Preface, grammatical analysis and literal translation from my new textbook Classical Tibetan.
Guru Rinpoche (Precious Teacher), also known as Padmasambhava (Lotus-Born; in Tibetan པདྨ་འབྱུང་གནས།) is one of the most revered Tibetan mentors. His personality and teachings are especially important in the Nyingma school, where he is revered as the Second Buddha.
According to Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche, a preceptor from the land of Oddiyana (in Tibetan ཨུ་རྒྱན། or ཨོ་རྒྱན།) in the 8th c. brought to Tibet the teachings of the Vajrayana, the Buddhist Tantra. In his preaching of the Teachings, Guru Padmasambhava used his miraculous abilities, bestowing blessings on living beings and getting rid of obstacles and obstacles. Guru Rinpoche had many Tibetan disciples, but not all teachings at that time could find worthy followers; moreover, Padmasambhava foresaw the possibility of distortion of the Teaching. Therefore, according to tradition, Guru Rinpoche left in many places in Tibet secret treasures terma (in Tibetan གཏེར་མ།) - texts of deep instructions and sacred objects. One of the most outstanding Terton was the great Terton Urgien Chogyur Dean Lingpa (in Tibetan, གཏེར་ ཆེན་ ཨོ་ མཆོག་ གྱུར་ བདེ་ གླིང་ པ ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། ། །; years of life 1829-1870 according to European chronology). Among the many terma texts he acquired was Guru Rinpoche's prayer for the removal of obstacles, which we will read and study in this lesson.
དུས་གསུམ་སངས་རྒྱས་གུ་རུ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ༔ དངོས་གྲུབ་ཀུན་བདག་བདེ་བ་ཆེན་པོའི་ཞབས༔ བར་ཆད་ཀུན་སེལ་བདུད་འདུལ་དྲག་པོ་རྩལ༔ གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ༔ ཕྱི་ནང་གསང་བའི་བར་ཆད་ཞི་བ་དང༌༔ བསམ་པ་ལྷུན་གྱིས་འགྲུབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས༔
Second line: དངོས་གྲུབ་ཀུན་བདག་བདེ་བ་ཆེན་པོའི་ཞབས༔ དངོ༾ - achievement, perfection; siddhi (the ability to perform miracles); ཀུན། - everything, everything; དངོས་གྲུབ་ཀུན། – all siddhis, all perfections; བདག - here: short for བདག་པོ། "lord, master, possessor"; དངོས་གྲུབ་ཀུན་བདག - Possessor of all Siddhis / Perfections; in a prose text it would be དངོས་གྲུབ་ཀུན་གྱི་བདག་པོ།, however, in a verse text DRELDRA (here གྱི།) and nominal particle (here པ།;) are often omitted; བདེ་བ། - bliss, happiness; ཆེན་པོ། - big, great བདེ་བ་ཆེན་པོ། – Great Bliss (that is, Enlightenment); ཞབས། - foot (respectfully), base; Venerable (after the name of the mentor); བདེ་བ་ཆེན་པོའི་ཞབས། - Foundation of Great Bliss. Translation of the second line: "Possessor of all Siddhis, Foundation of Great Bliss."
Third line: བར་ཆད་ཀུན་སེལ་བདུད་འདུལ་དྲག་པོ་རྩལ༔ བར་ཆད་ཆད་ཌྷ - an obstacle; ཀུན། - everything, everything; བར་ཆད་ཀུན། - all obstacles; སེལ། - overcoming, removing, cleansing; here is an abbreviation for སེལ་བ། (the པ།/བ། form of the verb སེལ། བསལ། བསལ། སོལ། "to overcome, remove, purify"), in poetic texts the particle པ།/བ། the nominal form is often omitted; བར་ཆད་ཀུན་སེལ། – Removing all obstacles; in a prose text it would be བར་ཆད་ཀུན་སེལ་བ།, in a verse text the particle བ། omitted; བདུད། - Mara (demon-tempter, the embodiment of samsara); demon; འདུལ། - conquering, pacifying; educator, obedient; here is an abbreviation for འདུལ་བ། (the པ།/བ། form of the verb འདུལ། བཏུལ། གཏུལ། ཐུལ། "conquer, remove, purify"), in poetic texts the particle པ།/བ། the nominal form is often omitted; བདུད་འདུལ། - Conqueror of Mary; short for བདུད་འདུལ་བ།, particle བ། omitted; དྲག་པོ། - angry, powerful, harsh, intimidating; རྩལ། - powerful, skillful; abbreviation for རྩལ་ལྡན།, in the poetic text particle ལྡན། omitted; བདུད་འདུལ་དྲག་པོ་རྩལ། – Wrathful and Mighty Conqueror of Mara / demons. Translation of the third line: "Removing all obstacles, Wrathful and Mighty Conqueror of Mara."
Fourth line: གསོལ་ བ་ འདེབས་ བྱིན་ གྱིས་ བརླབ་ ཏུ་ གསོལ གསོལ་ བ་ འདེབས ། - send a request, make a prayer, ask, pray (see the text of lesson 9); གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ། - I appeal / appeal with a prayer (སོ། - the final particle of a declarative sentence); བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ། – bless (verb བརླབ། in the form OBV; see lesson 9); གསོལ། - ask, beg (=); བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ། - I ask / ask to bless (the subordinating particle ཏུ། serves to connect verbs, which will be discussed in one of the following lessons; the final particle of the declarative sentence ལོ། is omitted in the verses. Translation of the fourth line: “I am asking you to bless.”
Fifth line: ཕྱི་ནང་གསང་བའི་བར་ཆད་ཞི་བ་དང༌༔ ཕྱི། – external; ནང་། – internal; གསང་བ། - secret; ཕྱི་ནང་གསང་བ། - external, internal and secret; བར་ཆད། - an obstacle; ཕྱི་ནང་གསང་བའི་བར་ཆད། – external, internal and secret obstacles; ཞི་བ། – form in པ།/བ། verb ཞི། "calm down, pacify, pacify" (=); ཕྱི་ནང་གསང་བའི་བར་ཆད་ཞི་བ། - subdue external, internal and secret obstacles / subdue external, internal and secret obstacles; དང༌། – and (connects the fifth and sixth lines). Translation of the fifth line: "Removal ("pacification") of external, internal and secret obstacles.
Sixth line: - thought, desire; ལྷུན་གྱིས། - spontaneously, naturally (the particle JEDRA གྱིས། indicates the mode of action); འགྲུབ་པ། – form in པ།/བ། verb འགྲུབ། གྲུབ། འགྲུབ། “to be carried out, to be fulfilled, to exist”; བསམ་པ་ལྷུན་གྱིས་འགྲུབ་པ། - spontaneous fulfillment of desires; བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། – bless (verb རློབས། in the form of OPN, see lesson 9); བསམ་པ་ལྷུན་གྱིས་འགྲུབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། – bless for the spontaneous fulfillment of desires / bless for wishes to be spontaneously fulfilled (the subordinating particle ་་་ར།, as mentioned in this lesson, serves to link verbs; more on this will be discussed in one of the following lessons). Translation of the sixth line: "Bless for the spontaneous fulfillment of desires." Translation of the fifth and sixth lines together: "Bless for the removal of external, internal and secret obstacles and the spontaneous fulfillment of desires."
Translation of the prayer as a whole: (O) Buddha of the Three Times Guru Rinpoche, Possessor of all Siddhis, Foundation of Great Bliss, Remover of all obstacles, Wrathful and Mighty Conqueror of Mara! I am praying for your blessing. Bless for the elimination of external, internal and secret obstacles And the spontaneous fulfillment of desires!
