Biography

early years

Loki was not an Asgardian himself, but was the son of Laufey, the deceased ruler of the Frost Giants, ancient enemies of Asgard. Many years ago, when Bor, the ruler of Asgard, was fighting the Giants, he pursued an injured giant, which led him to a powerful wizard (this was Loki in disguise from our time). He knew that he could not surpass Bor in brute strength, so, taking him by surprise, the sorcerer turned him into snow. Bor's son, Odin, arrived just as the sorcerer had disappeared. Bor begged Odin to find him.

Years passed without Odin trying to save his father by ruling Asgard in his place and following his own dreams. At first, Bor tried to convince Odin to release him, and finally, Bor promised Odin that he would not bother him anymore if he took the son of the fallen king and raised him as his own. Less than a week later, Odin himself led the Asgardians in battle against the Frost Giants and killed Laufey, who was king, in a personal battle. After killing Laufey, Odin found a small child hidden inside the Giant's main fortress. The child was Loki, and Laufey hid him from his subjects because he was afraid of being ridiculed (Loki was too small for the child of the Snow Giant). One took the child, because his father wanted it so and because this child was the son of a worthy opponent. He raised him as his own son, along with his own child, Thor, which set in motion the events of his own demise. What Odin never realized was that Bor, who tortured him from his grave, was actually an illusion created by Loki.

Childhood

Loki, unlike Thor, proved to be a mischievous child and was often jealous of the affection Odin showed his brother Thor. Sometime as a child, Loki began studying Asgardian magic and science, both of which he excelled at, eventually becoming one of the most powerful mages in the dimension.

Loki is well known for cutting off the long, golden hair of Thor's lover, Syf. Thor forced Loki to restore them. Loki later used two dwarves to cut off Sif's hair, but when he refused to pay, they made new, black hair out of nothing.

As a teenager, Loki was still trying to gain an advantage over Thor. Odin sent Thor, Balder, and Sif to get materials for the sword. Loki secretly followed them, but when the evil goddess was ready to attack them, he was forced to warn the group.

Meanwhile, Odin, who loved Thor so much, was preparing the greatest gift for him. When Thor was eight, his father introduced him to the magical hammer, Mjolnir. Loki was jealous of Thor and then already showed the first signs of evil. It was because of Loki that the handle of the hammer was made too short (he intervened during the creation of Mjolnir). As a boy, Loki wanted the power of Mjolnir, which would one day belong to Thor, and often tried to steal the hammer.

All this had an effect on Loki. He became bad faster and faster - until he became a real villain. His hatred of Thor and desire to rule Asgard manifested itself along with his sorcery and "leprosy". As a result, he made a vow - to become the most powerful god in Asgard and destroy his brother Thor.

Loki before the Avengers

Loki is best known for fighting Thor and other heroes in the Marvel Universe. In particular with the Avengers (Avengers), although he fought with many others. However, in the first place, Loki was the enemy of Thor.

Thor and Loki grew up together and Thor received the throne of Asgard. Loki has become a public enemy. He often tried to get the throne of Asgard and committed numerous crimes. As a result, his crimes grew so much that Odin himself was forced to take extreme measures. He imprisoned Loki inside a tree as punishment for his deeds. However, Loki, using magic, managed to get out.

Dissatisfied, he wandered aimlessly until he found Eldred, the sorcerer. He was incredibly skilled in the use of magic, especially black magic. Eldred taught Loki everything he knew. The latter left his teacher and found a new one, capable of increasing his strength to unthinkable limits - Surtur, a fiery demon. He possessed power beyond power and was especially fond of souls. Then Loki used Eldred's soul. Thus, he obtained all his power, his servants and property.

Loki did many such things. He further advanced in the study of black magic and received the title of "god of evil" among the Asgardians. He also met many of the worst creatures of Asgard with whom he forged alliances. Angerboda was an evil goddess who became Loki's wife. Their children were the Midgard Serpent, the Fenris Wolf, and Hela (she would become the goddess of death and Thor's enemy). Loki also married Sygin, making her believe with magic that he was her husband, Theoric.

In addition, an important event occurred - Loki learned about the prophecy - Ragnarok (Ragnarok). It was predicted that Loki would lead to the ruin of Asgard. He will lead the enemies of Asgard in a war against him, kill Balder and destroy Asgard. Loki liked this "idea" and accepted his fate. He often tried to destroy Asgard and bring about Ragnarok, but was stopped by Odin. However, Loki's plans were so complicated that no one could claim that he was behind it.

Meanwhile, his brother Thor became arrogant. The worship of Midgard, flattery in Asgard while he was their king, made him proud and self-confident. Once, during a battle with the Snow Giants, Thor ended up on their territory. It almost led to war. Odin was so angry that he decided to punish Thor. He created a mortal body for him, Donald Blake, removed all of Thor's memories and powers, and imprisoned him inside Blake's body.

Creation of the Avengers

Donald Blake was a happy ordinary doctor. He was caring and loving; he had a family. Then the Kronans came to Earth. Fleeing from them, Blake ended up in the cave where Thor was born. There he found an ordinary wooden cane, which turned into Mjolnir. At this point, Donald turned into Thor and regained his memories. This meant that he could turn into Thor and back into Blake at any moment, so Thor was back on Earth, which Loki found out. Naturally this was big news for the evil god - his long-lost, worst older brother was free and begged for it. Loki used powerful magic to free himself from his prison and went to the island. There Loki made his first, most significant appearance.

Loki went to Earth and found there an incredible source of destruction, equal in strength to Thor - the Hulk. He used physical abilities to slow the Hulk down, making him believe that the dynamite was lying on the train tracks. The Hulk destroyed the train trestle to stop the "dynamite" and held the tracks on his shoulders to help the train pass. However, the driver saw only the Hulk and naturally came to the conclusion that he was furious. The driver sent a distress signal. Loki intercepted him and made it so that only Donald Blake, who instantly turned into Thor, heard this message. Iron Man (Iron Man), Ant-Man (Ant Man) and Wasp (Wasp) also picked up the signal.

Ant-Man used his ant web to find the Hulk. He was captured and worked in the circus as a strong man. Ant-Man quickly found him and had the ants imprison the Hulk underground. Tom managed to free himself and was met by Iron Man. The latter, along with Ant-Man, joined forces against the Hulk, but were never able to defeat him, and the Hulk fled into the desert.

Meanwhile, Thor realized that Loki was behind it all. He received permission from Odin and went to the Asgardian island where his brother was hiding. Loki created many traps and other difficulties on the way of Thor, but for the God of Thunder (God of Thunder) it turned out to be nothing. At last they met, for the first time in centuries. Loki created spells that Thor fought and was able to destroy. However, even after that, his brother had a trick up his sleeve. He made a deal with the trolls who lived underground. He will deliver the most powerful god to them if they "get" him for themselves. Therefore, the trolls dragged Thor underground, but he used Mjolnir to illuminate everything with a bright light. Underground creatures are blind. Thor then defeated Loki, captured him, and traveled with him to Earth.

Meanwhile, the Hulk and Iron Man fought furiously in the factory. While they were fighting, Thor showed up along with Loki. He explained that it was actually Loki's tricks. The Hulk attacked Loki, but he began to radiate some kind of energy. While he was trying to destroy Thor, he fell through a hatch and ended up in a lead tank. Five heroes began to celebrate the victory and decided to form a team. Wasp suggested the name "Avengers". Thus, the Avengers were created entirely thanks to Loki.

The Avengers would later become Loki's second greatest enemy, right after Thor. They would also become the Earth's Greatest Heroes, and Loki's attack inadvertently led to the creation of this powerful team.

Battles and Usurpations

Loki often fought Thor, either by himself or using pawns, in the period after the formation of the Avengers. Loki's actions were aimed at creating many powerful villains that opposed Thor, the Avengers and other heroes. Among his "pawns" were Absorbing Man, Destroyer, Cobra, Enchantress and Executioner, Lava Men, Super-Scrull, Mister Hyde, Weather-maker and Surtur. These villains fought Thor and the Avengers and were extremely successful. In particular, the Enchantress and the Executioner have been among the most dangerous enemies of the Avengers for a long time.

In addition, Loki was planning another grand attack in an attempt to reach his ultimate goal. Odin ruled Asgard and was so powerful that Loki would never be able to confront him openly, although the rest believed that he tried. But Odin had to rest during Odinsleep for a while to regain his strength. Loki tried to claim the throne of Asgard while Odin's guards were disabled. He succeeded and gained control of Asgard. True, he ran into one problem. Asgard had several powerful enemies that were very dangerous. It took a lot of skill and will, and Loki realized that this was more difficult than it looked at first glance. Mangog and Surtur, who were very angry with the God of Mischief, caused a lot of trouble and scared Loki so much that he gave up the throne.

Loki also made several other attempts to destroy his old enemies and get his hands on the power. He teamed up with Dormammu, the insane and powerful ruler of the Dark Dimension, to get the Evil Eye. It was a mystical powerful item that would give him power beyond his wildest fantasies (like Red Skull and Cosmic Cube). Ironically, Loki was tricked by the Avengers and another team, the Defenders. However, unlike the Red Skull and Cube, Loki lost. He also launched a direct attack on Midgard, but was stopped by Thor and a team of other heroes who saved the Earth from Loki and the Asgardian army.

Ultimately, Loki stole the throne of Asgard again and was defeated. Now Odin was really angry. He stripped Loki of his memories, created a vagrant body for him, and placed his consciousness there, sending Loki to Earth. Loki lived for some time in this guise until he was rescued by a journalist named Harris Hobbs. The latter made it to Asgard, but Thor erased his memories of it. The dream of restoring his memories somehow reached Loki and restored his memory. Enraged, he was able to summon Ragnarök by killing Baldur with an arrow, but the latter was revived.

Also, Loki gave the mortal the same powers that Thor had, so that he could be his assistant. The mortal was Red Norvell. For this, Loki was punished, he blamed Odin for everything and was again expelled.

Once Hela cursed Thor. He will be immortal, but he will not be able to heal his wounds. Loki found out about this and was pleased with Hela, who "killed" Thor much more effectively than Loki himself could ever do. He sent the Destroyer, an army of Frost Giants, and the dreaded Midgard Serpent. Thor was beaten to such an extent that he was reduced to a pile of crushed bones and crumpled organs, but he was still alive. Mentally, he took control of the Destroyer, found Hela, beat her, and forced her to break the curse. As punishment, Thor cut off Loki's hand.

Once Seth and the Demons of Death attacked Asgard. In a terrible war, Set managed to capture Odin and imprison him inside the source of Set's powers - the magical Black Pyramid. Loki and Thor teamed up and saved Odin, who unleashed all his rage towards Set. It was one of several times the brothers worked together. On another occasion, Loki came up with an elaborate plan by which he intended to rule the Earth and destroy the Avengers. He brought together the Red Skull, Magneto, Doctor Doom, the Wizard, and the Mandarin and offered them the chance to control the heroes in battle to destroy them. But in reality, Loki controlled all of these villains by making them think they were the leader, being the God of Mischief. However, Thor found out about this and “knocked out” everything bad from his brother. In retaliation, Loki created the Tri-Sentinel, but he was destroyed by Spider-Man, who temporarily became the Captain of the Universe.

Evil Conspiracy

Loki created a new evil plan, and compared to his appearance in the first issue of the Avengers, he was even more complicated. Most notably, Loki appears here as a businessman captured by Mephisto, fighting Thor and Eric Masterson, and wielding none other than the War Machine.

First, Loki assumed the guise of a Midgard businessman and found Ulik, the troll, Amora the Enhantress, and the Wrecking Crew. Loki ordered them to capture Kevin Masterson, Eric's son. Eric was connected to Thor in his body. Thor was angry with Loki, and even in human form was able to free Kevin. As soon as he was running, Loki fired an energy blast at Kevin's mother, Marcy, just to act like an idiot.

But the Enchantress secretly turned against Loki. She took control of the body of another mortal, Susan Austin, Kevin's nanny. While in Austin's body, the Enchantress took the blow, leaving her body a second before it. This attack really pissed off Thor - Loki killed innocent people for no reason, just to piss Thor off. The fury of the Thunder God really "fell" on Loki. Thor drained Loki's life force with Mjolnir. Turns out it killed Loki. For this, Thor was exiled to Eric's subconscious. Eric himself became the new Thor, although he took the name Thunderstrike. He had a personal comic book series, though a small one, in the nineties.

Meanwhile, Loki gained control of Odin's body while he was in Odin's Dream. He opened the new kind of amazing strength, then took control of Asgard. He was busy making a decision. Odin's spirit floated down to Mephisto's Realm, which was a pretty good "catch" for her new owner, Mephisto. The souls of the innocent were beautiful, but the soul of the King of the Gods was even better. Luckily, Thunderbolt and Sif snuck into Mephisto's Realm and freed Odin's spirit, returning him to his body. Mephisto just took Loki. The latter made a deal with Pluto, the god of hell. Loki will try to defeat Hercules if Pluto tries to do it with Thor. Mephisto was busy at the time and didn't pay attention to Loki, which was very bad, even though he had his soul.

Loki tried to get the Titan to attack Hercules, but to no avail. So he made the Flame attack Thor. Instead, he nearly harmed Sygin, and Loki ended up being forced to save Thor from his own henchman. Loki was still imprisoned in the Realm of Mephisto, from where he was rescued by Thor to help him fight the New Immortals bound in a set of armor - his body was no more. After that, Loki continued to attack Thor and Thunderbolt. He even had a War Machine at his disposal, having received a new body from Seth at the end.

But then War Machine, new person Ant (Scott Lang) and She-Hulk (She-Hulk) teamed up against him, reminding him of the Avengers - and he had even more problems with them, so he stopped the fight.

Infinity Stones

After some time fighting Thor, Loki came up with a plan to seize absolute power - the Infinity Gems. It was a collection of seven powerful stones. If someone managed to collect them together, then they gave their owner omnipotence. Thanos and the Red Skull attempted to do so, but failed (although the Skull later obtained the Cosmic Cube).

Loki discovered that the Stones were "floating" in an alternate dimension, the Ultraverse. He went there to get the Stones. They already belonged to the Ultras, a race of ultra powerful superhumans native to the Ultraverse. Each of them had a Stone, and each was incredibly strong. Loki met with each of them and easily destroyed, one by one. None of them could resist the God of Harm. After killing each of the Ultras, Loki took the Stone.

He got six of them, but then realized something was missing. Loki did not understand the true meaning of the Stones and did not know that a seventh was needed. He spent a lot of time searching until one of the Elders of the Universe - the Grandmaster - told him that another Stone was needed - Ego (Ego). Loki, the Avengers and Ultraforce (the heroes of that dimension) all fought for this Stone.

However, Loki was unable to defeat both teams and ended up losing all of the Stones - his closest opportunity to gain omnipotence. Humiliated, he returned to his native dimension and was angry.

Ragnarok

Meanwhile, Loki kept trying to start Ragnarok. Throughout this time, he carried out various actions to set the plan and destroy Asgard. However, thanks to the efforts of Thor and Odin, he kept treading water.

After failing with the Infinity Stones, Loki began to try harder and Odin sensed that Ragnarok was close. To prolong their lives, Odin tricked Yggdrasil, the World Tree, into thinking that Ragnarok had already happened. All Asgardians were stripped of their memories and personalities, in return they received mortal personalities and were sent to Midgard. Loki became an Eastern businessman named Tso Zhung, and Thor became Jake Olson, a paramedic. Red Norvell found all the gods and brought them together, giving them their personalities. Loki regained his identity and fought Set, who was trying to destroy all Asgardians. In the end, they all got theirs back.

However, the real Jake Olson was killed and Thor used his name and appearance as a secret person. Loki resurrected a dead body and used it to commit crimes so that Thor would be arrested, but he imprisoned Loki in a body that looked like Jake Olson. Loki was sent to prison.

Luckily for him, Loki was released from prison just as Surtur managed to kill Odin. Thor ascended the throne and everything worked out for Loki's benefit - he gained more power and saw Thor put pieces of Asgardian culture on Earth. But he was still angry and still believed in his destiny. In Ragnarok.

Loki forged another Uru hammer similar to Mjolnir that he could use for himself. He started another plan to try and start Ragnarok and destroy Asgard. Thor stopped him, as he always did before. But he realized that the greatest possible honor in Asgard is to die a warrior. Asgard was in a loop, Loki attacked, Thor saved; death, rebirth. Thor accepted the fate in which Loki destroyed Asgard and started Ragnarok - and he could make everyone in Asgard die a warrior's death.

But first he had to get his own death because if he let the whole dimension die, he could also take revenge on his greatest enemy who had tormented him for so long. With a smooth blow of Mjolnir, Thor "knocked out" Loki's head. Of course, he was an amazingly powerful sorcerer, and the decapitation didn't kill him. His head was still "living", so Thor took it with him when he went to Asgard. Surtur was ready to unleash a massive army to destroy Asgard unless Thor stopped him. He allowed the demon to launch the attack, and Asgard was destroyed. But before Thor died, he faced the Those Who Sit Above in Shadow. Their forces were responsible for Ragnarok and Thor destroyed them. Then Asgard died, and Thor with him.

As for Loki, what could he do? Thor beheaded him. All he could do was sit and watch his final goal– Ragnarok – was held and then screamed as he was defeated in the attack. The last act of Loki's sad and disturbing life, to say the least.

But even if his last act was to scream, since his greatest plan killed him, Loki was still the greatest threat to Thor and Asgard and even in death, in the end - Loki won.

rebirth

Like all "dead" Asgardians, Loki was resurrected in human form and imprisoned by Baldur to prevent Thor from rebuilding Asgard. However, fate hid a little surprise - Loki was reborn in the body of a woman, and not just a woman, but in the body of Sif, Thor's true love. Loki apparently dedicated himself to helping his brother and former enemy in his quest to rebuild Asgard, but knowing Loki, he no doubt had a plan that would allow him to destroy his brother once again. Due to Loki's latest actions, Lady Sif was the last Ace imprisoned in human body, and Baldr discovered that he was Odin's true son, not an adopted one. Baldr later became the Prince of Asgard. Unlike Loki's life when he was a man, the goddess seemed to use hidden truths rather than lies to spin her sinister webs.

Loki came to Hela to ask for a favor. She wanted to be a man again while she was on a mission. Then Hela turned her into a man, and Loki showed that the body he used belonged to Sif. Loki was sent back to the time when the Asgardians were fighting the Frost Giants. He was attacked and killed one of the Giants. Their leader felt their blood coursing through Loki's veins and knew he was one of them. Bor chased the Giant and there he ran into a sorcerer. That sorcerer killed him; it was Loki. He said goodbye to Bor and turned him into snow. Loki then influenced himself, who was here as a child, to take revenge on his real father and become tougher. Loki's father was killed by Odin and young Loki appeared on the scene. He attacked Odin, but was stopped and taken in by Odin, who adopted him. After they left, the current Loki appeared and gladly stabbed his father with his sword. He returned to Hela and asked her to turn him back into Sif.

Dark Dominion

Loki joined Norman Osborn's Secret Cabal. For their cooperation and services, Osborne will give them the resources to achieve their goals. Loki wanted Asgard, back to heaven, where he should be.

Loki continued with her plan to take Asgard, resurrecting Bor and twisting his vision so that the world around him appeared deformed and grotesque. Not knowing who they were fighting against, Thor and Bor fought each other until Bor fell under the power of Thor's hammer. Baldr and Loki then appeared and informed Thor that he had just killed his grandfather. Loki then reminded Baldur that he must adhere to the laws of Asgard, so Thor must be punished in full for killing a member of the royal family. As the Prince of Asgard, Baldr was forced to banish Thor from Asgard forever. Speaking to some Asgardians in a pub, Loki told them that there was another place where Asgard could be, and that was Latveria, where Victor Von Doom ruled.

Loki planned to move Asgard to Latveria since Thor couldn't change anything now. Loki and Baldur met with Doctor Doom at his castle to discuss their problem. While Doom's servants were serving the Asgardians, Balder, still distrustful of Loki and Doom, asked the latter why his servants looked malnourished. They then discussed moving Asgardians to Latveria. Finally, it was decided that all Asgardians who wanted to move to Latveria would have to go through a portal created by Loki. Some Aesir remained, but most followed Loki and Balder to Latveria.

Loki and Doom met in the Aesir's new home, Latveria. Now Loki has returned to his male form again, as Thor was able to separate Sif from the body of an old, dying woman. Loki told Doom that the Asgardians love Latveria as a world similar to Asgard in terms of setting, weather and government. Loki added that everyone else was happy; then Doom asked if Loki was happy. He replied with a grin that his happiness was just beginning.

Doctor Doom and Loki were still discussing their plans. Doom gave Loki a small army of Doombots to help kill his target, which was Donald Blake. Loki then prepared his gift for Doom. He was talking to an Ace named Endrik. He showed Loki his sword and said that he plans to give it to his son, despite the fact that he not only had a son, he didn’t even have a beloved woman at that time. Loki told Endrik to go with him and cast a spell, causing Endrik to fall into a deep sleep.

At that time, Bill was walking to talk to Balder and on his way to him he heard a scream. He looked at what happened in the room and overheard the conversation between Loki and Doom. Loki used Endrik as a donation for Doom so he could try to use Endrik's organs. All this was done so that Doom could make himself immortal, just like the Asgardians. Loki then spotted Bill as he followed their conversation. Then he sent three Asgardian bandits after him. Bill tried to fight them, but he was stabbed with a sword by one of the warriors.

Mighty Avengers

When the god of chaos named Chton returned, Loki acted quickly to fix the problem. She appeared before some of the heroes in the guise of the Scarlet Witch (Scarlet Witch), gathering everyone in Wundagore (Woondagore). The Avengers, unaware of Loki's trick, followed the instructions of the fake Wanda.

Her goal was to use the Avengers to unbalance Norman. Loki intended to create "cracks in Osborn's armor" and gradually "expand" them. Pietro Maximoff, although he wanted to see and talk to his sister, only joined the Mighty Avengers after he had gone around the world looking for her.

However, Loki began to see Pietro and Cassy as growing problems for his plan, since they sincerely believed that she was Wanda; for the latter, it was an opportunity to avenge the death of her father. She dealt with Pietro by shutting down communications while he and the US agent were in Tibet, hoping that Pietro would die due to the emergency he had reported before the communications went down. At that moment, Cassie noticed her and tried to warn the others, but Loki cast a spell that prevented Cassie from saying anything bad about "Wanda". She then appeared before Henry Pym, who called himself the Wasp, and tried to convince him to expel Cassie from the team; Pym was ready to give a second chance, starting with their rescue along with the Fantastic Four.

Wanda soon encountered Cassie again when, thanks to the magic of Wikkan, she appeared in the Infinite Avengers Mansion. However, Clint Barton was able to get to her and kiss her, after which he said that it was not Wanda. Wiccan then cast a spell and revealed Loki's identity, forcing her to put up barriers so they couldn't summon her again, thus reversing the spell on Cassie.

Ages of Thunder

Asgard was attacked by the Frost Giants. All the gods were in battle, as if the end of Asgard would soon come. In the end, Thor defended Asgard. He brought down the mighty giant, who fell and destroyed the wall of Asgard that had stood since time immemorial. The wall was destroyed, but it was spring, once again. On the branches of Yggdrasil once again grew golden apples, for the Asgardians. And only the Enchantress had the power to pick apples from the great tree. All the gods gained wisdom and youth by eating apples. Everyone except Thor. Then Heimdall noticed a man walking in the direction of Asgard. He turned out to be a bricklayer who offered Odin to fix the destruction caused by the Giants. He also stated that he would restore the wall within a year if he received something in return. He did not need wealth or power, he needed the Enchantress. Loki spoke to Odin and they decided to accept the offer. However, they said that the mason had only six months. All the gods came to the conclusion that this task is beyond the power of man. However, the man set to work at an alarming rate and eventually almost completed the wall in less than six months. He had only one day left to complete the work. Enraged, Odin told Loki that if he did not correct the situation, then Odin would forever imprison him in stone. Then Loki turned into a mare to distract the man's horse. All night Loki "distracted" the horse and in the morning, the bricklayer could not complete the restoration of the wall. Odin told the man that he did not complete his work on time, but he knew that this was the work of Loki. So he began to threaten the Asgardians that he would kill them all and assumed his true form. The bricklayer turned out to be the Snow Giant, who was ready to curse the Ases. While he was fighting Loki and Odin, Thor returned from his recent journey and killed the Giant by throwing Mjolnir at him. Thor then ordered Loki to clean up his "mess". He passed through Asgard, holding the heads of several Frost Giants in his hands.

Loki was later banished from Asgard for yet another attempt at deception. Loki wandered around Asgard without food or any direction. It seemed as if he had been traveling in the snows for thousands of years. One day, an eagle began to soar above him, asking him questions. He laughed at Loki, seeing how weak and desperate he had become. The eagle offered Loki a deal. He will give him food in exchange for the Enchantress. Loki agreed and tricked the Enchantress into going to the top of the mountain, where he said the golden apples were. They climbed to the top, where the Snow Giant, who was the eagle, was waiting for them. He then grabbed the Enchantress and took her with him to become his queen. Asgardians began to starve, as there was no one to pick apples. Odin realized that Loki was involved and forced him to go to save the Enchantress. Loki returned to the Giant's lair to find Amora tied up and the sleeping giant. Loki began to free Amora, but at that moment the Giant woke up and found that the Enchantress was nowhere to be found. In the end, the giant caught both and kept them in his cave until they were rescued by Thor, who killed the Frost Giant with Mjolnir. Amora later returned to Asgard so that the Æsir could feast again.

The horned master of mischief and madness was last seen being attacked by the insane Void/Sentry over the ruins of the city of Asgard. This action could have been a way to fake his own death. His last words seemed to be, "I'm sorry, brother." Given the deal with Hela, it's reasonable to believe he didn't make it to Hel.

rebirth

After the events of the Siege, Thor mourned the death of his brother and decided to resurrect him. Loki found new life in the body of a Parisian pickpocket named Serrure, not knowing who he was or what he had become. Instead, Serrure pretended to perform card tricks while his accomplice stole their wallets. Thor confronted Loki in his new form while Serrur's accomplice robbed Thor, who was in human form. But Thor caught both and realized that Serrur is Loki. Thor returned with Loki home to the ruined Asgard, just at the moment of the arrival of the refugees of the World Tree, who fled from the fury of Uthana-Thoth. When Odin was brought back from Limbo to fight the Tenth World warriors, Loki fled, knowing that Odin would not approve of his return and the destruction that would undoubtedly result. Loki ran into Iron Man and was rescued by Thor, who protected the trickster for his own motives.

In order to avoid disapproval from the citizens of Asgard, Loki announced his intention to go to the human world and teach them the ways that Thor approved. But before he could go to his room, a magpie flew in, holding a key in its beak. This led Loki to the secret recesses of Asgard, where he received a message from a spiritual echo of himself that stated that death at the hands of the Gloom was part of a larger scheme of death and rebirth, and that young Loki was needed to complete it. However, Loki refused to follow this path and turned the spirit of himself into a magpie, which he named Ikol (Ikol). Returning to Earth, he witnessed how Odin knocked down Thor.

The latter challenged the wisdom of Odin in the destruction of Midgard in connection with the discovery of the news of the return of the Serpent. Thor was in custody while Odin was gathering an army of Aesir to destroy all traces of the Serpent's influence at any cost. Meanwhile, Loki, disagreeing with Odin's actions, was busy cleaning Thor's goat stall on Volstagg's orders, which kept him out of trouble. But most importantly, Volstagg did not let Loki interfere with Odin's plans. Ikol convinced Loki that if Odin continued like this, they would all die, so Loki quickly ran away. Using the wool of one of the goats, he descended to the roots of the World Tree to ask questions of the Norse women who lived there. Their wisdom made Loki cry because he didn't know if their path was the right one. He sought Thor's advice and broke into his cell, asking for help. Loki asked his brother what he would do if he knew that in order to stop the worst evil, he would have to do something bad and that if it cost him everything. With Thor's answer, Loki decided to release one of the Hel Wolfs and tie them to him with Thor's goat bridle. He revealed that he needed the help of another "character" before heading to Hela's dimension.

Once upon a time, Loki began to "make" an impossible plan. Play off Mephisto and Hela. In other words, play "in the middle". In the end, Loki got his hands on the Disir, the dead war god Tyr, and the Destroyer Armor. As an extra precaution, Hela sends her maid Leah along with the destruction of the Anti-Asgard Serpents. But Loki's command, or "Magical Secret Action Squad" as Loki called it, was nothing more than a distraction from Loki's true plans. To speak with Surtur, Disir kills Hel the Wolf and Loki sends him to Limbo. Realizing that he was dead, the Wolf decided to kill Loki, but was eaten by Surtur. Loki entered into an agreement with the demon, as a result of which he received a sliver of Surtur's Twilight Sword. Using it, Loki planned to rewrite the Asgardian myth and predict the Serpent's death at the hands of Thor. The Twilight Sword turned out to be truly the most powerful pen in the world. After that, Loki and Ikol returned to Asgard, where they released the Destroyer, with whom they returned to New York. There, Tyr and the Disir witnessed the rise of the citadel of the Serpent. While on the Destroyer, Loki told the others that they were going to destroy her.

Powers and abilities

Forces

Despite being one of the Frost Giants, Loki has similar attributes to Asami. After his rebirth, he lost most of his powers.

Magic: Loki has the ability to create and manipulate a large number of mystical abilities used for various purposes, such as further expanding or increasing his physical parameters: speed, strength, stamina, but only temporarily. With telekinetic abilities, Loki can influence the movement of objects and people through mental commands; thus, this ability proves to be destructive in nature. His known abilities include the ability to fire powerful beams of shocking force, generate high-strength force fields, grant superhuman powers to living beings or inanimate objects, and teleport between dimensions. Also, Loki can "revive" inanimate objects or mystically "fill" the same objects or living beings with certain powers, though for a while. For example, he increased the power of the criminals Cobra and Sandu. These magical effects only last as long as the spell that created them remains in effect. The Silver Surfer described Loki's powers during their first encounters as "enough to destroy the planet". Dormammu considered Loki's powers almost equal to his own.

Regenerative Healing Factor: Like all Aesir, Loki, while superhumanly durable, at least by human standards, can still sustain injury. Like all Asgardians, his metabolism allows him to quickly repair damaged tissue much faster than ordinary person. However, using his magic, Loki's ability to heal himself reaches values that are not available to other Aesir. His magical energies so permeated his body that he can reattach severed limbs and, while he was a man, Loki was able to reattach a severed head.

Superhuman Strength: Loki, without any help, through his own biology, possesses superhuman strength, surpassing that of the average Asa. In fact, he is currently stronger than before. Loki is able to lift a load of up to 50 tons. It is possible, however, that Loki can further increase his power through mystical enhancement, albeit only temporarily. Previously, his strength level reached 30 tons, although it could be increased.

Superhuman Stamina: Loki's metabolism as a Frost Giant grants him superhuman levels of physical endurance in almost all activities. Loki can keep himself at his peak state for 24 hours before the fatigue toxins begin to wear him down. However, his stamina, as well as his strength and durability, can be enhanced by Loki through magic.

Superhumanly dense fabrics: Like all Aces, Loki's tissue density is three times stronger than that of ordinary people. Although he looks and is similar in size to a human, his increased strength of body tissue makes him several hundred pounds heavier than he looks.

Superhuman Durability: The tissues in Loki's body are superhumanly durable and similar to those of an average Asgardian. However, from time to time, Loki "impregnated" himself with magical abilities, allowing him to withstand injuries that would be fatal to another Asgardian. Without harming himself, Loki is able to withstand high-caliber bullets, falls from great heights, physical collisions, exposure to extreme temperatures, and powerful energy blasts.

Superhuman Longevity: Loki, like the rest of Asa, ages much more slowly than ordinary people. However, unlike the Olympians, who stop aging after a certain amount of time, Loki is not "immune" to aging. Although he was recently "reborn", Loki still has all of his memories. Despite being several millennia old, he looks like a young Asgardian at his physical peak. Loki is immune to all known earthly diseases and infections.

Psionics: Loki has demonstrated powerful psionic abilities, the full extent of which is still unknown. He can project his thoughts telepathically, over vast distances, as well as powerful hypnotic abilities. Loki can communicate telepathically, but his strongest connection is with his servants.

Shape change: like a certain number of gods and goddesses, Loki has a highly developed abilities to change its form. He is able to take on almost any form, be it an animal, other humanoid objects, or even inanimate objects. It has been suggested that Loki's current body shape is preferable for the time being. Despite being a widely known ability, Loki himself revealed that when he tried his best to break out of Dormammu's mystical cage, this ability proved to be the most "soul-pulling", possibly meaning its high energy cost compared to the others. Loki took on the forms of animals such as a snake, an eagle, a mouse and a bee, while gaining the natural abilities of that animal. As long as he can take on the form of another god, giant, or human, he will not necessarily gain its abilities. Loki can also turn other objects into other substances or change their shape. For example, he turned clouds into dragons.

Capabilities

Loki possesses a genius-level intellect and extensive knowledge of the mystic arts, giving him a skill that surpasses that of the Sorcerer Supreme. He is also extremely cunning and is an expert tactician. On top of everything else, Loki is a formidable fighter, especially in combat using swords or various controlled energies.

Power Level

Weaknesses

While Loki possesses some sort of psionics, he cannot read the minds of other beings or control their actions. His ardent hatred of Thor, his lust for power, and his tendency to alienate himself through ignoble acts make it very difficult for Loki to carry out his plans. Loki's powers are believed to be somewhat less on Earth than in Asgard, as he was not connected to Gaia, and even Odin's magic on Earth is waning.

fixtures

Equipment

Sometimes Loki uses certain mystical items such as Norn Stones or rare Asgardian herbs to increase his magical abilities. These items or substances were typically used to enhance his personal strength or abilities, or to create a permanent mystical transformation, such as in the case of the Absorbing Man. He once used Surtur's mystical sword along with various Asgardian equipment to turn Thor into a frog while Loki was in Asgard and Thor was on Earth. The destruction of the equipment allowed Thor to return to his former form.

Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610)

Thor's half-brother, Balder, and son of Odin. Loki was the son of Odin and the Frost Giant Queen, as part of a peace treaty between Asgard and Jotunheim.

Thus, although Loki was part of the Warriors Three along with Thor and Balder, he was also the half-brother to Prince Mammon and was torn between devotion to his father and his mother. Growing up in Asgard, Loki became known as the god of mischief for his pranks and deceptions, although Baldr saw him as a dark figure, apparently due to Loki's association with Ragnarok. As one of the sons of Odin, Loki fought on the side of Asgard against Jotunheim, although after the victory he himself made it clear that his main goal was the approach of Ragnarok. Eventually, Loki stole the Norn Stones, killing Baldur in the process (for which he was later exiled). However, the self-proclaimed god of mischief and chaos waited for the opportunity to destroy Asgard, and that opportunity came when Loki, posing as Baron Zemo, promised the Third Reich to create one hundred thousand super-soldiers. Combined with an army of Frost Giants led by Mammon, Loki stormed Asgard and burned the World Tree before being confronted by Thor and Odin. However, Loki was defeated, and Odin, furious at Baldur's death, imprisoned his son in the "Room Without Doors". However, even though Asgard was destroyed, Loki remained imprisoned, where he contemplated the best means to disrupt Odin's plans for Earth.

After a failed alien invasion attempt, Loki escaped from his prison and headed to Earth to seek revenge on Thor. He colluded with the Liberators to destroy the Ultimates and start the Third world war as the god of harm. Reborn as a god (and Thor and Baldr were resurrected as mortals), Loki used his powers over reality to create the identity of Gunnar Golmen, a scientist and brother of Thorlief Golmen (supposedly Thor). Norwegian program to create super-soldiers and past life Thor as Torlief was fabricated to make Thor look insane and turn the Ultimates against him. Loki also used his powers to make it look like Captain America killed Hawkeye's family. His plans culminated in the invasion of the United States of America, where Loki participated as one of the leaders. Despite this, he hesitated to use his abilities to the fullest, as he didn't want his father to discover him.

However, despite all the Liberators' careful planning, the Ultimates were able to defeat them, killing most of the team members and their soldiers in the process. Then Loki decided to kill the Ultimates on their own, but then the Scarlet Witch stepped in, using her probabilistic powers to summon Thor.

Confronting his brother, Loki tried to imprison him in an illusion, but for unknown reasons, Loki's powers began to weaken. After surviving a direct confrontation with him, Loki decided to simply kill Thor and the Ultimates by summoning an army of Asgardian monsters while he fought Thor himself. At that moment, Loki lost all fear of Odin and was ready to kill his brother, but then Odin intervened. He sent an army of Asgardian warriors to fight the monsters and removed Loki's powers, leaving him vulnerable to Thor's hammer and presumably restoring Thor himself. Without his powers, Loki begged his brother and talked about how he was just jealous of him and wanted to see him fail. He also pointed out the absurdity of his actions and laughed at people's inability to understand it. Unimpressed by this, Thor summoned a massive lightning bolt and banished Loki back to Asgard as punishment from Odin.

After the Ultimatum Wave, the Ultimates were assembled with the help of Nick Fury and Carol Denvers - they split the team into two groups: the Avengers and the New Ultimates. Ka-Zar and Shanna also joined the Ultimates, but an army of Asgardian Beasts suddenly arrived along with a girl named Amora and Loki, who now looked more like himself from Earth-616.

MK2 (Earth-982)

Still regretting his actions in creating the Avengers, Loki brainwashed the old heroes, thus ruining their heroic reputation. All this happened until the young heroes intervened and especially Captain America, who broke the stone with which Loki influenced the heroes, almost ready to kill innocent people. For his actions, Loki was banished to Limbo where he was pursued by the Hulk, punishing him for what he did to the heroes.

Earth-X (Earth-9997)

In this reality, Loki tricked Odin into turning Thor into a woman. He later learned that the Asgardian gods are just long-lived mutants with huge force, which the Celestials have made them think they are gods. With this knowledge, he defeated the Absorbing Man and formed a new team of Avengers using the guise of Thor.

Guardians of the Galaxy (Earth-691)

In the 31st century, Loki fought the Guardians of the Galaxy. For centuries, he slept on the earth's moon, planning his invasion of Asgard. The Inhumans became his slaves, and through the generations, Loki selectively bred and pitted them against each other to create the perfect warriors. He also created the Composite, which has the abilities of Black Bolt, Medusa, Triton, and Gorgon.

Manipulating Aleta, which helped Loki destroy the gates of Asgard, he entered there. Once there, he saw Thor, who had become fat and unworthy of Mjolnir. This finally angered Loki, who realized that the assault on Asgard was a waste of time. He demanded that Asgard surrender. Thor's son Wotan went against his uncle and, with the help of Aleta and the Guardians of the Galaxy, defeated him. Odin imprisoned him and the Inhumans in a dark prison.

During one of his encounters with Deadpool, Loki told him that he was fully aware that he was a comic book character.

First appearance

Son of Laufey, he liked to do everything differently than others. One day he wanted to look at the life of giants, and he went to Jotunheim, the country of giants.

The whole day Loki wandered through the mountains, trying not to catch the eye of the jotun giants, and in the evening he got tired and decided to go to spend the night in the first house he came across. And he knocked on the door of the house where the giantess Angbroda lived. She was so ugly, angry and gloomy that not one of her fellow tribesmen was flattered by her, so she lived all alone, not expecting any changes in her life.

Angbroda let the guest into her house and began to treat him with beer and mead. She never took her eyes off Loki; she had never seen such a handsome young man before. Even the most beautiful jotuns seemed rough and awkward to Angbroda when she compared them mentally with a white-skinned and slender young ace.

Loki noticed the impression he made on the gloomy giantess, but this did not frighten him. Of course, he did not want to respond to the passion of such an ugly woman, but on reflection, he decided that this was not such a big sacrifice, but it would be possible to live in her house until the time came to return to Asgard. That's how he became Angbroda's lover.

Loki never fell deeply in love, but willingly allowed himself to be loved. Angbroda did not know how best to please her beloved, and he lived carefree in her house, or rather, spent the night in it, spending days wandering around Jotunheim.

Finally, the giantess became pregnant, and then gave birth to three children of Loki. There were these little monsters: a wolf cub, a serpent, and a girl who could not be looked at without fear, because one half of her face and body was black and blue, and the other was the color of raw meat.

Of course, it was impossible to be proud of such children, but Loki was not particularly upset when he saw them. He was already tired of life in Jotunheim and he only thought about how to return to the feasts and other fun of Asgard. Taking advantage of the fact that Angbroda took care of the newborns. Loki slipped away from Jotunheim and appeared as if nothing had happened in Asgard. He did not tell anyone about his children, and he himself did not remember them.

But soon the volva appeared in Asgard and predicted great misfortunes to the gods that the terrible children of Loki would bring to them and the world.

- What can we expect, except for troubles, from the children of such a mother, and even more so of such a father? - the aces talked among themselves, having learned who Angbroda was.

Loki was forced to tell everything, and Odin sent Thor and Tyr to bring little monsters to Asgard. But he did not intend to kill them, because even the gods could not avoid what was about to happen. Alive or dead, the children of Loki will bring doom to the world, since it was foretold. Even before the prophecy of the volva, Odin saw vague images of the future, because he, like many other gods, was endowed with the gift of foresight.

Finally, Thor and Tyr returned to Asgard with the children of Loki - the wolf cub Fenrir, the serpent Jörmungandr and the young giantess Hel.

Jörmungandr was already so huge that the aces were more afraid of him than the other two monsters. Odin told Thor to throw the serpent into the ocean surrounding the earth. Since then, Jörmungandr has grown so much that it has turned into a ring around the land.

The daughter of Loki, the giantess Hel, stooped and ferocious in appearance, with blue-black and red skin, according to the prophecy of the völva, was to become the ruler of the Kingdom of the Dead, Niflhel. Everyone who died of illness and old age was destined to go to Niflhel, except for the dead girls who go to Asgard to the goddess Gefion. Odin told Hel about what fate awaits her, and this pleased her. Without delay, the giantess went to underworld Dead.

And the gods decided to raise the wolf cub Fenrir, the son of Loki, in Asgard, although it was he who was named the future killer of Odin in the prophecy of the velva.

Loki's children - Fenrir, Jörmungandr and Hel

At first, the wolf cub did not look so dangerous, and only a few days later, when they saw how quickly Fenrir was growing, the aces realized that soon no one would be able to cope with him. Odin ordered to forge a strong chain in order to put Fenrir on it.

When the chain was ready, the aces came with it to where the wolf cub was walking, but they did not dare to come close to him. Loki's son Fenrir was now so huge that only Tyr, who brought him from Jotunheim, was not afraid to play with him. Ases showed the chain to the young wolf and asked:

“Fenrir, would you like to test your strength?” We will put this chain around your neck and bind your legs with it, and you try to break it.

The wolf looked at the chain and replied that it was not difficult to break it.

Tyr entangled Fenrir with this chain, the wolf tensed a little - its links scattered around.

The aces pretended to admire the power of Fenrir, while they themselves were incredibly upset. They immediately left to forge a new chain, and made it three times thicker and stronger.

Only Fenrir had grown up to the day when this new chain was ready, as soon as they entangled the wolf with it, he rushed, strained, and the chain burst.

The aces became terribly: they realized that they themselves would not be able to forge a chain capable of holding a mighty wolf.

Only the aces had hope for the zwerg masters, and she did not deceive them. The tsvergs forged a chain that had never been seen before: it looked thin and light, like a silk cord, but none of the aces managed to break it, no matter how hard they tried.

What did you make this chain from? Maybe she's bewitched? - the aces of the tsvergs asked, and they answered, grinning in their beards:

- We connected six entities in this chain: the sound of cat steps, women's beards, mountain roots, bear veins, the breath of fish and the saliva of birds.

- But where did you get all this? – wondered aces. “However, all this, apparently, really went to your chain, because you won’t see such curiosities anywhere else.

The aces thanked the masters for a long time: with this leash, they thought, Fenrir could not break loose.

But it was not easy to put a chain on the wolf, when he saw a thin silk ribbon, he suspected that they wanted to deceive him. And the gods talked among themselves about the strength of the rope, tried to break it with their hands, and encouraged Fenrir. “Look,” they said, “the rope is stronger than it looks.” And they added: “But our wolf will tear it, there’s nothing to think about!”

“It’s very thin, this ribbon of yours,” said Fenrir, “what should I be proud of if I break it?” Apparently, there is some kind of trick in it. But then I can hardly get out of it. No, she must not be on my paws! It seems to me that you are planning to tie me up and kill me. I see you are afraid of me.

- Fenrir, you broke two thick chains, and you were afraid of some kind of ribbon. Think for yourself, if you do not tear it, then you are not so strong, and we will not be afraid of you. Why would we kill you then? Just untie and let go.

- No, I don't believe you! the wolf answered. “If I don’t break these fetters, I won’t leave your hands alive!” And rather than accusing me of cowardice, it is better to let one of you put his hand in my mouth. Only with such a pledge, I will believe that everything will be without deception. And then I will let you bind me with your ribbon.

The aces looked at each other: no one wanted to lose a hand. “And there is no grief for Loki! Bragi said in an undertone. “He’s wandering around somewhere again while we’re puzzling over how we should be with his offspring!”

Suddenly Tyr stepped decisively towards Fenrir and put his right hand into his mouth. The Aesir hurriedly tied the wolf with a magic ribbon, attached it to a large stone slab dug into the ground. The wolf rested its paws on the ground, rushed, but could not break its bonds - on the contrary, they became even stronger, clasped his body even tighter.

The aces laughed with joy, and only Tyr was not laughing: Fenrir, seeing that he had been deceived, clenched his teeth and bit off his hand. Then he rushed at the aces standing around, but they managed to jump back to a safe distance. Only One remained standing, and when Fenrir was very close, the lord of the aces unexpectedly thrust his sword into his gaping mouth, the tip of which rested on the sky, and the handle was under the tongue, so that the wolf could no longer close his mouth, and saliva flowed from it like a river. .

The gods did not kill him, so as not to defile Asgard with spilled blood: there is no place for murder in the abode of the gods. They released Fenrir into an underground cave, where he sits now, waiting for the end of the world: when all the shackles will burst. Then the son of Loki Fenrir will look for Odin to avenge his captivity.

According to the retelling of Scandinavian myths made by E. L. Kuvanova

The Scandinavian god Loki is very popular, this is a bright, pretentious character who usually causes a smile and the most positive emotions, despite the fact that aces and people have suffered a lot because of his antics. Loki is a god in many ways unique. He lives with the Aesir in Asgard, but he himself comes from the Jotun family, his father is Farbauti (“hard-hitting”), and his mother is Lauveya (“island of larches”). Ases knew Laufey under the name Nal, which means "needle". Nal brought little Loki to Asgard after the death of Farbauti and soon died herself, presumably from grief.

Loki is a god, but you need to understand that he is fundamentally different from those with whom he lives, from the aces and vans of Asgard. In general, this is a classic trickster, that is, a "deceiver", "cunning". Actually, the aces took him for an incredibly dodgy mind and the ability to find a way out of any situation. Thus, Loki is the god of deceit, witchcraft, volatility, cunning, deceit, intrigue, lobbies. Also, Loki is the god of mankind, in the sense that among all the inhabitants of Asgard, he most of all resembles a mere mortal. He is in constant search, he is interested in the secrets of the universe, he asks questions that others simply do not think about. But far from always his thoughts are sublime. Loki is a vengeful, envious, dishonest god. However, he is not so bad, because he knows compassion and sacrifice (even if forced). Suffice it to recall the corresponding episode of the “Younger Edda”, which tells how Loki, in the form of a mare, distracts the magical stallion Svadilfari, due to which the master jotun was not able to build an impregnable wall around Midgard in one winter. So Loki saved Freya from a terrible marriage and helped the aces maintain their dignity.

Another Eddic song tells how Loki (the god of mischief, among other things) once again saves the honor of Asgard, becoming the only one who managed to make Skadi, the daughter of the giant Thiazzi, who kidnapped Idunn and her golden apples that gave immortality to the gods, laugh. In addition, it is Loki who, in the Song of Sigurd, goes to the Brisings for gold, which should be a ransom for the killed otter, thus saving Odin and Hoenir. Of course, Loki is an ambiguous god, in the sense that, unlike other heroes of Scandinavian legends, his actions are ambivalent, sometimes he helps aces and people, and sometimes his actions harm them. In addition, we must not forget that during Ragnarok, Loki will fight on the side of Hel against the Aesir and will meet in a deadly battle with Heimdal.

Scandinavian god Loki: etymology, origin, family

The god Loki plays one of the key roles in Scandinavian mythology, but the question of the origin of his name is still open. One of the main versions (which confirms the idea that Loki is the god of fire, an element with a changeable disposition) is based on the assumption that the word "loki" comes from the more ancient "log", which means "fire" in Old Norse. ". It is also suggested that Loki is derived from the Old Norse "lúka", which means "lock, complete". There are other versions according to which the Scandinavian god Loki is close to the cult of the bear (from the Lithuanian "lokys" - "bear") or the cult of the wolf (from the Greek "Λύκος" - "wolf").

Above was a myth that says that Loki is a god from the genus of jotuns, not aces. But there are other legends that contradict this version. Some researchers believe that the Scandinavian god Loki was the son of the primordial frost giant Ymir, probably his firstborn, who appeared long before Odin. According to this version, his brothers and sisters are Hler (water), Ran (sea), Kari (air), and then the idea that Loki himself is the god of fire looks quite logical.

The Scandinavian god Loki is not alone, in the sense that he has a family, and what a family! His first wife is a mighty giantess warrior, and his children are known to all of us - this is the goddess of Helheim named Hel, the chthonic serpent Jörmungandr, the infernal wolf Fenrir. From his second wife, Sigyn (her parentage is unclear) norse gods Loki has two children - Vali and Narvi. The fate of this couple is very sad. After the god Loki (in Scandinavian mythology, this plot is an exception in many ways) finally “got” the aces with his antics, his eldest son (apparently, Vali) was turned into a wolf and set on the younger (Narvi). The intestines of the murdered Narvi Loki were tied to a rock, over which they placed a huge poisonous snake. The poison drips onto Loki's face and he writhes in unbearable pain (the Scandinavians believed that this was the cause of earthquakes). However, this does not happen often, since Sigyn (an allegory of a faithful wife and inconsolable mother) holds a bowl over Loki's face, thus protecting him from poison. But when the cup overflows, Sigyn steps back to pour out the poison, then the poison dripping from the snake's mouth falls on Loki's face.

God Loki in Scandinavian mythology: (un)fairly condemned?

The god Loki in Scandinavian mythology plays an important plot-forming role. As we have already found out, he often interfered with the aces, but also helped them to the same extent. Such things as Gungnir (Odin's spear), Mjolnir (Thor's hammer), Skidbladnir (Freyr's ship), Draupnir (Baldr's ring), Gullinbursti (Freyr's boar) appeared among the lords of Asgard precisely thanks to the cunning and wisdom of the god Loki. In Scandinavian mythology, it is difficult to find a more successful "getter" of magical artifacts! Nevertheless, the god Loki (pictures with his image can be found in ancient Icelandic lists) was condemned to eternal torment. Strictly speaking, in the context of this story, it is not surprising that in the last battle he fights the aces on the side of his daughter.

What does the god Loki look like? The image of this cunning is given in the “Younger Edda” by Snoria Sturlusson, where Loki is short and good-looking, he probably has long hair and a beard. This description corresponds to the famous depiction of the god Loki in the pages of the Edda Oblongata, a seventeenth-century Icelandic manuscript. In general, images of the god Loki are widely represented by European painters of the 18th-19th centuries, but it is difficult to say how objective they are. Much more curious are the English paintings of the 11th century, but there the emphasis is more on his wife Sigiyun, and not on the god Loki himself. Pictures of modern origin often have nothing to do with historical originals, especially when it comes to Hiddleston as a charismatic Marvel villain.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that the god Loki (images from the original Icelandic sources are presented above, they are not difficult to distinguish from later ones by their characteristic technique) is indeed the most controversial character in Scandinavian mythology. In this sense, one cannot fail to recall the famous "Harley of Loki" from the Elder Edda. In that episode, the trickster accuses the gods and goddesses of Asgard of cowardice, lies, dishonor and unchastity, and all his accusations are fair. In addition, Loki admits his guilt for the death of Baldur. We often forget this episode, although, in all likelihood, it is in it that the true image of the hero is revealed.

God Loki is the most mysterious character in Scandinavian mythology, belonging to the caste of Scandinavian aesir gods. Starting his life with innocent pranks, over the years he turned into a cunning and malevolent god, able to reincarnate to achieve his goals. His whole life consists in helping some gods and giants and harming others. Loki is unpredictable in his actions, he, like an element, is inseparable from danger and destruction, leading to change and the birth of a new life. It coexists at the same time good and evil, death and survival. He is called for help when there is no longer any hope of salvation. And at the same time, knowing no barriers in malicious acts, Loki represents the embodiment of evil, which contributed to the death of the gods and the destruction of the traditional world order.

Loki (god): mythology will tell about his family

His parents are the giant Farbauti and Laufey (Nal). In Scandinavian myths, it is said that Loki had two brothers - Henir and Odin. Loki's first wife was Glut, akin to the element of fire, by whom he had two daughters. The second time he married the giantess Angrbod, from whom three monsters were born - Hel, the goddess of the kingdom of the Dead, the wolf Fenrir and the giant serpent Ermungandr. His third wife was the devoted Sigyn, who gave birth to sons Nari and Narvi. Loki also tested himself in a maternal role, turning into a mare, he seduced the stallion Svadilfari, and gave birth to a wonderful eight-legged horse Sleipner, capable of traveling through nine worlds. But Loki did not stop at this in continuing his kind. One of the legends says that he became the progenitor of all witches when he ate the charred heart of an evil woman, which is why he conceived and gave birth to the offspring of sorceresses.

Appearance and character

Loki is a skilled werewolf

Loki is known as the skilled god of transformation. His unique ability reincarnation in any animal, change in appearance and gender gave rise to the expression "mask of the god Loki." To accomplish his good and evil plans, he turns into a horse, fish, insects, birds and pinnipeds. But most of all, a spider is suitable for him, similar to him in name in Swedish - lockke. He often takes on a female appearance to achieve his goal - the goddess Freya, the giantess Tekk and Angbord, uses dressing up in women's clothes. Loki's magical attributes are magic shoes.

God of fire

In one version of the origin, Loki is the god of fire. It is believed that his name comes from the word "logi" - fire. Like it or not, but in the distant Stone Age, people revered Loki as the god of fire. His element was an indomitable fire, burning with a bright flame. There is a legend that once the God of Fire Loki staged a competition with his own element - the Spirit of Fire. Its essence is who will eat more. God himself mastered only part of the available food, but the Spirit of Fire grew into a giant and began to eat everything - food, dishes, a table, leaving behind only ashes. Loki's first wife, when he was the God of Fire, was Glut, which means "shine". She bore him two daughters - Eiza (coal) and Enmira (ash). All family names were closely associated with fire and heat, so the peasants honored Loki as a god hearth. In a deep sense, Loki was the Light-bearer god, awakening divine fire hiding in every earthly being.

Loki's habitat

Loki never had a permanent home. He traveled the nine worlds, but he was most often encountered in Jotunheim. In Asgard, for a number of reasons, he appeared very rarely, except when he had an appointment with some ace there. Where he is now, whether he has freed himself from the shackles and left the dark cave, no one knows, but it is believed that this does not prevent him from reincarnating in another guise and traveling in all nine worlds. Even exile from Asgard, a cruel punishment that brought deep wounds to the body and soul, could not change him. He remained strong, cunning and dangerous to those who did not please him.

Loki in the modern world

People born between January 21 and February 19 are considered to be born in the month of Loki. The insidious deity tries to influence their fate and constantly subjects them to various tests, testing their endurance, honesty and frankness. Norse mythology has been around for many centuries. He was made a character in many books, music, movies and even computer games. At the same time, the characteristics of this deity have many controversial interpretations among researchers and mythologists. The main data about Loki is contained in such works as the "Younger Edda" and "Elder Edda", written by the Icelandic writer Snorri Sturluson in the 11th century in the form of textbooks on skaldic poetry.

Essence and origin

Loki - Scandinavian deceit and cunning. Snorri also gave deities: he is handsome, short, thin, and his hair has a fiery red color. His distinguishing features are a sharp mind, deceit, resourcefulness, cunning and duplicity, as well as the ability to change appearance. Thanks to these qualities, the Ases allowed the Jotun to live in Asgar. This god also has several other names: Lodur, Loft and Hvedrung.

Regarding the origin of Loki, it is believed that his father was Farbauti, and his mother was Lauvei (another name is Nal). Although, according to some other researchers, Loki existed even before Odin, because his father was the giant Ymir, the air Kari and the water Khler were brothers, and the goddess Ran was a sister. And only later, the god of fire and deceit entered the triad of demiurges along with Odin and Khenir. Despite the fact that in the modern interpretation of Scandinavian mythology, various sources indicate that Thor and Loki are antipodes, in the same Snorri Sturluson, Odin is the twin god of deceit, but at the same time his opposite. But the god of thunder only occasionally kept the cunning deity company in certain situations.

Characteristic

Mythology reveals a very versatile cunning deity. God Loki possessed many necessary qualities, for which the aces endured his antics and turned a blind eye to many things. In many situations, he rescued other gods, but in most of these cases, they got into trouble precisely because of Loki, who saved his own skin or saw any benefit. The insidious god helped the aces, then the giants, and for a long time it suited them all, especially since at the beginning of his appearance in Asgard, Loki was good, as far as possible for the god of deceit, he helped the gods many times. Together with Odin, he participated in the creation of the world, together with other demiurges he breathed life into the wooden prototypes of people. He helped the gods obtain or return many treasures. However, later, becoming angrier and gaining more demonic essence, the god Loki deserved the hatred of the aces, whom he constantly quarreled with each other and became the embodiment of all troubles, up to Ragnarok. This deity has become an analogue of Lucifer in Scandinavian mythology.

personal gain

In the adventure, together with Odin and Hernir, described in the "Younger Edda", the god Loki hit Tiazzi, who turned into an eagle and tried to take the best pieces of food prepared by the Ases, but stuck to the giant, who took him to his lair. Tiazzi promised to release Loki in exchange for Idunn and her, and he, thanks to his cunning and deceit, led the goddess to the giant. But aces without apples began to grow old and forced Loki to return Idunn. Turning into a falcon, the culprit was able to return the goddess to Asgard, and the other gods killed Tiatia the eagle who flew in after her. This case perfectly demonstrates that Loki, for the most part, did any actions only on the basis of his own benefit or the threat to his life.

Adventures with Thor

But nevertheless, the insidious god also had such deeds that can be called disinterested. Only thanks to his mind, resourcefulness and cunning, the god of thunder was able to return his legendary hammer Mjollnir. Thor and Loki went to the lair of the etun Thrym, who stole the legendary weapon, disguised as his bride and her maid. The sly one persuaded the giant to show his bride a great hammer, and when Hold showed Mjollnir, Thor managed to snatch the hilt and defeat the kidnapper.

But these two gods also had such adventures in which Loki substituted his companion. To save his life, the born jotun brought Thor directly to the lair of the giant Geirrod, the Thunderer could only be saved thanks to the kind Grid.

Heritage

Like many deities from various pantheons, Loki also has a peculiar heritage. It is believed that initially he was not evil, being the spirit of life. Together with his wife Glut (shine), the fire god Loki was considered a symbol of the hearth. From his first marriage he had two children - Enmira and Eiza. However, the further, the more Loki became embittered and demonized. His second wife was the giantess Angrboda, their secret marriage in the Iron Forest of Jotunheim was forbidden by Odin, who became even more angry when he learned about the birth of three monster children: the red-blue Hel, the terrible wolf Fenrir and the huge serpent Jörmungandr. Odin threw Hel to Niflheim, where she became Jörmungand, sent to the bottom of the sea, where he became the World Serpent, but Fenrir was initially taken to Asgard, where he tried to put him on a chain, but none of them could keep the mighty wolf, and as a result he was cast into the underworld.

The god Loki also gave birth to the legendary eighth stallion Odin Sleipnir. Using his ability, he turned into a mare to distract the horse Svadilfari, thanks to which the jotun-mason promised the aces to build Asgard in record time, and the gods did not want to pay his bills. The third and last wife of Loki was Sigyn, who bore him two sons: Vali and Narvi (or Ali and Nari).

Wrath of the gods

At a feast at Aegir (sea giant), the god Loki impartially denounced the aces in their shortcomings and confessed to the murder of Balder, the son of Odin. For the gods, this was the last straw. They seized the villain and both of his sons, turned Vali into a wolf who tore his brother to pieces, and tied Loki to three stones with the bowels of Narvi, and hung a snake over his head, the poison of which was supposed to drip onto the face of the offending deity and bring him hellish torment. Sigyn held a bowl in which she collected poison so that it would not fall on her husband's face. But when it overflowed and it was necessary to empty it, drops fell on Loki's face, and the earth itself shook from his torment. And so on until Ragnarok itself, during which the god Loki fought against the aces.
