gorod,
She carried her tail from Bela Lake.
There are silver scales on the pike,
The pike has a pearly head.
Who did we sing to?
Good for you,
Who will take it out?
It will come true.
(To wealth).

Perhaps someone in the coming year will have a long journey from their home:
A sparrow sits on the partition,
The sparrow looks at the other side,
The sparrow speaks; "I'll fly away, I'll fly away
I’ll fly to the wrong side.”
(Towards departure).

Whatever they sing or predict for you, look for only a good sign in it! After all, ahead - whole year and you yourself will be able to implement your plans. Even if the ring did not reach the desired wish.

Hello, dear readers!

An amazing holiday is approaching - Christmas, and with it come the customs and rituals that we inherited from our ancestors. Christmas Eve, the holy evening before Christmas, the generous evening - this is what we call the period from January 6 to 7. Where did traditions come to us from, and how to properly celebrate this day in your family?

A little history

Paganism and Christianity strangely absorbed each other in Rus'. There is probably no country in the world where the pagan customs of their ancestors were so alive in the subconscious of the people.

On January 7 we go to church, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ in a new style. And in the evening, January 6th, we pay tribute Slavic traditions, sitting down to the Holy Supper, singing carols, telling fortunes... But many of the “rules” of Christmas Eve, which we try to observe, are not approved by the church and are considered sinful. Why?

Of course, the church is not against the holy supper, lighting a candle, uniting the family at a common table with the first star. The Holy Fathers associated this ancient custom with lines from the Gospel, where it was said that the Magi were notified of the birth of the Mission by the first star that appeared in the sky.

She led them to the manger, in which Mary gave birth to a baby. Hence the custom in Catholic countries to decorate homes with Christmas scenes and stage theatrical performances on this theme.

Inquisition in Western Europe literally “burned out” the remains ancient paganism. Christmas tree, Santa Claus, gifts - that's all that remains from those times.

There was no Inquisition in Russia, but paganism and Christianity fought for a long time for a place in people's minds. They are surprisingly intertwined in the national consciousness. Yes, we officially celebrate the Nativity of the Messiah, but we unconsciously carry over the entire atmosphere of this holiday from pre-Christian times.

The evening of January 6th among the ancient Slavs is the holiday of the annual Kol. One time cycle ended and another began. On this day, it was customary to glorify the departing Kolo of Svarog and St. Iriy, in which the souls of ancestors live. Let's revive our people's memory and remember how the ancient Slavs celebrated Christmas Eve.

Return to the past

On January 6th, all relatives were supposed to gather at the house of their parents or the eldest in the family. The table was set with 12 dishes, necessarily Lenten (later Christian tradition equated this number with the number of Jesus’ apostles), i.e. without butter, sour cream and meat. It could be:

  • vareniki;
  • cabbage rolls;
  • porridge;
  • fish;
  • borsch;
  • pies.

You could only drink it with uzvar (dried fruit compote). The table was sprinkled with hay - a symbol of prosperity, and then covered with a tablecloth and dishes were placed.

The main dishes were kutia (sweet porridge made from wheat grains) and round kalach (kolo, symbolizing the annual cycle). We tried to fast all day and not eat anything. The exceptions were small children and old people. They tried to reward the poor with food.

Another indispensable guest of the holiday was Didukh - a sheaf of wheat, which was placed in the corner of the hut. It symbolized Iriy - the heavenly country where the ancestors lived. The Slavs believed that on this day they came to a festive supper.

With the first star, the family sat down at the table. Before meals, prayers were said (today we read the “Our Father”) and ritual songs were sung - carols. Nowadays, they have turned into song congratulations that young people sing, congratulating neighbors, friends, and acquaintances.

The glorification of the god Rod or Dazhd-God was replaced by the glorification of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Many carols remained completely unchanged.

Since pagan times, there has been a tradition of dressing up in unusual costumes and going caroling from house to house. Festive clothes could be decorated with artificial flowers, wreaths, and bows. This is how our ancestors tried to scare away evil spirits.

There was a belief: if carolers do not look into someone’s house, the owners will face a bad year. Therefore, the doors were always opened to guests and presented with food and money. Those who kicked out the carolers were doomed to failure.

Sitting down at the table, it was not customary to talk much. It was forbidden to put a spoon on the table until the meal was over. All dishes had to be tasted at least a little so that the year would not be hungry. But you can’t eat everything put on the table, otherwise the year will be empty.

Some signs are also associated with the Holy Supper. For example, a girl or a guy could not sit on the corner of the table: family happiness would not take place. This is understandable: the Slavs considered the corner a concentration of strength and energy, which could interfere with a successful marriage.

A mandatory attribute on the table was a lit candle. But if today it is church candle in honor of the birth of Christ, in ancient times it was lit in memory of ancestors. It was customary to treat people with bread and honey - this was the responsibility of the owner.

The rest gratefully accepted the treat. Supper was served to relatives who could not come to dinner. They even treated pets to something tasty so that they would not be angry with their owner.

After the meal, the dishes were left until the morning. It was believed that the souls of ancestors also came to the supper. All food was removed only in the morning.

Great importance had signs and fortune telling, because how will you meet next year, that's how he will be. The Slavs believed that at the turn of the cycles the future could open up for a person.

How to guess?

Signs are perhaps the most harmless fortune telling. They were born from folk observations and were associated mainly with natural phenomena, because the harvest and the well-being of the family largely depended on the weather.

  1. If the sky was starry on Holy Evening, it means that chickens will lay eggs and peas will crop up.
  2. If ice freezes on the trees, there will be a harvest of fruits and nuts.
  3. If there is a lot of snow, expect an apple harvest.
  4. If the moon is shining brightly, expect good melons.
  5. If the sky is clear and clear on Christmas Day, you should expect a good harvest.
  6. It was necessary to pull a blade of grass out of a stack: if it is long, the year will be fruitful, if it is short, expect famine.
  7. After dinner, the spoon had to be tied with an ear of rye. This amulet was needed so that the cows in the herd would not get lost.
  8. On the night of January 6th to 7th, you should keep a dream book with you. All dreams on this night are considered prophetic, especially on the waxing moon.

The girls used to tell fortunes about the groom on Holy Evening. There are many such fortune tellings that have survived to this day.

On the mirrors

The most terrible fortune telling, since it is believed that on this night in the mirror you can see not only your future husband, but also evil spirits. You need to place two mirrors opposite each other and light 2 candles. A mirror corridor should form in the mirror.

There should be no animals in the room; those present should be quiet and not look in the mirror. The girl peers into the mirrored corridor where she should see her groom.

On the boot

They threw a boot at the gate. Whichever direction it falls, the groom will be from there.

Addressed

The girls went out into the street and asked the name of the first man passing by. His name will have to match the name of his future husband.

On coffee grounds or on wax

We made some cool coffee and drank. If fortune telling was carried out on wax, they lit a candle and dripped melted wax into a bowl of cold water. Figures made from wax or in coffee grounds were interpreted as predictions of the future.

And today, just for fun, the girls are going to tell fortunes about the groom. Who knows, maybe our ancestors really had the ability to magic and passed on their knowledge to us?

I'm sure today you learned a lot of interesting information about the holy evening before Christmas. I wish you a fun and tasty feast, carolers in the house and a good year.

See you soon, friends!

Christmas Eve, which is called Christmas Eve and is celebrated on the evening of January 6, is an important day for Christians.

Christmas Eve and the night before Christmas, in folk tradition, are associated with many beliefs and rituals, including maiden fortune-telling.

Christmas Eve has always been considered special. By folk beliefs, the night before Christmas, which is Orthodox calendar comes from January 6 to 7, all prohibitions are lifted and mysterious forces penetrate the Earth.

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is the last day of the Nativity Fast, established so that people cleanse themselves through repentance, prayer and fasting, and celebrate the Nativity of Christ with a pure heart.

Christmas Eve began to be called Christmas Eve, as it is believed, because of the tradition of eating sweet porridge on this day - “sochivo”, grains of wheat and other cereals boiled with honey.

Porridge had a special meaning - the grain symbolized resurrected life, and honey - the sweetness of the future blissful life.

On Christmas Eve, Christians remember the Gospel story about the worship of the Infant God by the Eastern sages. Magi from the east brought gifts to the newborn Savior: gold, incense and myrrh.

On Christmas Eve the fast is not as strict as on other days. last week Nativity Fast.

On Christmas Eve, the service of Vespers is combined with the liturgy and is performed in the morning, therefore the Orthodox fast until the moment when a candle is brought into the center of the church and before which the troparion to the Nativity of Christ is sung.

Traditionally, a brew of pears, cherries, apples, plums, raisins and other fruits boiled in water was also served on the table. The table on which the meal was located was covered with hay or straw, as a reminder of the manger in which the newborn Jesus was laid.

In the old days in Rus', it was forbidden to use piercing or cutting objects on Christmas Eve, as this could lead to illness. According to tradition, on these days men did not go hunting or slaughter cattle, and women and girls put off sewing and knitting until the end of the holidays.

People believed that housework could also bring trouble to the house.

Christmas Eve has long been considered best time for fortune telling, since it almost always came true. Therefore, taking advantage of the unusualness of this night, people wondered, trying to predict.

Fortune telling at Christmas has been very popular for many centuries. In the old days, fortune telling was done using candles, shadows, shoes, and so on. Fortune telling does not lose its relevance in our time.

Christmas fortune telling and carols

Fortune telling at Christmas aroused the greatest interest among girls who wanted to find out the name of their future spouse, and maybe see it in the mirror or in wedding ring his reflection.

The Church has a negative attitude towards any manifestation of divination and magic, and therefore condemns any attempts to find out the future, especially at Christmas. Despite this, people have been guessing and continue to guess.

The betrothed-mummer

The most popular are fortune telling for the fulfillment of a wish, for a betrothed or fiancée, or for the future.

On Christmas night, girls could find out the name of their future spouse and even see his face in the mirror. To do this, the girl sat down in the dark between two mirrors at midnight, lit candles and began to peer into the reflection, hoping to see her betrothed.

The girls were fortune-telling with a mirror at the crossroads - standing with their backs to the month, looking in the mirror and wishing: “Betrothed, mummer, show yourself to me in the mirror.” As some say, after a while the betrothed appears in the mirror.

Christmas fortune telling and carols in Chelyabinsk

One of the oldest fortune tellings at Christmas is on wax. To do this, you need to pour water into a transparent glass or deep plate and place a ring without a stone on the bottom, preferably taken from the fortuneteller’s finger. Melt the wax in a spoon over the candle flame with the words “burn-burn the candle, burn-burn the wax, tell me the name of your betrothed.” Then quickly pour the melted wax into the center of the ring into the water and carefully examine the shape of the frozen wax figure.

Street fortune telling

You can find out the name of your future husband on Christmas night in the following way. To do this, the girls went out into the street and asked the first man they met his name. As soon as he introduces himself, that’s what his betrothed will be called.

The following fortune telling will also help you find out the future - for this, on Christmas night, at midnight, you just need to step outside the threshold of your house. The first sounds you hear will predict your fate - the ringing of bells means you will be a happy bride.

Your betrothed is already in a hurry to come to you if you hear a cheerful male voice. If you hear a quarrel or just a conversation in a raised voice, your personal life is unlikely to work out this year.

Yuletide fortune telling

But with the shoe, street fortune telling at Christmas is the most famous. The girls threw their shoes over the fence and looked where the sock was pointing, accordingly the groom would come from there.

You could find out your future in marriage by grasping the fence with outstretched arms. If a girl grabbed an even number of stakes, this meant a happy married life. An odd number foreshadowed an unhappy marriage.

Other fortune telling

On Christmas Eve they also told fortunes using dreams. At night you had to eat herring or something salty, without drinking water. The groom will be the one who gives water in a dream.

The character of the future spouse could also be determined through fortune telling. Place a spoonful of honey, citric acid, salt and wine into four identical glasses of water.

Stir the contents of the glasses, place them on a tray and cover with a thick napkin and swirl the tray with your eyes closed so as not to know the contents of the glasses.

Then turn off the lights in the room, remove the napkin from the glasses and, having chosen one of them, take one sip from it. Your husband will have a great character if you come across a glass of honey. A glass with salt means that you and your husband will have to shed a lot of tears, with acid - a dull, boring life. A glass of wine indicates that your husband will drink too much.

The sex of the unborn child was guessed with a ring or a needle. They lowered the ring into a glass, pierced the woolen fabric with a needle, and then the object was suspended by a hair or thread and slowly lowered near the man’s hand. If the ring or needle began to make pendulum-like movements, a boy would be born, if circular, a girl would be born, and if the objects did not move, there would be no children.

A good omen on Christmas Eve is to see a shooting star, as it is believed that a wish made on the night before Christmas will come true. Therefore, on Christmas Eve you should definitely look at the sky.

Celebrating Christmas in dark colors is considered bad omen- on such a bright and cheerful holiday you cannot be sad. Spring will be early if there is a strong snowstorm on Christmas night.

People believed that next year you will have a rich harvest if you prepare holiday dishes and some of your food constantly falls out.

If you stumble on Christmas Eve, be careful you might get some bad news.

During all the holidays, the dreams you see will be prophetic, so try to remember them and correctly understand what fate predicts for you.

Happy Christmas! (traditions, signs, fortune telling)

Christmas is the brightest holiday!!! And although higher value Orthodox Christians devote inner peace and spiritual contemplation to the joy of the holiday rather than its external attributes, however Orthodox Christmas also imbued with its beautiful traditions.

According to references in the chronicles, Great Rus' first began to celebrate the Nativity of Christ in the 10th century. The holiday began in the evening, when Christmas Eve was quietly celebrated with family at a pre-holiday dinner by candlelight.

The table was always covered with a white tablecloth and twelve dishes were served, and people sat at the table in an even number. If there was an odd number of guests, then one free cutlery was set on the table. It was not customary to sit down at the table until the first star appeared in the sky.

It was believed that at this moment the star that once announced the birth of Christ to the wise men in Bethlehem would light up in the sky. Before sitting down to the table, it was sprinkled with hay - in memory of the den and manger in which Christ was born.
What to serve?

Since fasting ends on January 7, you should break your fast on a grand scale.
The Christmas table should certainly have an abundance of meat, fish, wine and sweets.
Traditional dishes for this holiday are jellied meat, dumplings, baked pig with horseradish, sauerkraut cabbage soup, pies with meat, rice or jam.
Before a gala dinner, they used to serve “fat kutya” - crumbly rice or wheat porridge with raisins and honey, sprinkled with melted butter.
Traditionally, edible gifts were given at Christmas: homemade sweets, jars of jams and pickles, and cakes are also suitable.
Inedible items include any toys and souvenirs, winter accessories like mittens or scarves and other small items.
Until the first star, sit in silence and think. Then you need to sit down at the table, have a drink and a snack and go outside in a good way - sing songs, play snowballs and go sledding. Fiery fun such as fireworks and fireworks and going around neighbors to invite them to have fun together are encouraged.

On the first day of Christmas - January 7, married children (with a daughter-in-law or son-in-law) were supposed to visit their parents after dinner, they said that they were bringing “dinner for grandfather.”

For a long time at Christmas they caroled and sang carols.

It is on the night before Christmas, according to popular belief, that two forces dominate: good and evil. Whichever person he joined, she worked miracles with him. One invited people to sing carols and glorify the birth of Christ for festive table, and the other was gathering witches for the Sabbath. In the evening, Kolyada (Kalita) - disguised guys in torn fur coats and with animal masks on their faces - went from house to house in the villages. They honored the owners without sparing generous words.

In every home, such guests were greeted with festive treats and gifts. The theme of the birth of Jesus Christ prevailed in the texts of the carols. Others were associated with biblical stories, still others praised the owner of the house and his household. In the old days, it was customary to wish for a prosperous harvest next year:

Tausen, tausen!
Give me a damn, give me some guts,
Pork leg -
A little bit of everything!
Carry it - don't shake it,
Come on - don't break it.

If the request was fulfilled, you should:

Christmas tree
From a good man
Rye is born good:
A spikelet of thick
The straw is empty!

If not:

From a stingy guy
Rye is born good:
The spikelet is empty,
It's thick like straw!

Christmas fortune-telling is common among young people. It is believed that it is on “holy” days that the future can be most accurately predicted. Therefore, girls take advantage of the moment and try to predict their fate.

Christmas fortune telling by barking dogs
At midnight, take a knife, go outside, go to a snowdrift and start cutting the snow with a knife, saying: “Damn, damn, don’t be silent, damn, damn, tell me what kind of husband I’ll get, will I have to laugh or cry?”
After pronouncing the words of the spell, shut up and listen carefully to the barking of the dogs. If an angry, abrupt bark is heard, it means future husband He will be strict and gloomy.
If the dogs bark cheerfully and loudly, then the husband will be cheerful and kind.
It is very bad if you hear a dog howling during fortune telling. This suggests that the marriage will not last long and very quickly the young wife will become a widow.

Christmas fortune telling with wax (candles)
Take wax or paraffin candles white(holiday colored candles are not suitable for fortune telling), place in a metal bowl, melt over a fire and immediately pour into a container with cold water. The figure formed in this case will predict the future that awaits the fortuneteller.

Fortune telling with wax and milk
Pour milk into a saucer and place it on the threshold. Take some cinders wax candles, put in a metal bowl and melt on the fire, saying: “Brownie, my master, come to the threshold to drink milk and eat wax.”
Having said the last word of the spell, pour the wax into the milk and carefully examine the resulting figure.

Interpretation of figures
