In fact, crying during prayer and contemplative practices, when the grace of God begins to work with a person’s soul, is a completely natural and even desirable process.

A clear explanation for tears during prayer and contemplation is given by Christian holy fathers. They teach that there are several varieties of tears.

1. Lamentation for God (penitential lamentation). Such weeping occurs when the heart is cleansed of sins and acquires spiritual sensitivity, getting rid of bitterness and petrification. Tears of repentance are a cure for a sick soul. They flow from a penitent and contrite heart, and this process is often subconscious, a person cannot control or hold back his tears - it is controlled by the Holy Spirit in him. When a person knows that crying is good, this is a certain indicator of some spirituality, then he can either “squeeze” tears out of himself, or, after crying, exalt himself over others (I cried, but you didn’t, which means I’m higher than you, I have a gift , I have reached, etc.).
