7 commandments of God Orthodoxy. Ten Commandments of God in Orthodoxy. Recreation and entertainment

When creating man, God provided him with an inner spiritual power, which is called conscience, or the inner law of God. This inner voice tells a person what is good and what is bad, what is fair and what is unfair. Conscience makes a person do good and avoid evil.

The spiritual strength of a person, that is, conscience, is connected with the forces of the soul: mind, heart and will. From the time of the fall of man, his mind, heart and will were darkened, and therefore the voice of conscience turned out to be weak. And if a person does not develop spiritual strength in himself, then the voice of conscience can gradually fade away and die.

Therefore, the Lord gave us an external law - commandments, so that we could always guard our conscience. The main ten commandments were inscribed by God on two stone tablets in Old Testament through the prophet Moses. In the New Testament, the Lord Jesus Christ deepened and exalted these rules and said that He did not come to break the law, but to fulfill (or complete) (Matt. 5:17).

The Savior taught to fulfill these commandments not only in deed, but also in thoughts and desires, demanding purity of heart from his followers.

1. I am the Lord your God; May you have no other gods but Me.

2. Do not make for yourself an idol and any image of what is in heaven above, and on the earth below, and in the water below the earth; do not worship or serve them.

3. Do not pronounce the name of the Lord your God in vain (in vain).

4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy: work six days and do all your work in them, but the seventh day of rest, Saturday, let it be dedicated to the Lord your God.

5. Honor your father and your mother, so that it will be good for you and that you will be long-lived on earth.

6. Don't kill.

7. Do not commit adultery.

8. Don't steal.

9. Do not bear false witness against your neighbor.

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor thy neighbor's house, nor his field, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that thy neighbor has.

The first four commandments contain love for God: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." The last six are love for your neighbor: "Love your neighbor as yourself." All the law and the prophets rest on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:37-40).

1. I am the Lord your God; May you have no other gods but Me.

With the first commandment, the Lord God points us to Himself as the source of all blessings. The Lord inspires us to know and honor Him — the One true God. And no one else to give divine veneration.

To know christian god, you need to study the Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition (interpretations of the holy fathers and teachers Orthodox Church). The Holy Fathers explain the truths of faith and the paths of spiritual life indicated in Scripture. Without Tradition, a correct understanding of Scripture is impossible.

Also, for the knowledge of God, we must visit the temple, since all Divine services clearly teach about God and His deeds. In our technological age, you can listen to the sermons of Orthodox pastors not only in churches, but also at home in audio or video recordings.

The worship of God must be internal and external, since our soul is closely connected with the body. Inner Worship is:

  • sincere faith in God
  • everlasting memory of him
  • hope or hope in Him
  • love, reverence and obedience to God, that is, trust in His providence for us, the fulfillment of the commandments
  • glorification and thanksgiving to the Lord as our Creator, Provider and Savior
  • Prayer is the movement of the Spirit towards God.

External Worship is:

  • Outdoor prayer with sign of the cross, belt or bows to the ground in front of the holy icons. When inner prayer unites with outer prayer, then it reaches its goal more quickly.
  • Fearless confession of God in front of everyone, even if you had to suffer and die for it.

We must honor the angels and saints of God, but not as God, but as His servants, our helpers and prayer books before Him. The Virgin Mary is to be venerated as the Mother of God.

Sins against the first commandment:

Irreligion, polytheism, unbelief, heresy, schism, apostasy, despair, magic, superstition, laziness in prayer and charitable deeds, love for the creature more than for God, philanthropy, arrogance, human reliance.

2. Do not make for yourself an idol and any image of what is in heaven above, and on the earth below, and in the water below the earth; do not worship or serve them.

Man is a spiritual being and is forced to deify something. If a person does not believe in God - the Creator, then he deifies things or created beings - idols. But it is even worse when a person deifies the work of his hands and his mind. What a person gives his heart and all his thoughts, that is his god.

If, for example, a person gives his heart and all his thoughts to the family and does not know another god, then the family is god for him. It is a disease of the soul of one kind. If a person gives himself entirely to covetousness, then money for him is a deity. This is a disease of the soul of a different kind. If a person desires glory, praise, primacy, exaltation above other people and considers himself the best, then he is his own god, to whom he sacrifices everything. This is a disease of the soul of the third kind.

Pop stars, cinema stars, sports stars, etc. can be idols. Among Christians, instead of pagan idolatry, there is a more subtle one: serving sinful passions, such as, for example, love of money, gluttony, drunkenness, vanity, pride, etc.

Worship of holy icons (translated from Greek - images) does not contradict the second commandment. Praying before the icon of the Savior, we pray not to matter, but to the One Who is depicted on it. When you see an image of a loved one (for example, a photograph), it is much easier to remember him. Likewise, when we pray before the icons Holy Mother of God and saints, we ascend with our minds to them ourselves.

The name of God must be pronounced with fear and reverence in prayer, in teaching about God, in pious conversations, in a legal oath or oath.

The third commandment forbids sins arising from a frivolous and irreverent attitude towards God:

Murmuring against God (complaints about His Providence); inattentive prayer; blasphemy (impudent words against God); blasphemy (disrespect or mockery of sacred objects); violation of the vows given to God; false oath; perjury.

4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy: work six days and do all your work in them, and dedicate the seventh day - the day of rest (Saturday) to the Lord your God.

God created the world in six days, and on the seventh day he rested and called it Saturday, which means rest. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it (Ex. 20:8-11).

Day Christ's Resurrection- this is the day about which the Lord predicted: "And the day will be glorious for them, in which I will glorify myself" (Ezek. 39:13). When the sun rises, the stars are no longer visible. Likewise, the Sabbath was not formally abolished, but it faded in the light of the Resurrection of Christ. The Lord established Sunday as a greater day than the Sabbath.

The veneration of the Sabbath in Orthodoxy has been rethought and transferred to a more spiritual level. The Lord Jesus Christ freed us from the Old Testament understanding of the Sabbath, which concerned only external things and actions: "The Sabbath is for a man, and not a man for the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27). “You can do good on the Sabbath” (Mark 3:4).

Saturday in Orthodoxy means the totality of all external church prescriptions (canons): holidays, fasts (see), Divine services, acceptance of the sacraments, prayer rules and others. These canons were established by the holy fathers as an aid to the correct Christian life as an aid to the fulfillment of the commandments.

But the holy fathers warn that if a person fulfills all church prescriptions (that is, Saturday) without spiritual achievement according to the Gospel (as interpreted by the holy fathers), then this may turn out to be more harmful for him than useful. This can lead to the development of conceit, pride, vanity (pharisaism).

Sabbath day is revered in Orthodoxy by the fact that there is no strict fast on Saturday (just like on Sunday); on Saturday, according to a special rite, a liturgy is performed; on this day the cycle of the Liturgical Week ends. In Orthodox countries, Saturday is a non-working day, like Sunday.

After His death on the Cross, Jesus Christ descended into hell on Saturday and brought out of it all the righteous who believed in Him. Therefore, in the Orthodox Church, Saturday is considered a memorial day. And in the days of the universal parent Saturdays The Church prays for all the deceased Orthodox Christians.

Sins against the fourth commandment:

laziness works on weekdays; not attending Sundays and holiday services; conversations or absent-mindedness at services; being late for God's services; violation of posts; drunkenness and revelry on holidays; carelessness about the salvation of one's soul; mercilessness to the poor, sick, prisoners, etc.

5. Honor your father and your mother, so that it will be good for you and that you will be long-lived on earth.

The fifth commandment obliges us to honor our parents. This means: to show them respect and love, to fulfill their good advice and instructions, to help them in their labors, to take care of them in need, in old age and in illness, to pray to God for them during life and after death.

This commandment gives the promise of longevity and earthly happiness to those who fulfill it. This can be seen from sacred history. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. Canaan was one of the sons of Ham. When Noah came out of the ark, he planted a vineyard, drank wine and became drunk, and lay naked in his tent. Ham, seeing this, laughed at his father and told his brothers. Shem and Japheth, not looking at their father's nakedness, covered him with clothes.

Upon learning of this, Noah cursed Canaan, the son of Hamov, and said that he would be a slave of his brothers' servants. Then Noah said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem, Canaan shall be his servant. May God expand Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan be his servant.” (Gen.9;18-27)

For Shem and Japheth, who honored their father, and their descendants, the promise of prosperity on earth was fulfilled. And for Ham, who mocked his father, and his descendants, a curse was fulfilled: the Canaanites were slaves of the Jews (Semites), and the Negroes (Hamites) were slaves of the white race (Japhetites).

Together with our parents, we must honor our spiritual father and all persons of spiritual dignity who teach us the faith and pray for us; teachers, educators and benefactors; civilian commanders who protect us from enemies and criminals; and in general all the elders, and especially the elderly.

You need to obey your parents and superiors as long as their orders do not contradict the will of God, that is, His commandments, because for a Christian no one in the world can be greater than God. (Acts 4:19)

6. Don't kill.

The 6th commandment obliges us to protect our lives and the lives of others. God created man in His own image and likeness. And the murderer encroaches on the image and gift of the Creator. The Savior Jesus Christ gave this commandment a deeper spiritual meaning: that we be merciful and perfect, like our Heavenly Father.

The Lord equates to a murderer anyone who is angry with “his brother in vain”, who curses and humiliates him. (Matthew 5:22). “Everyone who hates his neighbor is a murderer” (John 3:15). This commandment forbids all paths leading to murder:

anger, rage, jealousy, hatred, envy, anger, slander, quarrels, fights, irritability, remembrance, malice, revenge, slander, condemnation, etc.

Cain killed his brother Abel out of spiritual envy, because the Lord looked upon Abel and his gift, but did not look upon Cain and his gift (Gen. 4:3-8). Joseph's brothers envied him because his father loved him more than they did and gave him colored clothes, and wanted to kill him (Gen. 37:18).

A person is guilty of murder even when he only contributed to it or did nothing: for example, when someone does not call a doctor; when he does not help the needy or the sick; does not warn of danger; when the judge condemns the obviously innocent; when someone exhausts his subordinates with hard work or does not pay their wages; who, by order or advice, helps others to commit murder.

In addition to bodily murder, there is a more terrible, spiritual murder - temptation. If someone, by his example or persuasion, tempts his neighbor into unbelief or onto the path of a vicious life, he becomes a spiritual killer. Woe to that person through whom temptation comes (Matthew 18:6-7).

Most terrible sin against the sixth commandment - suicide, because it deprives a person of the opportunity to repent. Despair leads to suicide, grumbling against God, rebellion against God's providence. Slow suicide is committed by drug addicts, drunkards, smokers. Murder also includes the terrible sin of abortion.

Jesus Christ teaches what to do in order not to sin against the sixth commandment: do not return evil for evil, help the sick, the poor and the needy, forgive insults and offend no one, reconcile with those who are angry, love enemies. “Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you…” (Matthew 5:43-47).

The Church does not consider the killing of enemies in war to be a private sin of a person. Defending the Fatherland, the warrior shows love for his neighbor and is ready to "lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13).

7. Do not commit adultery.

The seventh commandment commands the unmarried to observe chastity and purity in deeds, words, thoughts and desires, and the married to keep mutual fidelity and love. To do this, you need to avoid what can excite impure feelings: foul language, voluptuous conversations and reading and films, drunkenness. It is necessary to preserve the senses, especially sight, hearing and touch. It is necessary to reject prodigal thoughts and dreams. It is good to serve the sick and crippled, to remember death and hell.

The Lord says: “Whoever looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). The apostle says: “Do not be deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor malakis, nor homosexuals ... They will not inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6: 9-10). “Whoever divorces his wife except for the guilt of fornication gives her a reason to commit adultery” (Matthew 5:32).

8. Don't steal.

The eighth commandment forbids the appropriation of another's property in any way. Types of theft:

  • Theft is the secret theft of someone else's things.
  • Robbery, racketeering - the forcible taking of someone else's property.
  • Bribery, corruption - bribery or venality of officials.
  • Parasitism is life at the expense of others.
  • Extortion - when they profit from someone else's misfortune, do not pay the workers.
  • Deception, fraud - appropriation of someone else's property by cunning, evasion of paying a debt or tax, measuring and weighing, hiding a found thing.

Violation of the eighth commandment is associated with the passion of covetousness, or the love of money: this is an addiction to money and any property, a desire to get rich, avarice, greed, self-interest, unbelief and distrust in God's providence. The Apostle Paul calls covetousness idolatry (Col. 3:5).

Only hope in God and His providence for us can save us from covetousness: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all this will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). This means that the Lord promises to give everything necessary for life to those who believe in Him. We must cultivate honesty and selflessness.

“No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth) (Mt. 6:24). The Lord calls us not to collect treasures on earth, where they are destroyed by moths and thieves, but to collect treasures in Heaven (to show mercy to those in need). "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:19-21).

9. Do not bear false witness against your neighbor.

The ninth commandment forbids lying and falsely testifying against one's neighbor secretly, openly, and in court. The most dangerous lie is perjury in court, because here a person swears by the name of God. A false witness not only causes moral and material damage to the accused person, but much more harms his soul: he corrupts and darkens his soul.

The Gospel says that the lie is from the evil one and that he (the devil) is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44). And the truth is God, for Christ Himself says: “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6).

There are three different kind lies:

  • thought
  • word,
  • life itself.

Thought lies one who believes his thoughts, his opinions and suspects someone. From this come curiosity, peeping, eavesdropping, slander, condemnation, gossip, slander, false denunciations. If the devil inspires us with evil thoughts, then they must immediately be turned into good ones.

In a word, he lies who is afraid that he will be scolded or reproached for a misconduct, and therefore justifies himself and does not want to humble himself, that is, admit his guilt (this lie is from vanity). Or if he desires something, he does not say "I desire it", but perverts his words and lies until he satisfies his desire (this lie is from voluptuousness). Or he lies for the sake of gain, deceives (this lie is from the love of money). Such a person is never believed, even when he tells the truth.

He lies with his life who, being evil, pretends to be kind, or, being a fornicator, pretends to be temperate, etc. Such a person lies either in order to cover his shame and not humble himself, or in order to seduce someone. If Satan himself assumes the form of an angel of light, then his servants also assume the form of servants of righteousness. (2 Cor. 11; 14-15). The life of such a person is dual and crafty, different inside and out.

10. Do not covet all that your neighbor has.

The tenth commandment forbids envy - selfish thoughts and desires to possess what belongs to one's neighbor, because evil desires and thoughts give rise to evil deeds:

“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, thefts, false witness, blasphemies - these defile a person” (Matthew 15:19).

Envy is one of the worst evils. “Death entered the world through the envy of the devil, and those who belong to his lot are testing it” (Prim. Sol. 2:24). Usually envy is combined with a feeling of gloating and is associated with another passion - vanity, ambition or greed, greed.

Therefore, if you conquer ambition in yourself, you will not envy your neighbor, who has succeeded more than you. And if you conquer the love of money, you will not envy the rich. For envy comes from a selfish desire for fame and fortune.

The passion of envy feeds on vicious tricks against the opponent. Therefore, in order to fight envy, a Christian must stop himself at any desire to speak biasedly about his neighbor out of envy or malice. It is necessary to preserve the purity of the heart from all attachments to the earthly. We must be content with what we have and thank God for it. We must rejoice for the successes and wealth of our neighbors, rejoice, and not envy.

A Brief Interpretation of God's Commandments for Children

The 10 commandments of God can be explained to children in this way:

1. I am the Lord thy God: thou shalt have no other gods but me.

This means that there is only one God, and you must believe in Him with all your soul, love and obey Him more than anything in the world, just as you love and listen to your father and mother. May the Lord be the meaning of your whole life, govern and rule in it. Do not forget that God watches over all your actions, desires and thoughts. Therefore, pray to Him that He will not let you sin.

2. Do not make idols for yourself, do not worship and do not serve them.

Do not worship false gods - idols, for example, pop stars, cinema, sports. Do not believe in astrology and that our fate depends on the stars. Worship only the only God, although there are a lot of idols on earth. Trust in God, not people.

3. Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

Always pronounce the name of God with attention and reverence in prayer or in pious conversations about God. When you pronounce the word "Lord", you kind of pick up the phone and dial the number of God, and on the other end the Lord says to you, "I'm listening." Therefore, in vain do not disturb God in empty talk.

4. Work for six days and do all your works in them, and the seventh day of the feast - dedicate it to the Lord your God.

Study diligently at school for six days, do your homework and help your parents. It is also necessary to pray and fulfill the commandments these days. But the seventh, Sunday, especially dedicate to God: attend Divine services and Sunday school learn God's wisdom. And with God you will always be happy and comforted.

5. Honor your father and your mother, so that you may be well and that your days on earth may be long.

Treat your dad and mom with respect, listen to them and help them. While you are small, your parents take care of you. And when you grow up and your parents get old, then you will have to take care of them. If you do this, the Lord promises you a happy and long life on earth. You also need to respect all elders.

6. Don't kill.

People can be killed not only with weapons, but with a rude word, impudent behavior. Never offend the younger ones and try to protect the one who is offended. Do not tease your comrades and do not give them nicknames, but call them by name. Be polite to all people. Don't hurt animals either.

7. Do not commit adultery.

While you are small, be a faithful and devoted friend, help a friend in need. Do not betray and do not leave a friend in trouble. And when you grow up and get married, be faithful to your soul mate, do not change your love. Ask God for help to keep your heart pure.

8. Don't steal.

Do not take other people's things without permission. The one who took a thing from people in a dishonest way, that person became a thief, this will become known to everyone. Let not immediately, not now, but everyone will know this secret, God will show the whole world, obviously he will reward for deceit.

If you were given a thing (for example, a book) for a while, give it back on time. If you find something on the street, try to find the owner of the thing, write an announcement about the find. If you find a phone, call someone in contacts and report it. Take care of honor from a young age!

9. Do not lie, do not bear false witness.

Sometimes you may think that lying will help you avoid punishment or trouble. But sooner or later, any deception will be revealed and the secret will become clear. If you lie, you will lose the trust of loved ones and God's mercy. Do not be afraid to tell the truth in any case, so that your conscience does not torment you.

Also, you can not slander and defame innocent people. Try to see in your neighbor not bad qualities, but good and good. To do this, ask God's help.

10. Do not desire anything that your neighbor has.

God bestows each person in his own way: someone with wealth, someone with strength or wisdom, and someone with other talents. Do not envy the talents of others, but seek and develop your own talents and be grateful to God for them. Rejoice not only in what you have, but also in what your neighbor has, and you will be happy.

7 deadly sins in Christianity - list and interpretation

Sins are called mortal because they distance a person from God and His grace, and this is the death of the soul. Without a gracious connection with its Creator, the soul cannot experience spiritual joy and dies. But even for such people there is a possibility of salvation if they resort to repentance and turn to God for help.

Mortal sins that make a person guilty of eternal death or perdition:

1. Gluttony, gluttony, drunkenness

Gluttony, combined with a passion for various feasts, following the example of the gospel rich man: his amusements consisted in drunkenness, gluttony, debauchery; he was no better than a pig wallowing in the mud.

The rich man never had mercy on the poor Lazarus and did not give him anything, but sent everything into his insatiable womb. After death, the rich man went to hell, and Lazarus went to the bosom of Abraham. “Judgment is without mercy to him who has not shown mercy” (James 2:13). Such gluttony is idolatry.

2. Voluptuousness

Passionate desire for carnal pleasures, lust, debauchery, fornication. A life following the example of the prodigal son, who squandered all his father's inheritance on a dissolute life. Fornication is dangerous because a person loses the ability to love. As a result of the sins of fornication, a whole nation degenerates. For such sins, the Lord destroyed entire cities and empires, for example, Sodom and Gomorrah, the Roman Empire.

3. Greed

Greed is the highest degree of love of money, Judas greed for money, entailing theft, robbery, cruelty and all sorts of unrighteous acquisitions. An insatiable desire to have more and more. It does not give you the opportunity to think about God, because this sin is idolatry. Such a person is a slave of mammon.

4. Anger

Anger is a violent passion, a feeling of strong indignation and indignation, easily infuriates a person and makes the soul brutal. If a person in a fit of anger sees himself in a mirror, he will be horrified. But anger darkens the soul more than the face. This sin often breeds murder.

If the passion of anger dominates a person for a long time, then it often turns into hatred - the most disgusting sin, since he who hates his brother is a murderer (1 John 3:15). Irreconcilable anger and hatred brings terrible murders, such as, for example, Herod, who beat the Bethlehem babies.

5. Envy

Envy, leading to all kinds of atrocities against neighbors. Envy is the desire for someone else's wealth, someone else's fame, or someone else's talents. This sin, combined with a disgusting sense of gloating, becomes the cause of cruelty and violence. Examples of such envy: Cain killed his brother Abel; the Pharisees out of envy betrayed the Savior to be crucified; Salieri poisoned Mozart.

6. Despondency, despair

Laziness and idleness, complete neglect of repentance until the end of life, as in the days of Noah. Today, psychiatrists call discouragement depression and the plague of our time. Despondency is the loss of cheerfulness, the loss of hope in God and His providence for us. Longing penetrates the soul, a feeling of loneliness, abandoned by everyone.

Often this mental illness results in hard drinking, irritability, anger, loss of the meaning of life. The danger of such a state is that it can lead a person to hopelessness, despair and suicide.

7. Pride

Pride, exalted above all, demanding worship, pride to self-adoration, when a person becomes an idol for himself. For example, the old woman from Pushkin's fairy tale about the golden fish. The old woman wanted to become the mistress of the sea, so that the fish would be on her parcels. (The fish here acts as God).

9 commandments of the New Testament (commandments of beatitude)

The Beatitudes were given by Jesus Christ himself. Here I will briefly write these commandments, and in the next article I will give their detailed interpretation.

  1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  2. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
  3. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
  4. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
  5. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
  6. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
  7. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
  8. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  9. Blessed are you when they reproach you and persecute you and slander you in every way unrighteously for me. Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in Heaven: so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Do not despair, man, even if you have fallen into mortal sins and cannot free yourself from your passions that torment and rape you. The Lord does not want you to die.

The Lord God says: “I do not want the death of the sinner, but that the sinner turn from his way and be alive. Turn, turn from your evil ways; why should you die?" (Ezek.33;11). Call on God for help and He will help you!

Once the Lord gave Moses commandments on how to live in order to inherit the kingdom of heaven. They began to be used in Christianity with some changes, becoming the basis of the divine doctrine of salvation. are considered the basis of the life of a Christian, by which one must navigate the world. This is what the Lord called people who want to serve him to live in peace and in harmony with themselves, in harmony with the world around them.

Commandments of Moses

On Mount Sinai, the Lord gave the 10 commandments to the Jewish people. They formed the basis of both the Old and New Testaments. However, there were some changes in the original version. For example, the Jews still consider Sabbath a sacred day - in Israel, even shops do not work at this time until sunset. Christians consider the day of the resurrection of Christ sacred, but the essence of the commandments themselves is preserved. Here are 10 commandments in Russian that become guidelines for a Christian even in modern world.

1. There will be no gods for you other than me. This commandment is directed against polytheism and those who doubt the faith and correctness of the teachings of Christ. The church even has such a concept as spiritual fornication, the meaning of which means restlessness (fornication and the word "get lost" have the same root). Therefore, you just need to believe in Christ and not try to follow several religions, teachings, or try to simultaneously practice black magic and go to the temple.

2. Do not make yourself an idol. Continuation of commandment 1. Do not rely too much on material values, talismans or specific people, as this is the path to disappointment and mental loss. Moreover, it is impossible to deify someone specific. For example, for an inexperienced girl, a young man may seem almost like a god, and then after falling in love, severe disappointment will come. And here again the 10 commandments of God in Russian become a beacon. In order not to be disappointed in life and not to lose faith, the initial feeling of love for God, one cannot deify objects or other people, no matter how attractive they may seem.

3. It is impossible to pronounce the name of the Lord in vain. This can bring trouble on yourself.

4. Remember the Sabbath. In Christianity, Sunday is considered a holy day, so you need to work for 6 days, and take a break at 7, if possible. In the modern world, it is not always possible to fulfill this commandment - after all, you can’t explain to your boss that you can’t work on Sunday. However, in most situations, Sunday is considered a public holiday. Therefore, it is best to spend it in prayer and spiritual meditation.

5. Honor your father and mother. This commandment requires clarification: do not offend, try to make them feel good, listen to their advice, if they are reasonable. Unfortunately, for centuries, veneration was understood as the slavish acceptance of someone else's opinion, which broke more than one fate. It is for this reason that today this commandment is reluctantly observed in the modern world. Moreover, parents have different ideas about what is good and bad, and it is not always worth following their advice. However, it is also impossible to offend parents.

6. You can not kill. Any killing is considered a very serious sin, both human and animal.

7. Do not commit adultery. Usually, this word is understood as cheating on a spouse and relationships outside of marriage, but the meaning of this word is wider. Adultery is translated as an act against love, a betrayal of love. Therefore, it is also understood as the failure to fulfill a promise, the betrayal of a friend's secrets, telling other people what was a secret. That is, adultery implies any act that violates love.

8. Don't steal.

9. Do not tell lies, do not slander anyone.

10. Don't be jealous.

It is these commandments that Christian doctrine. Christ also gave a new commandment, which unites the previous ones: “love one another, love your enemies…”. It sums up everything that was described earlier. But there are also mortal sins that necessarily require repentance to the priest.

7 Sins

If a person commits them, be sure to say about it in confession and try not to repeat it again.

They are considered the spiritual guides of a Christian. But not only they contribute to the salvation of man. The teachings and books of the holy fathers also help to become a support and come to one's own repentance, even if it is sometimes difficult to resist not to commit some kind of sin or to do something contrary to the commandments of God.

The commandments of God were given in the Old Testament to the prophet Moses. Today they have been interpreted and explained more than once by the Church and by Christ Himself in the Gospel: after all, the Lord Jesus concluded New Testament with a person, which means that he changed the meaning of some commandments (for example, about honoring the Sabbath: the Jews always kept peace on this day, and the Lord said that you need to help people too). The very names of mortal sins are also explanations of how the crime of this or that commandment is called.

There are seven mortals, and ten commandments, because not all commandments are forbidding, and sin is the failure to comply with a certain prohibition.

The Ten Commandments are also called the Decalogue (translated into Latin).

We note that by setting prohibitions, God takes care of our spiritual health so that we do not damage the spirit and soul, do not perish for eternal life. The commandments allow us to live in harmony with ourselves, other people, the world, and with the Creator Himself.

The 10 commandments of God in Russian, in the original from the Bible, can be explained as follows:

The first three commandments tell us how to relate to God: to worship only Him, not to believe in the gods of other religions, pagan gods, not to worship dark and unknown spirits. Do not make idols, that is, do not worship anything earthly as God. Do not call on the Name of God simply in conversation, do not break oaths in the face of God:

1. I am the Lord your God... you shall have no other gods before me. 2. Do not make yourself an idol ... Do not worship them and do not serve them ... 3. Do not pronounce the name of the Lord your God in vain.

The fourth commandment calls to give part of the time to serve God and neighbor, to work with diligence and diligence. Not to be lazy, but also not to indulge in revelry, fun with oblivion of others and excesses.

4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Work six days, and do all your work; and the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God...

The fifth commandment is to treat with respect, take care of your parents financially and spiritually, give them love and support, at least pray to God for them if you have a difficult relationship.

5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

The sixth commandment forbids encroachment on the life of other people, and on one's own; prohibits harming the health of another, only for the purpose of self-defense; says that a person is also guilty if he did not stop the murder. Suicide is also a terrible sin; we give what is given to us by God and others - life, leaving our loved ones and friends in terrible grief, dooming our soul to eternal torment.

6. Don't kill.

The seventh commandment forbids sexual relations outside of marriage. The Lord does not bless shamelessness, viewing frank and pornographic visual materials, watching your thoughts and feelings. It is especially sinful because of one's lust to destroy an already existing family, betraying a person who has become close.

7. Do not commit adultery.

With the Eighth Commandment, the Lord instructs us that we must not only take someone else's property, but, what is important for the modern world, shortchange and “weigh”, make fraudulent transactions, and take bribes.

8. Don't steal.

The ninth commandment forbids all lies and deceit. Often, people who have recently come to church ask if it is necessary to always tell the truth in all questions. Of course, the commandment must be carried out reasonably. If you keep someone else's secret or it is inconvenient to tell the truth, honestly say that you cannot answer the question now for a number of reasons. And, of course, this commandment forbids slander and intrigue.

9. Do not bear false witness against your neighbor.

With the tenth commandment, God blesses us to rejoice in what we have, not to envy and not to grumble at the arrangement of our life and the life of our neighbor.

10. Do not covet your neighbor's house; do not desire your neighbor's wife... anything that your neighbor has.

In addition to the 10 commandments, the Church names 7 mortal sins, partially indicated in the Commandments. The name “mortal” means that the commission of this crime, and especially the habit of it, is a passion (for example, a person did not just have sexual intercourse outside the family, but had it for a long time; he did not just get angry, but does it regularly and does not fight with himself ) leads to the death of the soul, its irreversible change. This means that if a person does not confess his sins in earthly life to a priest in the Sacrament of Confession, they will grow into his soul, become a kind of spiritual drug. After death, not so much God's punishment as the person himself will be forced to send to hell - where his affairs lead.

List of 7 deadly sins

    • Pride;
    • Envy;
    • Anger;
    • Laziness;
    • Greed (greed, adoration of money);
    • Gluttony (constant addiction to certain tasty food, adoration of it);
    • Fornication and adultery (sex before marriage and adultery in marriage).

You can often hear that the worst sin is pride. They say so because pride covers their eyes, it seems to us that we have no sins, and if we did something, then this is an accident. Of course, this is absolutely not true. You need to understand that people are weak, that in the modern world we devote too little time to God, the Church and the perfection of our souls with virtues, and therefore we can be guilty of very many sins even through ignorance and carelessness. It is important to be able to weed it out of the soul in time, like weeds, with a confession.

Sacrament of Confession - cleansing from all mistakes and sins

During Confession, a person names his sins to the priest - but, as it is said in the prayer before confession, which the priest will read, this is a confession to Christ Himself, and the priest is only a servant of God who visibly gives His grace. We receive forgiveness from the Lord: His words are preserved in the Gospel, by which Christ gives to the apostles, and through them to the priests, their successors, the power to forgive sins: “Receive the Holy Spirit. To whom you forgive sins, they will be forgiven; on whom you leave, on that they will remain.”

In Confession we receive the forgiveness of all the sins that we have named and those that we have forgotten. In no case should you hide sins! If you are ashamed, name the sins, among others, briefly.

Confession, despite the fact that many Orthodox people they confess once or twice a week, that is, quite often, they call it the second baptism. During Baptism, a person is cleansed from original sin by the grace of Christ, who accepted the Crucifixion for the sake of delivering all people from sins. And during repentance at confession, we get rid of new sins that we have committed throughout our life path.

Rules for preparing for confession: what sins should be mentioned at confession

Preparing for confession is basically reflecting on your life and repentance, that is, admitting that certain things you have done are sins. Before Confession:

    • If you have never confessed, start remembering your life from the age of seven (it was at this time that a child growing up in Orthodox family, according to church tradition, comes to the first confession, that is, he can clearly answer for his actions). Realize what misconducts cause you remorse, because conscience, according to the word of the Holy Fathers, is the voice of God in a person. Think about how you can call these actions, for example: taking sweets saved for a holiday without asking, getting angry and yelling at a friend, leaving a friend in trouble - this is theft, anger and anger, betrayal.
    • Write down all the sins that you remember, realizing your wrong and promising God not to repeat these mistakes.
    • Continue thinking as an adult. In confession, you cannot and should not tell the history of each sin, its name is enough. Remember that many of the things that the modern world encourages are sins: romance or connection with married woman- adultery, sex outside of marriage - fornication, a clever deal where you got a benefit, and gave another low-quality thing - deceit and theft. All this also needs to be written down and promised to God not to sin again.
    • Read Orthodox literature on Confession. An example of such a book is The Experience of Building a Confession by Archimandrite John Krestyankin, a contemporary elder who died in 2006. He knew the sins and sorrows of modern people.
    • A good habit is to review your day on a daily basis. The same advice is usually given by psychologists in order to form an adequate self-esteem of a person. Remember, or rather write down your sins, made by accident or on purpose (mentally ask God to forgive them and promise not to commit again), and your successes - thank God and His help for them.
    • There is a Canon of repentance to the Lord, which you can read standing in front of the icon on the eve of confession. It is also included in the number of prayers that are preparatory to Communion. There are also several Orthodox prayers with a list of sins and repentant words. Through such prayers and penitential canon you will prepare for confession sooner, because it will be easy for you to understand what actions are called sins and what you need to repent of.
    • Here is one of the prayers of repentance - the daily confession of sins, which is read as part of the Orthodox evening prayer rule:

“I confess to You, the One Lord my God and Creator, glorified by all the Holy Trinity, Whom all people worship: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, all my sins that I have committed all the days of my life, which I have sinned every hour, during today and in the past days and nights: deeds, words, thoughts, gluttony, drunkenness, eating in secret from others, idle discussion of people and things, despondency, laziness, disputes, disobedience and deceit of superiors, slander, condemnation, careless and inattentive attitude to affairs and people, pride and selfishness, greed, theft, lies, criminal gain, desire for easy gain, jealousy, envy, anger, remorse, rancor, hatred, bribery or extortion and all my senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, other spiritual and bodily ones, with which I angered You, my God and Creator, and caused harm to my neighbor; pitying all this, I acknowledge my guilt before you, my God, and I repent myself: only, Lord my God, help me, I humbly implore you with tears: forgive me all my sins, according to your mercy, and deliver me from all that I listed in prayer to You, according to Your good will and love for all people. Amen".

You should not look for a special spiritual uplift, strong emotions before and during Confession.

Repentance is:

    • Reconciliation with relatives and friends if you have seriously offended or deceived someone;
    • Understanding that a number of actions you have done intentionally or carelessly and the constant preservation of certain feelings are unrighteous and are sins;
    • A firm intention not to sin anymore, not to repeat them, for example, to legitimize fornication, stop adultery, recover from drunkenness and drug addiction;
    • Faith in the Lord, His mercy and His grace-filled help;
    • Faith that the Sacrament of Confession, by Christ's grace and the power of His death on the Cross, will destroy all your sins.

How is confession and what to do in confession

    • Confession usually takes place half an hour before the start of each Liturgy (you need to find out about its time from the schedule) in any Orthodox church.
    • In the temple you need to be in appropriate clothes: men in trousers and shirts with at least short sleeves (not in shorts and T-shirts), without hats; women in a skirt below the knee and a scarf (kerchief, scarf) - by the way, skirts and scarves can be taken free of charge for the duration of your stay in the temple.
    • For confession, you only need to take a sheet with written down sins (it is needed so as not to forget to name the sins).
    • The priest will go to the place of confession - usually a group of confessors gather there, it is located on the left or right of the altar - and will read the prayers that begin the Sacrament. Then, in some temples, according to tradition, a list of sins is read - in case you have forgotten some sins - the priest calls for repentance for them (those that you have committed) and give your name. This is called a general confession.
    • Then, in turn, you go to the confessional table. The priest can (it depends on the practice) take the sheet of sins from your hands to read it yourself, or then you yourself read aloud. If you want to tell the situation and repent of it in more detail, or if you have a question about this situation, about spiritual life in general, ask it after listing the sins, before remission.
    • After you have completed the dialogue with the priest: simply listed the sins and said: “I repent,” or asked a question, received an answer to it and thanked you, state your name. Then the priest performs absolution: you bend down a little lower (some people kneel), puts an epitrachelion on your head (a piece of embroidered fabric with a slit for the neck, means the pastorship of a priest), reads a short prayer and baptizes your head over the epitrachili.
    • When the priest removes the epitrachelion from your head, you must immediately cross yourself, kiss the Cross first, then the Gospel, which lie in front of you on the confessional lectern (high table).
    • If you are going to Communion, take a blessing from the priest: put your palms in front of him in a “boat”, right to left, say: “Bless to take communion, I was preparing (preparing).” In many churches, priests simply bless everyone after confession: therefore, after kissing the Gospel, look at the priest - whether he calls the next confessor or waits for you to finish kissing and take the blessing.

The sacrament of Communion is a blessing of God and the transformation of man

The most strong prayer- this is any commemoration and stay at the Liturgy. During the Sacrament of the Eucharist (Communion), the whole Church prays for a person.

When preparing bread and wine, which during the Sacrament will become the Body and Blood of Christ, the priest takes a prosphora (small round unleavened bread with the seal of the Cross), cuts a piece in it and says: "Remember, Lord, Thy servants (names) ...". Names are taken from notes, all those praying at the Liturgy and all communicants are commemorated with separate prosphora. All parts of the prosphora become the Body of Christ in the Communion Chalice. This is how people get great power and grace from God.

That is why every person needs to attend the Liturgy from time to time - to submit a note for themselves and loved ones, to partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ - the Body and Blood of the Lord. This is especially important to do in difficult moments of life, despite the lack of time.

May the Lord bless you with His grace!

For our readers: 7 commandments of Christ with a detailed description from various sources.

It is necessary to distinguish between the TEN OLD TESTAMENT COMMANDMENTS given by God to Moses and all the people of Israel and the GOSPEL COMMANDMENTS OF BEATH, of which there are nine. The 10 commandments were given to people through Moses at the dawn of the formation of religion in order to protect them from sin, to warn of danger, while the Christian Commandments of the Beatitudes, described in Christ's Sermon on the Mount, are of a slightly different plan, they concern more spiritual life and development. The Christian commandments are a logical continuation and in no way deny the 10 commandments. Learn more about Christian Commandments.

In this article, we will talk about the ten commandments that are described in the Old Testament, as well as the seven deadly sins.

10 commandments of God - the law, given by God in addition to his internal moral guide - conscience. The Ten Commandments were given by God to Moses, and through him to all mankind on Mount Sinai, when the people of Israel returned from Egyptian captivity to the promised land. The first four commandments regulate the relationship between man and God, the remaining six - the relationship between people. The Ten Commandments are described twice in the Bible: in the twentieth chapter of the book of Exodus, and in the fifth chapter of Deuteronomy.

Ten commandments of God in Russian.

How and when did God give the 10 commandments to Moses?

God gave Moses the ten commandments on Mount Sinai on the 50th day from the start of the Exodus from Egyptian captivity. The situation on Mount Sinai is described in the Bible:

... On the third day, at the onset of morning, there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very strong trumpet sound ... Mount Sinai was all smoking because the Lord descended on it in fire; and smoke from her ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently; and the sound of the trumpet became stronger and stronger…. (Book of Exodus, chapter 19)

God wrote 10 commandments on stone tablets and gave them to Moses. Moses stayed on Mount Sinai for another 40 days, after which he went down to his people. The book of Deuteronomy describes that when he descended, he saw that his people were dancing around the Golden Calf, forgetting about God and violating one of the commandments. Moses, in anger, broke the tablets with the inscribed commandments, but God ordered him to carve new ones to replace the old ones, on which the Lord again inscribed 10 commandments.

10 commandments - interpretation of the commandments.

  1. I am the Lord thy God, and there are no other gods but Me.

According to the first commandment, there is not and cannot be another god than Him. This is the postulate of monotheism. The first commandment says that everything that exists is created by God, lives in God and will return to God. God has no beginning and no end. It is impossible to comprehend it. All the power of man and nature is from God, and there is no power outside the Lord, just as there is no wisdom outside the Lord, and there is no knowledge outside the Lord. In God is the beginning and the end, in Him is all love and kindness.

Man does not need gods except the Lord. If you have two gods, doesn't that mean that one of them is a devil?

Thus, according to the first commandment, the following are considered sinful:

  • atheism;
  • superstition and esotericism;
  • polytheism;
  • magic and sorcery,
  • false interpretation of religion - sects and false teachings
  1. Do not create for yourself an idol and no image; do not worship them and do not serve them.

All power is concentrated in God. Only He can help a person if necessary. A person often turns to intermediaries for help. But if God cannot help a person, is it possible for intermediaries to do this? According to the second commandment, one cannot deify people and things. This will lead to sin or sickness.

In simple words, one cannot worship the creation of the Lord instead of the Lord Himself. The worship of things is akin to paganism and idolatry. At the same time, the veneration of icons is not equated with idolatry. It is believed that worship prayers are directed to God himself, and not to the material from which the icon is made. We turn not to the image, but to the Archetype. Even in the Old Testament, images of God are described that were made at His command.

  1. Take not the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

According to the third commandment, it is forbidden to mention the name of the Lord without special need. You can mention the name of the Lord in prayer and spiritual conversations, in requests for help. It is impossible to mention the Lord in idle conversations, especially in blasphemous ones. We all know that the Word has great power in the Bible. With the Word, God created the world.

  1. Six days you work and do all your work, and the seventh is a day of rest, which you dedicate to the Lord your God.

God created the world in six days, so a person must work for six days, and the seventh day is set for rest and rest. This is a day that every believer should dedicate to contemplation and prayer.

In the Old Testament, the day of rest was Saturday, in Orthodoxy this day is Sunday. On Sunday, Christians do not work, they go to church to pray. It is also good to dedicate Sunday to help those who need it.

  1. Honor your father and mother, may you be blessed on earth and long-lived.

The fifth commandment says that every child should honor their parents at any age. It was they who, together with God, gave you life and took care of you. Honoring parents means showing patience and obedience, helping and caring for them. Even if your parents didn't take good care of you, it's your duty to take care of them more than you think they deserve.

If a person does not honor his parents, he eventually ceases to honor God. Honoring elders makes families stronger and people happier.

  1. Don't kill.

God gives life to man and only He has the right to take it away. Whoever encroaches on the life of another encroaches on both the will of God and His plan. The same commandment says that you cannot take your own life. Killing life in ourselves, we also violate this commandment, for our life does not belong to us, but only to God. Suicide is perhaps the most terrible sin in which a person cannot repent.

The fifth commandment forbids abortions, because from the moment of conception the child carries the spark of God, and therefore abortion is equated with murder.

People exposed bad habits who shorten their lives also sin against the sixth commandment.

  1. Don't commit adultery.

The seventh commandment forbids any illegal relationship. Legal relationship, according to the Bible, is relationship by marriage and only between members of opposite sexes who are not relatives.

Adultery is considered a sin and destroys a person physically and spiritually. The most terrible diseases are spread by human adultery. First of all, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for the sin of adultery.

God does not forbid love, He is Love Himself, but He requires chastity.

  1. Don't steal.

Disrespectful attitude towards another person can be expressed in the theft of property. Any benefit is illegal if it is associated with any damage, including material damage, to another person.

The violation of the eighth commandment is considered:

  • appropriation of someone else's property,
  • robbery or theft
  • fraud, bribery, bribery
  • all sorts of scams, fraud and fraud.
  1. Don't bear false witness.

The ninth commandment tells us not to lie to ourselves or to others. This commandment prohibits any lies, gossip and gossip.

  1. Don't wish for anything else.

The tenth commandment tells us that envy and jealousy are sinful. Desire itself is but a seed of sin that will not germinate in bright soul. The tenth commandment is aimed at preventing the violation of the eighth commandment. Having suppressed the desire to possess someone else's, a person will never steal.

The tenth commandment is different from the previous nine, it is New Testament in nature. This commandment is not aimed at prohibiting sin, but at preventing the thought of sin. The first 9 commandments talk about the problem as such, while the tenth about the root (cause) of this problem.

7 deadly sins.

The seven deadly sins is an Orthodox term denoting the main vices that are terrible in themselves and can lead to the emergence of other vices and violation of the commandments given by the Lord. In Catholicism, the 7 deadly sins are called major sins or root sins.

Sometimes laziness is called the seventh sin, this is typical for Orthodoxy. Modern authors write about eight sins, including both laziness and despondency. The doctrine of the seven deadly sins was formed quite early (in the II - III centuries) among ascetic monks. The Divine Comedy of Dante describes the seven circles of purgatory, which correspond to the seven deadly sins.

The theory of mortal sins developed in the Middle Ages and received coverage in the writings of Thomas Aquinas. He saw in the seven sins the cause of all other vices. In Russian Orthodoxy, the idea began to spread in the 18th century.

I have heard more than once about the seven commandments of Christ from different people. However, no one could list them for me.

That's famous theologian Alexander Vladimirovich Oleshko about them

mentions, but does not give decoding either.

Yet some were able to name two of them: do not kill, do not steal.

This helped me in my search through all four canonical gospels. Three evangelists tell about the answer of Jesus Christ to the young man's question: Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life? ».

And I found that five of them are from

Ten Commandments of the Mosaic Law:
Do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother“(Luke 18:20).
In addition, Mark also mentions the commandment “ don't cheat” (Mark 10:19, taken from Leviticus 19:13), and Matthew is about the commandment “ love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 19:19, taken from Leviticus 19:18).

In total - the seven commandments of Christ:

1) dont kill,
2) do not commit adultery,
3) don't steal,
4) do not bear false witness,
5) don't cheat,
6) honor father and mother,
7) love your neighbor as yourself.

Law of God is a guiding star for every Christian. This is the only way to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The modern world is very difficult for any person. Therefore, everyone should see the need for the 10 commandments of God and the 7 deadly sins. This applies not only to adults, but also to children. Therefore, many people turn to such authoritative guidance. The 10 commandments of God in Russian appeared relatively long ago.

Interpretation of the 10 Biblical Commandments

God created rules and laws. People should have an understanding of evil and good, of their own intentions and actions. Children cannot understand the commandments in an adult way, which means that they need to be explained in a simple way. Therefore, the commandments of God are presented here with understandable interpretations for children.

God is one

The Bible says, "I am the Lord thy God, and there are no other gods but Me." There is only one Creator, and there is no one else besides Him, and therefore one must believe with all one's soul and heart. This is tantamount to believing your parents - mom and dad. The creator who created the world does not forget about people and takes care of everyone. God must always be remembered and honored, and it is necessary to address him only through prayers.

Do not make yourself an idol

God said so that people do not create any image for themselves, do not serve and worship him. If any idol appears, many forget about the commandments and about God himself. A bad child is one who is able to exchange his father and mother for a computer or dolls.

An example is Kai, who became addicted to evil, therefore, he lost love and goodness, because he chose as an idol snow queen. The fairy-tale character had different toys, but he did not have happiness. Only after the arrival of Gerda in the ice castle, Kai's heart was filled with goodness and love, after which he came to life again. For Christians, God becomes above everything, and the next lower step is occupied by close people. Idols can be not only things, but also people, for example, celebrities. Therefore, you should not get carried away by popular people who will not do anything good for the soul.

Don't take the Lord's name in vain

The Lord's name should be treated with reverence and not pronounced unnecessarily. It is necessary to speak the name of God only with great reverence and attention. Every appeal to the Lord is done through prayer. One priest once said that it is like a telephone conversation: at one end of the tube they are talking, and at the other they are listening. Therefore, a Christian person should not cry out to God without reason. The Lord's name is kept in the heart with all frugality and in vain it is not worth letting it out from there. If during a conversation it was accidentally pronounced: “Lord”, then immediately in addition it is pronounced: “Glory to you” or “Have mercy on me”.

Six day work week

6 days you can do all things and work, but on the 7th day you can’t do this - this is God's day and is dedicated only to him. The seventh day is Sunday. IN common days one must fulfill all the commandments and pray, but on Sunday, household chores stop and attention is devoted to the Heavenly Father. To fulfill the fourth commandment, you should go to church and take communion, as well as participate in worship.

Honor your parents

Christ said that the one who honors his parents will be blessed on earth. Children are obliged to help their parents, to obey them. When children are small, parents raise them and help them until they become adults. Adult children should not forget about the elderly mother and father.

Reverence is not limited to politeness, it is necessary to provide specific assistance. Parents will be already at the end of their lives, so adult children should provide all possible assistance, both materially and spiritually. Support means a lot, so you should obey your elders, respect mentors and teachers. To be worthy, you need to treat people well.

Don't kill

deprivation human life another person - this is really the most terrible event. God gave life priceless gift. No one has the right to take away such a gift from a person. If we take various wars as an example, then killing aggressors is also considered a sin, but to a small extent. This sin is justified, but refusing to come to the defense is truly a betrayal, and such a decision is ranked among the terrible sins. You always need to protect loved ones from invaders.

Adults and teenagers must understand that it is possible to commit murder without a weapon in hand. It is enough to take a sneaky step with the help of a word or deed. Although the one who plotted the terrible intention did not participate in direct contact, but he is the killer who started such an intention. It is unacceptable to mock the smaller brothers: domestic animals, birds, beasts and insects - all those who have life. God created man to take care of them.

Don't commit adultery

Love cannot be crossed. It is also forbidden to betray. This law of fidelity is about those who are loved by a person and love him. To preserve the family, it is important to keep the commandment of faithfulness. It is forbidden for a husband to look at other women - this is adultery. Even thoughts about others grow into lust, which in turn is a sin.

Faithful to each other, the husband and wife will remain together forever and live a long and happy life. Any factor of betrayal is treason. It is hard to live with such a feeling of guilt, besides, a person will bring a terrible sin onto his soul.

Do not steal

The next bad thing is stealing, which means to take someone else's things without return. Most people are inclined to believe that if any item was found on the street, then the act is not considered theft.

For example, a person was walking down the road from work and found an expensive phone. There are two options: take it with you, no matter how much it costs, or find the owner of the device. In the second case, the deed will become noble. You can't steal or take someone else's. In this way, God tests the faithfulness of a person, so you should not be tempted and take sin on your soul.

Don't bear false witness

Sometimes people deliberately use lies to hide the truth and overcome some unpleasant situations in life. They think it will help them. It is important to understand: no matter what the deception is, it will always be revealed, even later, but this cannot be avoided. It is a sin if one person invents evil against another. Many engage in slander to defame innocent people.

Don't want anything from someone else

Envy knows no bounds, it destroys joy. Therefore, you cannot be jealous. Usually this happens due to the fact that someone lives better than the other. There is a saying: "The miser pays twice." There are moments in life where a greedy and envious person cunningly buys some product, but after a while, albeit a long time, that person will also be outwitted. You can’t do this, you need to rejoice at positive situations when something good happens to friends or relatives. For such an event, one must thank God, and not grind one's teeth and envy. In Christianity, they do not envy "white envy", they can only rejoice. Such a virtue is much better than envy and greed.

Seven deadly sins

In this regard, there is a widespread opinion that "seven terrible sins" is an equal number of committed actions. This is wrong. The list of small sinful acts can be very long, for example:

  • sports fanaticism;
  • workaholism;
  • insane passion for games.

It's just that the number 7 consists of main groups and has many subgroups of bad deeds. Saint Gregory the Great was the first to propose the idea of such a classification. It happened in 590. But in the church there was a slightly different classification, and there were eight sins.

Deadly sins in Orthodoxy, a list of the main addictions:

  1. pride. A slight contempt for a person breeds pride. If a proud person feels contempt for others because they are low in origin, poor and ignorant, then he independently attributes himself to the wisest people. After all, he is rich, strong, noble and prudent. He resists, mocks the preferences of others. But he can be healed if he turns to God. After all, it was said that the Lord gives grace to the humble, but opposes the proud;
  2. envy. The well-being of a neighbor always upsets an envious person. Therefore, the human soul becomes evil. The vice of an envious person manifests itself in this way: to see a happy man unhappy, a rich man poor, a healthy man poor. The happiness of the envious appears when the happy life of another person is overtaken by disaster. Such a vice that has penetrated the heart forms a launching pad for all other sins, not counting the many upcoming small and big dirty tricks. As a result, a terrible sin can happen - murder, due to the fact that someone lives better and has his own good business. Perhaps the envious person is not capable of committing a crime, but this will always make him feel bad. Vice will begin to intensify and devour the soul. A man will drive himself to the grave in vain, but also afterlife won't save. There he will continue to suffer;
  3. gluttony. There are three kinds of gluttony: eating at different times is the first kind; the second is oversaturation, and the third is the use of exclusively tasty dishes. A true Christian must be careful: meals are taken at a strictly defined time, one must not oversaturate, one must thank God, even for the most meager food. In gluttony, the stomach is in its own slavery. This is not only excessive gluttony at the dinner table, but also insane culinary choosiness with a preference for gourmet dishes. If you look at it from a cultural point of view, then there is a huge gulf between a gourmet and rampant gluttony. Nevertheless, they are doomed to food slavery. For such a category, food is not the usual source of energy, but becomes the main goal in life;
  4. fornication. A person is not omnipotent and succumbs to various temptations, but one cannot stop fighting and repenting of sins. Only in this way is the path to holiness paved. At every step in the modern metropolis there is a mass of various images. These perversions are shown on TV, and the Internet is full of all sorts of bad things. Often a young person covers his good desires with poisonous images and is unable to think about anything else. He begins to take possession of the demon of passion. Passing next to women, a young man perceives them as females. The intoxicated brain is filled with lustful thoughts, and the heart yearns for the satisfaction of dirty thoughts. Such debauchery is not inherent even in animals, but a person is able to sink even to such a level. Fornication is considered not only extramarital sex life and betrayal, but also such thoughts;
  5. anger. In a fit of anger, a person entails great danger. He swears at himself, yells at others, comes into a feverish state of anger. Such a person is like a demon. But for the human soul, anger is considered a natural property. The Lord God specially put such a quality into a person, but in order to resist and be angry at sin, and not at people. Over time, righteous anger perverted and began to be directed at his neighbor. Little things cause fights, swearing, screaming and murder. This is a harmful sin;
  6. greed. Many say that only the wealthy who seek to increase their wealth can be greedy. But such a sin applies to everyone: both the rich and the poor. Passion consists in painful attempts to possess things and increase material wealth;
  7. laziness. It is expressed by extreme pessimism and general bodily and spiritual relaxation. A strong-willed person purposefully goes to the goal with jealousy in his heart, which moves him forward. And despondency manifests itself in an unattainable goal. A person sets himself a too difficult task, therefore, jealousy does not move the will, which in turn results in laziness. A person is upset that he cannot achieve what he wants, and gives up, discouraged for days on end. This happens when a person departs from the Creator and directs all his thoughts to earthly affairs, and not to heavenly ones.

The law of God for every Christian is a guiding star that shows a person how to get into the Kingdom of Heaven. For many centuries the significance of this Law has not diminished. On the contrary, human life is increasingly complicated by conflicting opinions, which means that the need for authoritative and clear guidance of the Commandments of God increases. That is why so many people turn to them today. And today, the commandments and the seven major deadly sins act as regulators of our lives. The list of the latter is as follows: despondency, gluttony, lust, anger, envy, greed, pride. These, of course, are the main, most serious sins. The 10 commandments of God and the 7 deadly sins are the basis of Christianity. It is not necessary to read mountains of spiritual literature - it is enough to avoid what leads to the spiritual death of a person. However, this is not as easy as it seems at first glance. It is not easy to completely eliminate all seven deadly sins from your life. And keeping the ten commandments is also not an easy task. But we must at least strive for spiritual purity. God is known to be merciful.

Commandments and laws of nature

The foundations of Orthodoxy are the commandments of God. One can compare them with the laws of nature, because the Creator is the source of both. They complement each other: the former give the human soul a moral basis, while the latter regulate the soulless nature. The difference lies in the fact that matter obeys physical laws, while a person is free to obey moral laws or ignore them. Great God's mercy is to give each of us freedom of choice. Thanks to it, we improve spiritually and can even become like the Lord. Nevertheless, moral freedom has another side - it imposes on each of us responsibility for our actions.

The seven deadly sins and the 10 commandments are the foundation on which all human life should be built. If we deliberately violate God's commandments, we degenerate spiritually and physically. Failure to comply with them leads to suffering, slavery and, as a result, to disaster. We invite you to get acquainted with the commandments of God in detail. They underlie both modern and ancient legal systems.

How did the commandments come about?

The most significant event of the Old Testament is their receipt from God. education itself Jewish people associated with the 10 commandments. Before they were received, a tribe of hardened and disenfranchised Semitic slaves lived in Egypt. After the appearance of the Sinai legislation, in fact, a people arose, called to serve God. Subsequently, the apostles, great prophets, saints of the first times of Christianity came from it. Jesus Christ was born from him according to the flesh. Having accepted the commandments, the people promised to keep them. This would be the conclusion of the Covenant (that is, the union) between the Jews and God. It consisted in the fact that the Lord promised the people his protection and mercy, and the Jews had to live righteously.

First three commandments

The first 3 commandments are devoted to the attitude towards the Lord. According to the first of them, a person should not have other gods than the true one. The second warns us against creating an idol, from worshiping false deities. The third commandment calls not to pronounce the name of the Lord in vain.

We will not dwell on the meaning of the first three commandments. They are connected with the attitude towards God and, in general, are understandable. Let's take a closer look at the other 7 commandments of God.

Fourth Commandment

According to her, it is necessary to remember the Sabbath day in order to keep it holy. Six days a person should work and do all things, and the seventh day should be dedicated to God. How is this commandment to be understood? Let's figure it out.

The Lord God commands necessary things and to work six days is understandable. It is not clear what should be done on the seventh day, is it? It must be dedicated to holy works and the service of the Lord. The things pleasing to Him include the following: prayer at home and in the temple of God, concern for the salvation of the soul, enlightenment of the heart and mind with religious knowledge, helping the poor, religious conversations, visiting prisoners in prison and the sick, comforting the mourners, as well as other works of mercy.

The Sabbath was celebrated in the Old Testament as a commemoration of how God created the world. It says that on the seventh day after the creation of the world, “God rested from his works” (Gen. 2:3). The Jewish scribes, after the Babylonian captivity, began to explain this commandment too rigorously and formally, forbidding any deeds at all on that day, even good ones. The Gospels show that even the Savior was accused by the scribes of “breaking the Sabbath,” since Jesus healed people on that day. However, it is “man for the Sabbath”, and not vice versa. In other words, the rest established on this day should benefit spiritual and physical forces, and not deprive us of the opportunity to do good deeds and not enslave a person. Weekly removal from everyday activities provides an opportunity to collect your thoughts, think about the meaning of earthly existence and your work. Labor is necessary, but the salvation of the soul is the most important thing.

The fourth commandment is violated not only by those who work on Sunday, but also by those who are lazy on weekdays and evade their duties. Even if you do not work on Sunday, but do not dedicate this day to God, but spend it in entertainment and amusements, indulging in excess and revelry, you also do not fulfill the Covenant of God.

Fifth Commandment

We continue to describe the 7 commandments of God. According to the fifth, one should honor the father and mother in order to live happily ever after on earth. How is this to be understood? Honoring parents means loving them, respecting their authority, not daring to offend them with deeds or words under any circumstances, obey them, take care of them if they need something, help parents in their labors, pray to God for them, as in life. and after the death of parents. Not respecting them is a big sin. Those who slandered their mother or father were punished with death in the Old Testament.

As the Son of God, Jesus Christ respected his earthly parents. He obeyed them, and helped Joseph with the carpentry. Jesus reproached the Pharisees for refusing to support their parents under the pretext of dedicating their property to God. In doing so, they violated the fifth commandment.

How to treat strangers? Religion teaches us that it is necessary to show respect to everyone, in accordance with his position and age. One should respect the fathers and spiritual shepherds; civil chiefs who care about the well-being, justice and peaceful life of the country; teachers, educators, benefactors and elders. Young people who do not respect the elderly and elders sin, considering their concepts obsolete, and themselves - backward people.

sixth commandment

It says, "Thou shalt not kill." The Lord God by this commandment forbids taking life from oneself or from other people. Life is the greatest gift, only God can set its limits for each person.

Suicide is a very serious sin, because, besides murder, it also contains others: lack of faith, despair, grumbling against God, as well as rebellion against His Providence. It is also terrible that a person who has violently cut off his own life does not have the opportunity to repent of committed sin because repentance after death is invalid. A person is guilty of murder even when he does not personally kill, but contributes to this or allows others to do so. In addition to physical murder, there is also a spiritual one, which is no less terrible. It is committed by the one who seduces his neighbor to a vicious life or to unbelief.

seventh commandment

Let's talk about the seventh commandment of the law of God. “Do not commit adultery,” she says. God commands to keep mutual fidelity to wife and husband, to be chaste unmarried - pure in words, deeds, desires and thoughts. In order not to sin against this commandment, one should avoid everything that arouses impure feelings in a person, for example: “spicy” jokes, foul language, shameless dances and songs, reading immoral magazines, viewing seductive photographs and films. The seventh commandment of the law of God indicates that sinful thoughts should be stopped at their very appearance. We must not let them take over our will and feelings. Homosexuality is considered a grave sin against this commandment. It was for him that Sodom and Gomorrah, the famous cities of antiquity, were exterminated.

eighth commandment

God's 7 commandments deal with various aspects of human life. The eighth is devoted to the attitude towards the property of other people. It says: "Do not steal." In other words, the appropriation of property belonging to others is prohibited. There are various types of theft: robbery, theft, sacrilege, bribery, covetousness (when, taking advantage of the misfortune of others, they take a lot of money from them), parasitism, etc. If a person withholds the salary of an employee, weighs and measures when selling, conceals what he has found, evades paying a debt then he commits theft. In contrast to the greedy pursuit of wealth, faith teaches us to be merciful, industrious, and unselfish.

ninth commandment

It says that one cannot bear false witness against one's neighbor. The Lord God thus forbids all lies, including: slander, denunciations, false testimony in court, slander, slander, gossip. Slander is a diabolical thing, since the very name “devil” means “slanderer” in translation. A Christian is unworthy of any lie. It is not consistent with respect and love for others. We should refrain from idle talk, watch what we say. The word is the greatest gift of God. We become like the Creator when we speak. And the word of God immediately becomes deed. Therefore, this gift must be used only for the glory of God and for a good purpose.

tenth commandment

We have not yet described all of God's 7 commandments. It should stop at the last, tenth. It says that it is necessary to refrain from impure desires and envy of one's neighbor. While the other precepts were devoted primarily to behavior, the last one focuses on our desires, feelings and thoughts, that is, what happens inside a person. It is necessary to strive for spiritual purity. It should be remembered that a bad thought is what all sin begins with. If a person stops at it, a sinful desire appears, which pushes him to commit the corresponding act. Therefore, in order to fight various temptations, it is necessary to nip them in the bud, that is, in thoughts.

For the soul, envy is poison. If a person is subject to it, then he will always be dissatisfied, he will always lack something, even if he is very rich. In order not to succumb to this feeling, one should thank God for the fact that he is merciful to us, sinful and unworthy. For our crimes, we could be exterminated, but the Lord not only tolerates, but also sends His mercy to people. The goal of every person's life is to acquire pure heart. It is in him that the Lord rests.

Beatitudes

The above commandments of God and the gospel commandments of beatitude have great importance for every Christian. The latter are part of the commandments of Jesus, which he spoke during the Sermon on the Mount. They are included in the gospel. They received such a name because following them leads to eternal bliss in eternal life. If the 10 commandments forbid what is sinful, then the beatitudes say how you can achieve holiness (Christian perfection).

The Seven Commandments for Noah's Descendants

Not only in Christianity there are commandments. In Judaism, for example, there are 7 laws of the descendants of Noah. They are considered the essential minimum that the Torah lays down on all mankind. Through Adam and Noah, according to the Talmud, God gave us the following 7 commandments of God (Orthodoxy, in general, says about the same): the prohibition of idolatry, murder, blasphemy, theft, adultery, as well as the prohibition to eat flesh that was cut off from a living animal, and the need to create a fair judicial system.

Conclusion

Jesus Christ, when asked by a young man about what should be done in order to inherit eternal life, answered: “Keep the commandments!”. After that, he listed them. The Ten Commandments above provide us with the basic moral guidance we need to build life, both public, family and private. Jesus, speaking of them, noted that they all come down in essence to the doctrine of love for neighbors and God.

In order for these commandments to benefit us, we should make them our own, that is, allow them to guide our actions, worldview. These commandments must be rooted in our subconscious or, figuratively speaking, must be written on the tablets of our heart by God.

For every Christian, the guiding star is the law of God. It is he who points the way to the Kingdom of Heaven. In today's world, the life of any person is very complex, which indicates the need for clear and authoritative guidance from God's commandments. It is for this reason that most people turn to them.

But in practice it is not easy at all. Completely excluded from Everyday life seven mortal sins and keep the ten commandments is very difficult and almost impossible. But it is necessary to strive for this, and God, in turn, is very merciful.

The 10 commandments of God in Russian say what you need:

  • believe in one Lord God;
  • do not create idols for yourself;
  • do not pronounce the name of the Lord God in vain;
  • always remember the day off;
  • honor and respect parents;
  • don't kill;
  • do not commit adultery;
  • do not steal;
  • do not lie;
  • don't envy.

The list of God's commandments allows you to live correctly, in harmony and understanding with the Almighty.

  • The first three of the ten commandments refer directly to the relationship to God. A Christian should worship the true God, and there should not be others in his life. They also say that a person should not have idols and objects of worship, and the name of the Almighty is pronounced only in situations of a complex nature.
  • According to the fourth commandment, a Christian must honor and be sure to remember the Sabbath day. For six days, people work tirelessly and do all their business, which makes it possible to dedicate the seventh day to the Almighty.

This commandment is violated not only by those who work on Sunday, but also by people who are lazy and avoid their daily duties throughout the week. The covenant of the Lord God is also violated by those who have fun and amuse themselves on the day off, indulging in revelry and excesses.

  • The fifth commandment says that you need to honor your mother and father, regardless of age and situation. This will allow you to live not only happily, but also for a long time. The concept of respect for parents includes love, care, respect and support, as well as constant prayer to the Almighty for their health and well-being. Those Christians who slander their parents are punished with death.
  • The next commandment says that it is impossible to take life not only from oneself, but also from other people, regardless of the current situation and resentment. A very serious sin is suicide, which is caused by despair, lack of faith or grumbling against the Almighty. A person is guilty even if he did not take the life of his neighbor, and did not stop the murder.
  • One of the 10 commandments of the law of God says that you can not commit adultery. The Lord God commands throughout life to be faithful to a husband or wife, and also to be absolutely pure in thoughts, desires and spoken words.

Observing this commandment, it is strongly recommended to avoid foul language, shameless songs and dances, viewing photos and films of a seductive genre, as well as reading immoral magazines. Based on this, we can conclude that sinful thoughts must be suppressed in the bud.

  • In the next commandment of the Lord, to say that false witness in relation to a loved one is unacceptable. In His commandment, He forbids any lie, denunciation or slander, as well as false judicial testimony, gossip and slander.
  • The last three commandments say that it is unacceptable to steal, lie and envy. God says that it is necessary to rejoice in everything that you have, and not in your neighbor. Only in this case can one receive the blessing of the Almighty.

In addition to the 10 Orthodox God's commandments, there are seven deadly sins:

  • pride;
  • envy;
  • angry state;
  • laziness;
  • greedy attitude towards neighbor;
  • gluttony and gluttony;
  • fornication, lust and voluptuousness.

God's commandments and mortal sins

The most vicious of the seven deadly sins is pride, which the Lord God cannot forgive.

The commandments of God in Orthodoxy allow us to live correctly and harmoniously. It is undoubtedly very difficult to observe them in everyday life, but you should always strive for the best. Many people who managed to start living according to the laws of God, after a short period of time, simply stopped noticing changes in their daily existence. And, of course, the Lord God helped them in this.

The commandments listed above are sure to benefit you only if you make them your own. In other words, let them completely control your worldview and actions. They must be your subconscious, which will avoid their possible violation.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that people who live according to the law of God are always lucky, and their life develops in the best possible way. They also manage to create strong families and raise a good generation. Live with the Lord, and he will surely bless you for good luck and luck not only in life situations, but also in all, even the most hopeless, undertakings.
