Scientists, parapsychologists and esotericists from all over the world have been trying to lift the veil of secrecy and find out what happens to a person at the very moment when life ends and death occurs. Attempts to find omens of imminent death are often tried in a person's dreams, perceiving them as a transitional state from life to death. So is there a connection between dreams and death? Is it worth being afraid of what is written in the dream book? And is it possible to understand from what you see in a dream that the last day is near?

IF YOU LOOK INTO THE DREAM BOOK

Often, after disturbing and terrible dreams, people first of all turn to the dream book. Not that everyone believes in what is written, as well as in the ability to interpret dreams in general, but this helps to satisfy curiosity or calm oneself.

First, the most obvious misconception is that death in a dream portends death in reality. Even in dream books, one's own death in a dream is not considered as an omen of imminent death in real life.

For example, according to Miller's dream book, one's own death means doubts and hesitations in real life, admission of one's own guilt, fear of an accomplished action or event. According to Freud's dream book, one's own death personifies the fear of losing independence. Vanga even believed that a dream of death is a sign of a long and happy life next to a loved one. A similar interpretation was given by Nostradamus and the medium Miss Hosse. Thus, one’s own death in a dream, according to dream books, can in no way be considered an omen of death in real life.

The approaching death is predicted by completely different dreams. For example, a lost tooth with blood will mark the death of a blood relative. Or the arrival of a dead man, for whom a person agreed to go in a dream. The symbols foreshadowing death also include: a celestial body falling from the sky, a boat crossing a river, muddy and musty water, digging a hole, a croaking crow, otherworldly forces, falling into a well or other depression.

But if we turn to more serious arguments, is there any evidence that dreams are in any way connected with death, are capable of foreshadowing it, or simply reflect real life experiences?

Psychology became interested in the study of the dreams of dying people in the 19th century. For example, the philosopher and psychologist Maria Louise von Franz, in her book “On Dreams and Death,” described how she observed the dreams of terminally ill people, in many of them death appeared as a passage through a tunnel, a dark spot or cloud that expands and threatens the dreamer. For example, a young woman who suffered from an incurable disease and died on the operating table, shortly before her death, described her dream as follows:

“I am at the edge of the lake with my husband and friends. The lake is very deep, the water is clear, transparent blue. Suddenly, in the depths of the lake, I see a black bird. She is dead. I have great sympathy for her and want to dive in and find and rescue her. The thought of her being dead is unbearable to me. My husband carefully but insistently intervenes and asks me not to do this, because, according to him, this is how it should be. I look deep into the lake once more and see the bird's eyes, which appear as brilliant diamonds. After that, I wake up."

Von Franz in this case calls the bird a symbol of the spirit of life that has died out in the body. In other dreams there were images of a black spot, a dark box. According to her observations, in dreams before death one rarely sees beautiful and colorful images. Another common image is a journey.

“I packed two suitcases. One of them contained my work clothes, and the other my jewelry, diaries and photographs. The first was for the mainland, and the second for America, ”one of the patients told about her dream shortly before her death.

Carl Jung, who also observed the dreams of terminally ill people, concluded that shortly before death, people begin to see events in their dreams from the early years of life. In addition, patients often heard beautiful music in their dreams, saw humanoid beings, motionless figures of people with Mongolian features, as well as wide landscapes and rocks from which voices emanate. But unlike Von Franz, Jung concludes that the closer death is, the more beautiful dreams look. And negative images are dreamed of when the human body begins to fall ill.

« The closer death is, the more beautiful dreams become, it seems that some kind of new life: to reach this life, the human body must perish,” he writes.

The well-known neuropathologist Mikhail Astvatsaturov, while observing dreams, concluded that nightmares before death are most often dreamed of by people suffering from heart disease, they begin, as a rule, in the latent period. In a dream, there is a fear of death. Today it is even accepted that in the absence of visible symptoms, frequent nightmares are an occasion to see a doctor and check the heart.

WHAT IS THE RELATION BETWEEN SLEEP AND DEATH?

Studies show that in the vast majority of cases, dreams are secondary, psychologist and hypnotherapist Vasily Danilov told the correspondent of MIR 24.

“Dreams are a metaphorical analysis of the most vivid events experienced by a person in recent times, and got to the subconscious level of perception. Actually, at the subconscious level, all changes occur, which then manifest themselves in consciousness. For example, a doctor, a person whose words, by definition, immediately fall into the patient's subconscious, declares that the situation is complex and the prognosis is unfavorable. Unfortunately, today, incorrect formulations of doctors are common. The patient instantly has a fear of imminent death. Perhaps not the first time, but the second or third time this message will reach the subconscious,” he said.

At the same time, in practice it turns out that if a person perceives a dream as an omen, then the subconscious mind will begin to actively work on the realization of this very dream.

“At this moment, the second stage is launched. When a dream is taken as an omen. And the subconscious begins to work hard to fulfill. The process goes in cycles, bringing a quick death closer. Often out of the blue. A similar case was described, for example, by the doctor Pavel Bul in the book “The Theory of Medical Hypnosis,” says Danilov.

According to the psychologist, even if you had such a dream, you should perceive it not as an inevitability, but as an attempt by the subconscious to help.

“Any dream is a sign. An attempt by our subconscious to help us. To warn us about something, to suggest. Dreams of imminent death are no exception. It is important to treat such a dream correctly. Such a dream should not be taken as inevitable. Only as a warning about the need to change something in life, ”concluded Danilov.

There is no direct connection between dreams and death, says somnologist Maxim Mironov. But dreams are able to inform people both about the experienced experience and about future events connected with this experience.

“First of all, I have to disappoint lovers of mysticism: there is no direct connection between sleep and death. But our brain is a very complex organ with many functions, which is ahead of consciousness. While our dreams are great informants about the experience, or about future events associated with this experience.

If we combine these two facts, we get the following picture: a seriously ill person, day after day, hour after hour, is in a certain state, understanding the inevitability of what is happening. The moment of death forever remains hidden for a person, and dreams testify to the spiritual nature, believes founder of the theta-healing club "7 PLAN" Natalya Chumakova.

Dreams foreshadowing death can be dreamed by people even when a person simply realized the fact of the existence of death or was afraid of it, said psychologist and founder of the training center "Right Decision" Natalia Kalaberdina.

“From the point of view of psychology, and Freud was the first to analyze dreams, if a person was sick or thought about death, then he would probably dream of something. Freud wrote that at such moments, scenes of parting, moving, and some types of transport are dreamed. But when a person does not know about death, he does not dream of anything. At the same time, Freud said that in any human cell there is information about the entire history of mankind. He described a case when a small child in his mind had an idea about being, the structure of man, dust.

Thus, dreams symbolizing death can be dreamed of by a person when he realized that death exists, was frightened of some fact of death. Jung said that dreams are symbols, and symbolism is very individual, therefore, in the mind of each person, death can be perceived by a different spectrum of symbols. At the same time, it was Jung who described the theories of archetypes and the methods of archetypal defenses, which, when consciousness collides with frightening images, seek security symbols. Among the most terrible nightmares that torment people at night, dreams of death should certainly come first. And in almost all dream books, separate chapters are devoted to this problem. This is no accident.

In itself, the arrival in our dreams of people who have left this world does not carry anything bad. What matters is what happens. And even seeing your own funeral in a dream does not mean that you will soon leave this world. Such dreams should be divided into two main categories - dreams dedicated to the death of people dear to us, and those in which a person sees his own death. They need to be discussed separately.

Dream about the death of loved ones

So, what dreams portend the death of a loved one? There are a great many plots of such dreams, it’s simply impossible to list them all here. Let's mention the most obvious ones:

• if in a dream a tooth falls out without blood, this is a harbinger of the death of a loved one in general;
• if with blood, a relative will die;
• a bad omen is a bird knocking on a window pane, especially if it breaks it and breaks into the room;
• the setting sun, the sandy desert, an empty bed - all this is also a dream on the eve of the death of loved ones.

Perhaps you are foreshadowed by some drastic changes that will radically transform your life, so that it will become completely different from the previous one.

The closer death is, the more beautiful dreams become

With a broad approach to the phenomena of mental life in the process of dying, especially in the phase , it is possible to say that they are, as it were, varieties of human dreams. This is a special kind of dream.

On the other hand, many dreams reflect the problems associated with death, images and thoughts appear in which the sleeper foresees both his own death and the death of other people, often with the help of symbols. Therefore, it can be argued that psychological thanatology and the psychology of dreams are closely interrelated areas of modern psychology. Considering these interrelations, perhaps we will be able to find new areas of research in psychic phenomena, which are now only emerging.

Here we will consider how a person in his dreams can foresee and anticipate his own death.

The analysis of a person's dreams prior to his death is of interest for several reasons. The first of these is that to be in front of an inevitable end means to experience the deepest frustration and psychic shock. There is no doubt that a person needs to mobilize all his defenses and capabilities against such existential frustration. The study of such states makes it possible to learn a lot about the abilities of people's mental self-defense.

The second reason is as follows: the expectation of death can activate in the human psyche such abilities that were previously poorly developed, “slumbering” in the depths of the mental world. For the disclosure and development of certain abilities, a person must experience deep mental changes, unrest and conversion, radical shifts in his inner peace. The expectation of death causes changes that are reflected in people's dreams. Therefore, the study of people's dying dreams requires special attention.

In the field of psychology, the famous C. G. Jung, a Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist, philosopher, who at the beginning of his career was a follower of Z. Freud, paid some attention to the study of dreams preceding the death of a person. He was interested in the dreams of hopelessly ill people who no longer had salvation.

He believed that in such a critical state "the unconscious is powerfully agitated." A person remembers the impressions of the early years of his life. Approaching the moment of death, a person in his dreams begins to hear beautiful, "unreal" music. The dying person sees humanoid beings standing in the doors of some buildings, from which a strong light is reflected. Many people can hear unusual voices, they see powerful color images, figures of people, distinguished by luxury, light and psychic strength.

Some of the dying see motionless figures of people with Mongolian features: they stand and watch how a person dies. Mortally ill people dream of wide landscapes, rocks, from the crevices of which jets of light come out, they hear voices that seem to come from the depths of the earth. They see fortresses built in the mountains. Some voices invite them to travel on the stormy sea. “The closer death is, the more beautiful dreams become,” says C. G. Jung, “it seems that some new life begins with these magnificent pictures: in order to achieve this life, the human body must die.”

It is curious that both in the works of C. G. Jung himself and other representatives of his “analytical” school, such descriptions are given that are in many respects similar to the phenomena, much later, already in the 1970s, described in the works of researchers of clinical death .

So, for example, E. Epley, one of the representatives of the Jungian school, talks about a man who was in a near-death crisis state for 5 days in a row, but survived. After he returned to consciousness, he said that these 5 days of his life were full of rows of beautiful images.

He saw himself in narrow road, which led him to distant, wild and bluish-purple mountains. Jumping from one rock to another, he again found himself in a green valley. Here, on the rivers flowing to the south, he saw ancient and high bridges. Suddenly he noticed that he was in the sea: the sun was approaching him, and he was standing at the bottom of the sea. Between him and the sun grow some earthly beautiful plants. Then he sees himself already on the seashore, in the waves of which huge fish appear: they, making wild movements, approach the dreamer. After that, he is back in the valley.

Heads, faces are visible from the cracks of the rocks, even individual eyes are looking at him. On one tree, he sees the beautiful face of a dead woman, as if made of marble. Then the eyewitness finds himself inside some high walls and sees that a Mongol is standing in the corner: he has a yellow-brown face, black and thick hair, large and sinister eyes. The Mongol disappears, after which the dreamer has the feeling that the eyes of some animals are looking at him. It seems to him that he is going crazy and screams in fear: “Enough!”. And he immediately sees himself in a beautiful hall, from the ceiling of which the “divine eye” is looking at him. After these images disappear, the crisis is over.

There is no doubt that these experiences reflected not only some still incomprehensible forces, but also the religious and racial ideas of a dying and resurrected person.

Thus, the theme of death is expressed in dreams in the form of various images. The nature and associative links of these images are influenced by the process of deterioration and improvement of human health, the beginning of the development of diseases in it. Studies have shown that due to a general deterioration in health, a person, in addition to images of spoiled food, dirt, muddy waters and other similar things, often sees in a dream a cemetery, individual graves, corpses and other images that are somehow related to the theme of death. Such dreams seem to notify that the body has begun to decompose and die.

This type of dream was of great interest to C. G. Jung in particular.

He described the following tragic incident: a girl of eight years gave such great importance her dreams, that day after day she wrote them down and at the age of 10, in the form of a New Year's gift, she presented them to her father. Father was a psychiatrist. He was very worried that his daughter had such dreams, but could not interpret them. 7 out of 10 dreams described destruction and reconstruction, death and resurrection in characteristic images. It seemed that dreams were reporting some imminent catastrophe. Indeed, the girl died at the age of 12. As C. G. Jung said, her death cast its shadow back in time, over her life and dreams.

In dreams, the fear of death is most often experienced in cases where dreamers suffer from heart disease. This circumstance was first described in the 30s of the last century by the famous doctor M.I. Astvatsaturov. He wrote that if a person has a latent period in the development of heart disease, he has terrible, nightmarish dreams, because of which he wakes up. In a dream, there is a fear of death.

However different people, suffering from the same heart disease, they experience fear in different dream situations, in front of different images. At least today it is generally accepted that, even if all other symptoms are absent, only the experience of fear in dreams indicates a latent (hidden, latent) beginning of the development of heart disease. When a person wakes up from such dreams, he already consciously experiences fear of possible death.

Let us give an example of the symbolization in a dream of thoughts concerning one's own death, which was reported to me by the relatives of a woman who died at the age of 83. Approximately 2 months before her death, she had the following dream: her sister, who had died a few months ago, appears and says to her: “I received a land plot and built good house. I will build for you too. Come to me, let's live together."

After 2 months, she had a stroke of the left hemisphere of the brain and right-sided paralysis of the body, and after 3 days she, suffering wordlessly, dies. It is also said that on the eve of the day when the stroke occurred, remembering the deceased sister, she said: “I ask God for death in three days, so as not to suffer like my sister.” And in fact, exactly three days passed from the moment of the stroke to death, while her sister suffered for a long time and died in agony. This dream and other facts testify to this woman's faith in, where, according to her ideas, people also receive land plots and build houses.

It is possible to assume that a seriously ill person, consciously reflecting on his imminent death, thereby supplies his subconscious with material used for the formation of dreams. And in dreams, as usual, each thought is presented mainly in the form of visual scenes and actions performed in them. And now dream images appear, which are interpreted as anticipations.

From this point of view, the dream of the talented Armenian poet Petros Duryan, who died in his youth on January 21, 1872, is of interest. He saw the dream in question three days before his death, and in it he foresaw his own death. It is said that he saw in a dream the following: three priests appear and invite him to the wedding. Already on his deathbed, smiling sadly, he explains the meaning of what he saw: this wedding will take place there, in heaven. Interestingly, three priests attended his funeral.

As we can see, anticipating his death, the poet also saw in his imagination his funeral, which, symbolized, appeared in a dream in the form of a “heavenly wedding”. The dream, in which there was a prediction of the death of P. Duryan, was also seen by his brother Mihran.

Let us give another example of the prediction of death. A young woman of 30, G.A., one day in April 1987, saw in a dream that her maternal grandmother (already deceased) was coming to their house. G. A. meets her at the entrance to the house, where she went down the stairs. The deceased says: “I am going to Aunt Lida” (this is the other daughter of the deceased). Grandma looked the way she did in real life. At least at the entrance, in the semi-darkness, G. A. did not notice anything special and unusual in her. In the dream G.A. had no doubt that her grandmother was alive.

After 2-3 days G.A. found out that her aunt Lida was in the hospital and had been diagnosed with cancer, an incurable disease. She passed away a month later.

It can be said that G.A. foresaw the death of her aunt. The late grandmother did not want to enter their house, she went to the one who should die. G. A. claims that the grandmother died 8–9 years ago and in last years she never saw her in her dreams. It wasn't until after her death that she saw her several times in her dreams, and always in her apartment. Therefore, we can conclude that the unexpected appearance of the grandmother in G.A.'s dream had a special meaning: it foreshadowed the death of an aunt.

Finally, there is an interesting historical example in which a person's prediction of his own death is combined with the prediction of his own death in the dream of another. Frank Edwards wrote: “... dreams often lead to surprising results - to events, the sequence of which coincides surprisingly with the sequence of a dream. This sequence of dreams is so close in content to the actual event that the dream itself becomes, in fact, a foresight.

One morning in 1812, the Prime Minister of England, Spencer Perceval, told his family about a dream that he had had at night and greatly disturbed him. In the dream, he was walking through the foyer of the House of Commons when he suddenly ran into a madman brandishing a pistol. The man was wearing a dark green overcoat with shiny brass buttons. Without warning, he pointed his pistol at the prime minister and fired. Then everything darkened in his eyes, which could mean, Perceval decided that he had been killed.

An exceptionally strange incident happened to Mr. John Williams, who had exactly the same dream as Spencer Perceval, but only 7 days earlier.

May 3, 1812 - Williams was at his estate at Redruth, Cornwall. He had little interest in politics, but that night he dreamed that he was in the dressing room of the House of Commons when a small man in a dark green coat drew a pistol and shot another man in the chest. The man hit by a bullet fell and soon died. When Williams asked who was killed, he was told that Prime Minister Spencer Perceval had been shot.

Waking up, Williams told his wife about the nightmare. Then he went back to sleep and again saw this terrible dream. Williams woke up again, but shortly before dawn he dozed off and had a third obsessive dream.

This excited him to such an extent that he told his friends about everything. Shouldn't he go to London to warn the prime minister? Maybe send a letter and tell about disturbing dream? Friends laughed that he attached such importance to nonsense, and Williams waved his hand and did nothing.

Williams had a dream three times on the night of May 3-4. Perceval had the same dream from 10 to 11 May. When the Prime Minister told his dream at home, everyone began to ask him not to go to the session of Parliament. But he felt that his presence in Parliament was necessary, and that it would be difficult to justify his absence with such a trifle as a dream, however disturbing.

As Prime Minister Perceval was walking through the foyer of the House of Commons on the morning of May 11, 1812, an unshaven man with tousled hair, whom he had never seen before, stepped out from behind a column and shot him. The killer turned out to be a madman who imagined that he had serious claims against the government. He was wearing a dark green overcoat with shiny brass buttons.

This example, of course, also belongs to the category of parapsychological phenomena. Both Perceval himself and Williams somehow perceived in advance the thoughts and intentions of a mentally ill person who was about to commit murder. But how, with the help of what mechanisms - it is currently difficult to say.

In order to answer the main question that this article covers, namely “what dreams of death”, it is necessary to determine what sleep and dreams are.

The main scientific definition that exists in modern world: sleep is a special natural physiological process of being in a state with minimal brain activity and low reaction to the world around. It is not unique to humans. There are two main phases of sleep: REM sleep and non-REM sleep. It is not worth delving into this, let's leave it to the scientists.

Each person, in order to relax, goes to bed, during sleep, almost everyone sees dreams. This applies to both people and animals. Dreams can carry both positive emotions (after such a dream, a person wakes up rested, full of energy, joyful), and negative (after waking up, a person feels excitement, nervousness and even fear).

In a dream, a person spends one third of his life, so many people believe that sleep is just another reality where ordinary life takes place.

Origin of dreams

Why do we dream about something, where do dreams come from, can dreams come true - no one has given answers to these and other questions. The origin of dreams is a curious phenomenon, a riddle for scientists, which they are not yet able to solve. Only fifty-five years ago, the study of brain activity during sleep began, so we can conclude that scientists who study sleep and the activity of the body during sleep still have everything ahead, and soon this riddle will be solved. In the meantime, we will have to rely on small discoveries in this area and use the interpretation of the dreams of our ancestors.

Prophetic dreams

Do dreams come true? This is one of the questions that has been troubling humanity since ancient times.

According to a survey conducted in 2013, 41% of people have seen prophetic dreams, that is, those that came true in real life after some time.

Most scientists who study this issue are skeptical about the fact that some people's dreams come true. They claim that the dream that allegedly came true is just a coincidence. A person is so excited by a dream that he himself looks for coincidences and draws parallels with the events taking place around him.

There is an opinion that almost all scientists adhere to: sleep is just a visual representation of the work of our nervous system. If the dreams are calm and positive, the nervous system is in order, but if the dreams are dark, negative and repeated several times over a certain period of time, then something does not give the person peace of mind. This may be a quarrel with a loved one, a bad deed, resentment, etc. Or this is how the body gives signals about the disease. Perhaps the most terrible dreams that everyone had were dreams about their death or the death of a loved one.
