Circumstances of sending down

Ibn Hatim reports from Mujahid (as hadeeth mursal) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) spoke about a Mujahid (warrior on the path of religion) from among the children of Israel (banu Israil), who carried his weapons on his shoulders for a thousand months during which he never laid down his arms. The companions were amazed when they heard this. In connection with this event, this sura was sent down, where it is said that the worship on the Night of Predestination granted to this ummah exceeds a thousand months of jihad in which this warrior participated. According to another narration from Mujahid given by Ibn Jabir, a worshiper among the Banu Israil used to worship every night, and as soon as dawn came, he would arm himself and fight all day. This went on for a thousand months. Thus this Surah was sent down. It shows the superiority of the community of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and that the Night of Destiny is a special quality (dignity) of this ummah (Mazhari).

Meaning of the Night of Doom

One of the meanings of the word "frame" is greatness, honor or dignity. Zuhri and other scholars attributed this meaning to this night. This night is called the Night of Predestination, because it is a night of greatness, honor and dignity.

Abu Bakr Warraq claimed that this night is named in this way because a person can acquire these qualities (become a man of honor and dignity) as a result of repentance, asking for forgiveness and doing righteous deeds on this night, because before that he may have lacked honor and dignity, and he led an unrighteous life.

Another meaning of the word "frame" is predestination. According to this view, this night was so named because the fate of each person and entire nations, which was prescribed for them in eternity, is carried out through special angels responsible for universal planning. The lifespan of each person, his death, his livelihood, rains and other things are measured by these angels in order to be fulfilled within a year, from one month of Ramadan to another. If a person is predestined to perform Hajj in the coming year, it will be prescribed for him. According to Ibn Abbas, there are four angels responsible for such things: Israfil, Mikail, Israel and Jibril, peace be upon him.

This is clearly shown in the following verses (meaning):

“We sent it down on a blessed night, because We admonish people. On this night, every wise thing is decided (divided) through Our command. We are the senders (of prophets and messengers)" (44:3-5).

The name "Laylatun Mubarak" or "blessed one" refers, according to most Qur'anic scholars, to the Night of Destiny. The angels record and descend with what Allah has ordained and commanded for the coming year. Some scholars believed that the words "blessed night" in verse 44:3 refer to the 15th night of the month of Sha'ban, the so-called "Lailatul-Baraa", or "Night of inviolability (protection)". This view can be reconciled with the previous one, so that the initial divine decree is decided on the Night of Baraa, and the details are recorded and passed on to the appropriate angels on the Night of Decree. This is confirmed by the narration from Ibn Abbas, which Baghawi cites from Abud-Dukh, who stated that on the Night of Baraa Allah establishes by His command all the universal prescriptions, but they are transmitted to the corresponding angels only on the Night of Qadr (Mazhari).

Date Night of Doom

The Qur'an clearly states that this night falls on the blessed or auspicious month of Ramadan, but exact date not reported. As a consequence, her date has been a subject of debate among scholars. There are about forty opinions on this subject. Mazhari states that the strongest opinion is that the Night of Qadr falls on the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan, but the exact date has not been established. It can be any of the ten odd nights, which can change from year to year. According to a reliable tradition (Sunnah), this may be one of the following nights - 21, 23, 25, 27 and 29. Thus, all apparently contradictory traditions associated with odd nights are agreed. All hadiths (traditions) associated with the date of this night are authentic, so there is no need for complicated interpretation. Most prominent jurists such as Aba Kilyaba, Imam Malik, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Sufyan Thauri, Ishaq ibn Rahwai, Abu Thaur, Muzani, Ibn Khuzayma and others agree that this night falls on the last ten odd nights alternately. Imam Shafi'i had two opinions. On the one hand, he agreed with the majority, on the other hand, he believed that the date of this night is fixed and does not change (Ibn Kathir).

There is a transmission from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, recorded in Bukhari's Sahih, according to which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Seek the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan" (Mazhari).

The value and importance of this Night and the special duas of this Night

The greatest merit of this Night is mentioned in the sura itself, that is, the worship performed on this night is better than worship for a thousand months, which is eighty-three years and four months. AT this case this turnover, as elsewhere in the Qur'an, does not imply an exact number, but denotes some large number. Allah alone knows how much (it) is greater or better.

It was narrated by Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “Whoever spends the Night of Qadr in worship of Allah, all past sins will be forgiven.” Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “All the angels who are at the Lotus of the Ultimate Limit descend under the leadership of Jibril, peace be upon him, and greet every believer, male or woman, except those who drink wine and eat pork." In another hadith, it is reported that whoever loses the blessings of the Night Qadr, has lost everything good. On the Night of Destiny, some people feel a special light and bear witness to it.

However, it should be noted that such experiences or testimonies from one or more are not part of the blessings or rewards of this night. So people don't have to worry about it.

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, once asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) what duas she should recite if she caught that night. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, advised her to say the following dua:

(Allahumma innaka `afuvvun tuhibbul-`afwa fa`fu `anni)

“O Allah, indeed You are Forgiving, You love to forgive, so forgive me” (Qurtubi).

Sending down the Noble Quran

Meaning of the first verse:

(1) “Indeed, We sent it down (the Qur'an) on the Night of Destiny.”

From this verse it is clear that the Noble Qur'an was sent down on the Night of Qadr. It (this verse) can have two meanings: 1) the entire Qur'an was sent down this Night from the Preserved Tablet. Then Jibril, peace be upon him, transmitted it to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in parts as needed at different points in time for twenty-three years; 2) the first revelation, containing the opening verses of the 96th sura, occurred in the month of Ramadan, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, performed worship in the cave of Hira. The rest of the Qur'an was revealed gradually, as needed in different circumstances.

All heavenly books were sent down during Ramadan

Abu Dharr Ghifari, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “The scrolls of the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) were sent down on the 3rd of Ramadan, the Torah was sent down on the 6th of Ramadan, Injil was sent down on the 13th of Ramadan, Zabur was sent down on the 18th of Ramadan, and the Quran was sent down on the 24th of Ramadan” (Mazhari).

Descent of angels and spirit with the decisions of Allah

Meaning of the fourth verse:

"Angels and the spirit (angel Jibril) descend during it with the permission of the Lord for all commands."

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When the Night of Qadr comes, Jibril descends to earth with a great multitude of angels, and they all pray for every servant of Allah, male or a woman engaged in prayer or remembrance of Allah in order to receive the blessings of Allah ”(Mazhari).

In the phrase “min kulli amrin”, the preposition “min” is used in the meaning of the preposition “s” in the same way as in verse 13:11.

Therefore, the verse, according to the commentaries, would make sense that the angels descend throughout the night with commands as to what is to happen in the coming year. Some commentators such as Mujahid and others say that the phrase "min kulli amrin" is syntactically related to "salam" and the word "amr" means "all". Thus, they understand this phrase as follows: “This Night is safe from all evil and harm” (Ibn Kathir).

Meaning of the fifth verse:

"She is the world before dawn."

The word “salam” (peace) completes the full meaning of the sentence “this whole night is peace, tranquility and complete goodness, devoid of any evil” (Kurtubi).

Some scholars see the word salam as defining the sentence "min kulli amrin" - "angels descend with every thing that is peaceful and auspicious" (Mazhari).

The final part of the verse means that the blessings of this Night are not limited to any particular part of it. They begin to descend at the beginning of the night and continue until dawn.

Special Notes

The verse says: “The Night of Qadr is better than a thousand months.” Every thousand months equals eighty-three years and four months. Obviously, each year includes Laylatul Qadr, which is better than a thousand months.

As a result, the Night of Destiny will return to infinity, that is, it will be repeated without end. For this reason, some commentators say that the expression "more than a thousand months" does not include the Nights of Destiny. Thus, this is not a problem (Ibn Kathir referring to Mujahid).

Due to geographic location different countries, the time of this night varies in different places. As a result, the Night of Destiny does not occur everywhere at the same time. This is not a problem, as people in every locality must calculate this night, and spend it in worship, and receive its blessings according to their geographical location.

Allah, Most Pure and Great, knows best.

If a person performs the night and morning prayers in Jamaat, he will receive the blessings and reward of the Night Qadr. The more worship he performs at night, the more he will receive the grace of this night. Sahih Muslim says that our master Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “If a person performs night (isha) prayer in jamaat, he will receive so many blessings as if he had spent half the night in worship. And if he performs the morning (fajr) prayer in the jamaat, he will receive blessings [as if] for the whole night spent in worship.

End of Commentary on Surah Al-Qadr

Mufti Muhammad Shafi Usmani

The angels descend [to the limits of the planet Earth] on this night and ar-ruh[angel Jabrail (Gabriel)] by permission of their Lord, in every case. Peace (in every business on this night [establishes] peace, tranquility). It [this night lasts] until dawn.

In the month of fasting, there is one majestic night - Laylatul-kadr, when the worship of the Lord, like any good deeds, even the most mundane, everyday ones, are more significant in terms of Divine retribution than those that have been performed for a thousand months.

The fact that the last Scripture - the Holy Quran - was brought down from the Preserved Tablet to the first heavenly level of the seven existing on this very night speaks of its indescribable majesty and specialness before the Almighty Creator.

The repetition of "Laylatul-qadr" three times is not accidental. This technique in Arabic indicates respect and significance.

"Laylatul-frame" means "night of power". Scientists have made various suggestions as to why this time period is named that way. Here is some of them:

- “its power and majesty lies in the fact that the Holy Quran was revealed on this very night”;

- “for the reason that an incredibly huge number of angels descends to earth this night”;

- “the manifestation of grace, mercy and forgiveness by the Lord of the worlds on this night is incomparable with that on other nights in its significance”;

- "A believer who spends this night in prayer acquires, by the grace of the Almighty, an unusually large amount of strength and vitality."

The word "al-qadr" can also be translated as "tightness". Given this meaning, theologians said: “On this night, such a huge number of angels descend on the earth that it becomes simply “crowded” for them.

Another translation is "limitation". The interpretation from here is as follows: awareness and knowledge about which of the nights of the next month of Ramadan will be exactly Laylatul-qadr are limited by the Almighty. The Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) gives only approximate guidelines.

Sometimes "Laylatul-qadr" is interpreted as "Night of Predestination" This is the case if the word "frame" is read as "kadar". Given this interpretation, Islamic scholars supposedly explained: “How this night will be spent by the prayer and with what prayers (heartfelt attitude) he will turn to God, can significantly affect the next year of life. this person, going in parallel and unity with the original all-awareness of the Creator.

“Laylatul-kadr is better than a thousand months!”- when in these months and among many thousands of days there is no this night in them, there is no Lailatul-qadr.

The ayat makes it clear in plain text that doing any good deed on this blessed night is more rewarding before God than doing the same good deed or action, even saying good word, for a thousand months. This is a manifestation of the Creator's greatest mercy to people who often forget about Him, forget about eternity and about themselves.

"Angels Descend Tonight"- as they descend from heaven to earth, so they become closer to believers.

"... And ar-ruh [angel Jabrail (Gabriel)]". The Almighty, first speaking about all the angels, and then highlighting one from this huge number with a separate mention, pointed to the special position of the angel Jabrail (Archangel Gabriel) before Himself.

"In every case"- that is, the angels descend both to bring down and fulfill the commandments of the Most High, and in order to establish, affirm all those things that should happen in the next year.

"It [this night lasts] until dawn" - Laylatul-frame begins immediately after sunset and ends at dawn, that is, with the beginning of time morning prayer Fajr.

By the Grace of the Almighty, tafsir of the ninety-seventh chapter Holy Quran came to an end.

Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and his family, said: “The one who reads the sura "Al-Qadr" will be rewarded as the one who diligently fasted during the entire month of Ramadan and spent the entire Night of Destiny in vigils. According to another tradition, the Prophet dreamed that the Umayyads were trying to climb his minbar. The dream did not please the Prophet and made him feel uneasy. And then, as if in consolation, Surah Al-Qadr was revealed to him.

  1. Imam Baqir, may peace be upon him, was once asked which of the nights is the Night of Destiny, and he answered like this: “How can we not know this when angels surround us on this night?” (Bahrani, Al-Burkhan, vol. 4, p. 488). In a tradition from Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, it says: “The appointment of fate takes place on the Night of Predestination on the 19th, the confirmation of the assigned inheritance on the night of the 21st, and the signing on the night of the 23rd” (Khuvayzi, "Nur as-sakalayn", vol. 5, p. 626).
  2. It is said that a certain person approached Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, and asked if the word means "Rukh"(“Spirit”) is the same as Jabrail, to which he replied: “Jabrail is only one of the angels, while roc stands above the angels. Has not Allah Almighty said: "Angels and the Spirit are sent down"(97:4)?” (Bahrani, Al-Burkhan, vol. 4, p. 481).
  3. The legend tells that once Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said to Ali ibn Abu Hamza Sumali: “On the Night of Predestination on the 21st and 23rd, strive for grace. In each of them, try to perform one hundred rak'ahs of prayer and, if possible, keep awake during both nights until dawn, and then perform the ritual of ablution. Abu Hamza asked the Imam what he should do if he could not perform so many prayers while standing. “Pray while sitting,” the Imam replied to him. Then Abu Hamza asked what he should do if he could not do even that. “Pray in bed,” the Imam replied, “and it doesn’t matter if you get some sleep at the beginning of the night, and only then you start praying, because in Ramadan the gates of heaven are wide open, the devil is chained, and the deeds of believers are accepted by the Lord. Oh, how glorious is the month of Ramadan! (Khuvayzi, "Nur as-sakalayn", vol. 5, p. 626).

Traditions about the virtues of Surah Al-Qadr (The Night of Destiny)

1. Saif ibn Amir narrated from a man who narrated from Imam Baqir, peace be upon him: “Whoever reads the sura with a loud voice “Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Destiny…”(97:1), he is like a warrior who draws his sword in the way of the Great and Almighty Allah. And whoever reads it quietly is like a warrior who chokes on his own blood in the path of Allah. And whoever recites it ten times, Allah will erase a thousand of his sins.”

2. Hussein ibn Abu Ala narrated the words of Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him: “Whoever reads a surah in prayer from the obligatory prayers of Allah “Indeed, We have sent him down…”(97:1), the caller will appeal to him: “O servant of Allah, Allah has forgiven you the past - start the deeds anew!”
